Prenatal Case Study Pam Jenkins is a 36 year-old woman that is 30 weeks into her third pregnancy. Since her pregnancy began, Pam has gained 20 pounds. Although Pam has reduced the amount that she smokes, she continues to smoke 5 cigarettes per day, which may cause some issues with her worry of another preterm birth. Another factor that could also cause complications is her delayed prenatal vitamin use. After logging her dietary intake within a 24 hour period into SuperTracker, I will be making recommendations on how she can alter her diet and lifestyle to ensure that Pam receives the nutrients she needs for herself and for her baby. As stated on the ChooseMyPlate website, “doctors suggest women gain weight at the following rate: 1 to 4 pounds total during the first 3 months (first trimester) and 2 to 4 pounds per month during the 4th to 9th months (second and third trimesters)” (USDA, n.d.). By calculating her weight gain in accordance with the guidelines, Pam is gaining the maximum amount of weight for a woman that is 30 weeks into her pregnancy. Portion control is psychologically proven to lessen or limit an individual’s intake of any food. According to Dr. Katherine Appleton (2014), any given amount of food over the recommended serving size will be finished by an individual because it is considered normal to finish a plate for a meal. If the amount of food were to be changed, the amount of intake would change as well. This psychology study is based off of an individual’s perception on what is considered “a normal serving size” (Appleton, 2014).
