PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The first Presbyterian Church was organized in America in the early 1700’s in Philadelphia. Just preceding the Civil War, the church broke into two separate denominations, which reunited in 1983. Our denomination’s official name is the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A). This is the “mainline” Presbyterian denomination a body of 2.6 million believers in 11,000 congregations. Presbyterian denominations in the United States have split and parts have reunited several times. Currently the largest Presbyterian denomination is the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which has its national offices in Louisville, Ky. It was formed in 1983 as a result of reunion between the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. The word “Presbyterian” is a Greek …show more content…
The prayer of thanksgiving, intercession/ the Lord’s Prayer is always said after the apostle’s creed, and it’s a prayer thanking God and praying as they enter a new week, after the prayer, the tithe is being given. A tithe is 10% of your income, and it should be given to God wholeheartedly, even the bible said it in Malachi 3:10 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, said the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it”, Giving a tithe is a way that you can honor God and reach out to meet the needs of others. After the tithe is the announcements, whatever the church has to say, they will announce it to the whole congregation, even things that will be done during the week, then after the announcement, it’s the offering, when giving offering in a Presbyterian church, the choir and will sing a song and the instrumentalist will play, while doing that, the congregation stands up and dances to the front of the church and drop their offering in a box in front of the church and after that, the minister in – charge will then bless and pray for the offering and then …show more content…
When we reaffirm our faith in the lord, we often use the Apostles' Creed or the Nicene Creed. Unlike other churches who gives out the Holy Communion without confirming and baptizing the person, the Presbyterian Church makes sure the person has been baptized and confirmed in the lord, before they will be given the Holy Communion, also the person has to learn how to recite the apostle creed very well in order to be confirmed to. The term Communion is derived from the practice of early Christians. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth: The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?" (1 Corinthians 10:16). Communion is understood as a common participation in a divine Christian life that a person lives in Christ, because it is initiated by Christ and before they take the Communion, the recites the Apostle’s Creed and then take the Communion. Communion in Presbyterian Church is always taken every first Sunday of every month. The Apostles' Creeds in a response to whether or not Jesus Christ could be both divine and human. The c Apostles' Creed reinforces the historical life of Jesus the Christ, stating the fact that he was "born of the virgin Mary," that he suffered "under Pontius Pilate and that he "was crucified, dead, and buried." St Paul of Tarsus is a model for all Christians as he made Christianity accessible to the whole world, and set it on its path to becoming a global religion by writing much of the Christian Theology that still forms the foundations of Christian beliefs, teachings and community that exists today. Paul established the Eucharist as the principle ritual for Christians, and discussed the appropriate manner by which this ritual is to be celebrated. “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 11:26-27) The belief and teachings of the Eucharist allowed and continues to allow adherents to be brought closer to God by enabling them to give thanks, and be brought closer to ...
With the price of War having been exacted in human suffering, the Presbyterians, with the backing of the Government, were intent that peace should prevail under Presbyterian values. However, although around seventy classes of Presbyterian churches had been initially formed, by the 1650’s only a few remained active. This essay looks to explain what factors contributed to this demise. There are two salient arguments advocated by scholars for this.
The service began with a time of invocation through prayer, responsive reading and song that evoked the presence of God. An oil fueled candle and tray that contained the communion bread and grape juice were then placed at the center of a table. The invocation brought attention to the reality that we who were in attendance were not merely gathered as individuals. We were part of a community, the larger body of Christians from which we came. Remarks were made that emphasized the significance of the event and the paradox in sharing the...
Attending a non-denominational church we start out with worship and being free to sing and dance and let our spirits take over. This may come out as someone running around the pews, or on their knees, but while in the Catholic Church the environment was much different. It was a lot more structured and formal in a sense than that of the non-denominational church where I practice my faith. Another difference was the offering, or as the Catholic Church calls it, the Gift. I am use to this concept, but rather than taking Gifts at the beginning of the service they take it at the end; then came communion. This is where you take part in eating the bread and drinking the wine in symbolism of Jesus’ body and blood. This I was also familiar with, but was informed by the couple that I went with that they partake in com...
First off Catholics believe that they are receiving the very Body and Blood of Christ Himself. At the Last Supper Jesus said, "This is my body which is given for you" and offering His disciples the cup of wine said, "Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins." In the Gospel of John they read: "Jesus said to them, 'Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day, for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink (St. Louis Parish para 1).” When receiving communion and the person ahead of you is receiving Communion you offer a simple bow of reverence with your head and then step forward. You receive Holy Communion either in your hands or directly on the tongue. If you receive in the hands you should take care that they are clean (as a sign of reverence) and place one hand over the other and raise them up high, forming a throne with our hands to receive Jesus. As the priest places the host in our hands and says "The Body of Christ" you should respond loudly and clearly "Amen (St. Louis Parish para 5)." Also, one major point in Catholic Communion is with non-Catholics. Non-Catholics are not permitted to receive Holy Communion. The very action of receiving Communion says that the church believes it is the Body and Blood of Christ and that we share in the whole life of the Catholic Church. Inviting non-Catholics to Communion can be an obstacle to one day reaching full communion by blurring the differences in belief among Christian denominations.
