Compared to modern warfare, premodern warfare was more linear and limited. The soldiers usually faced off on to fronts until one side decides to cut retreat, and the range of fighting was limited by the small army size, the need for food, and inefficient means of transportation and communication. There were not efficient technological advances that allowed the armies to fight from a long range, live off the land, travel a long distance, or communicate effectively to allow the army to break into divisions. The soldiers had poor motivation to stay and fight, so one of the underlying issues for premodern armies was to keep the soldiers from running away. Modern armies can live off the land and go farther distances. Weapons progressed to have longer ranges and deadlier effects, such as artillery and guns with rifling and breech loading. Modern wars have more effective means of communication and transportation. The invention of the telegraph in the early 1800s would make communication effectively instant. Railroads would allow armies and supplies to travel a greater distance in a shorter amount of time. The leadership in modern armies was appointed based on meritocracy. The army leaders were professional because they were trained and had experienced. A system of monarchy was not conducive to a modern army, so the monarch would have to be overthrown and a new system invoked to lead to modern warfare. Because the people are not as oppressed as they were under a tyrannical king, the soldiers had a higher motivation and sense of patriotism to fight. Because modern armies are better trained, better equipped, and able to communicate and move more effectively, they could use more modern strategies to fight the enemy: move in corps, surround them, trick them, outmaneuver them, etc. Modern warfare was not limited to fighting the opposition in a straight-forward, head-on

Tactics during the early stages of the war led to the massacre of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and a huge loss in moral by the Allies. Originally the Allies employed Napoleonic Era tactics that relied heavily on infantry lining up shoulder to shoulder and advancing across open fields. The French further claimed that if they attacked with superior moral they could overcome any foe. Due to the widespread utilization of machine guns and long-range rifles, these tactics resulted in enormous casualties. The French and British, as well, continued to funnel soldiers into failed offensives, even if the battle resulted in little or no gain, which further led to a decline in moral. With thousands of soldiers’ dead, the armies could not continue to fight with these tactics or the armies would cease to exist or soldiers would refuse to continue to fight.

The Revolutionary War introduced for the first time in American history, the idea of naval warfare. Ships were armed with dozens guns and carried several dozens of men. The musket, armed with its bayonet as well as the cannon proved to be worthy weaponry advancements in the infantry together with various pistols. The Civil War introduced the revolving pistol as well as the Gatling gun which enabled soldiers to produce rapid fire and destroy enemies in large quantities with a single round. In the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, continuing through Madison’s term, the United States initiated a policy to retaliate against the seizure of ships by the British and French. These three dominant nations entered a period between 1806-1810, known as Commercial Warfare. The Commercial War was a response by Americans to maintain their right of neutral commerce. The Acts by the United States, the Decrees by the powerful Napoleon I, and the Parliamentary orders, throughout the period of Commercial Warfare directly led to the start of the War of 1812, and helped build the commercial future of the United States.
The Civil War had many large technological advancements that would greatly evolve warfare. The war introduced the first ironclad ships, the first repeating rifles and carbines, and the first metallic rifle and pistol cartridges. The military didn't solely rely on this new technology, however. Older weapons and other tools were still trusted, such as paper cartridges and smoothbore muskets.

The Art of War is a treatise written in Ancient China that discusses the most and least effective military strategies for successful warfare according to Sun Tzu, a military general whose existence is still debated to this day. Industrial Revolution, which took place over much of the nineteenth century, had many advantages. It provided people with tools for a better life; people were no longer dependent on the land for all of their goods. The Industrial Revolution made it possible for people to control nature more than they ever had before. However, now people were dependent on the new machines of the Industrial Age (1). The Revolution brought with it radical changes in the textile and engine worlds; it was a time of reason and innovations.