In the mass prayers are said, we pray for the sick in our community and for those sickly in the world. We ask Jesus to heal them, just like he healed people in the gospel. Hymns are sung, readings from the bible are read and communion is taken. Some Christians don’t have Holy Communion services, an example of this are the Salvation Army, they believe that it is possible to live a holy life and receive the grace of God without the use of physical sacraments. To them the inward experience is the most important thing.
Some characteristics may be presbyterians identify themselves from other denominations and religions by teaching, governmental organization and worship; they use what is called the "Book of Order" as another source of religion. Their origins trace back to Calvinism. Many of the different branches are remains of past splits from larger groups. Some of the splits have been due to controversy based on doctrine, while some have been caused by not agreeing with the confession of faith, which historically serves as an important document giving standards of their religion. Presbyterian history is almost the same as Christianity, but the beginning of Presbyterianism is a movement that occurred during the 16th-century Protestant Reformation. As the Catholic Church resisted the reformers, the Church split and different movements became different denominations. The Presbyterian church traces its ancestry ba...
The Roman Catholic Church, the largest denomination of Christians worldwide, has a glorious history as the church of Jesus Christ and the sole Christian Church in the West during the high and late Middle Ages (1054-1550 AD). Explore the history of the Roman Catholic Church before the Reformation in this brief guide, the second in a series of articles about the Roman Catholic Church's history. Early Christianity Splits and Forms Roman Catholic Church In the crumbling Roman Empire, the Christian Church struggled to maintain unity between East and West. When the Eastern half of the Roman Empire fell (circa 400 AD), the pope became the spiritual and political leader for Western Europe.
...express their beliefs as well as listen to the words of the Lord. As Jesus said at his last meal with his disciples before his execution, “Do this in memory of me”. This quote is reflected in the mass in the stage of ‘being fed’ when an adherent receives both the body and blood of Christ, called Transubstantiation. In this way, Christian adherents are able to unit in a diverse environment following the ways that our Lord has taught us. Therefore through this, Christian adherents are able to express their faith.
My first observation was when attended church services and I observed the pastor did not use any props. The pastor was speaking on the power of prayer. The presentation was very informative and useful. I observe a couple of verbal and non-verbal communication during the presentation; he maintained great eye contact with the audience and had great body language.
The central Eucharistic prayer, the Anaphora, which is Greek for “offering”, typically contains a prayer of thanksgiving for the creation of the world and its redemption in Christ; an account of the institution of the Last Supper; the oblation, or Anamnesis—the offering of the bread and wine in thankful remembrance of Christ; the Epiclesis, or invocation of the Holy Spirit on the bread and wine and on the congregation; and prayers of intercession.Bibliography
People all over the world attend many different rituals, whether it be a public speech or a religious service. As a new intern at the Foundation for Racial, Ethnic and Cultural Harmony, I was required to collect information in order to have a better understanding for different ritual practices in the United States. A ritual tells us important information regarding the people who attend the ritual and what they believe in. The Anthropology textbook claims “rituals are formal—stylized, repetitive, and stereotyped” (Kottak 402). Even though I’ve never attended Catholic Church, I attended Mass at The Catholic Church of Saint Monica in Duluth, GA on Sunday, April 3rd at 10:30 a.m.
They then change into the actual body and blood of Christ. Roman Catholics and Orthodox churches share a common significance in the meaning and way of celebrating the Holy Eucharist. “The Orthodox Church uses leavened bread for, according to the Gospel of Saint John, Last Supper and Passion, took place during the evening, night and day time of Passover Day, therefore leavened bread was eaten in Last Supper”("Eucharist"). Before the reception of the Holy Communion and taking in the bread and wine, everyone participating recites a prayer to show a personal act of commitment to Christ. “The eucharistic liturgy is celebrated in the Church every Sunday, the Day of the Lord, as well as on feast days”(“The Orthodox Faith”). While the acceptance of bread and wine is celebrated once a
Jesus served as example for all of humanity. His life work was to solve the fundamental problem of humanities sin and to provide eternal life with the Father. Jesus Christ demonstrated the way humans should live. He modeled behavior to the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, women, tax collector, to His friends. He came to set the example of the way to live for Christians. Basically, Jesus life was an outline of how to live your own life. Jesus confirmed that you should love your neighbor as yourself. That you should love your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your strength. This was demonstrated on a daily bases. Jesus verified that although humans are prone to sin, one can make a choice to not sin. When tempted by Satan, Jesus refrained from sin and turned to God the Father for strength to turn away from the temptation. Jesus was the teacher of complete, true knowledge.
