The birth of a child is supposed to be the most joyous time in of a person’s life. However, not all are as lucky as some and have the misfortune of giving birth prematurely, and losing their new baby. In 2014, “the premature birth rate in the United States was about 9.6%.” (www.cdc.gov). According to World Health Organization “Almost 1 million children die each year due to complications of preterm birth.” Most expectant parents and families are not educated on the risks and difficulties of premature birth, therefore they cannot take the necessary precautions to ensure they have a healthy full term delivery.

Another short term complication is heart problems. “ The earlier the baby is born the greater the risk of bleeding in the brain”. “ Premature babies can lose body heat rapidly; they don’t have the stored body fat of a full-term infant and they can’t generate enough heat to counteract what’s lost through the surface of their body”. “ Preemies are at risk of blood problems such as anemia and infant jaundice”. “ Premature babies often have problems with their metabolism”. “ An underdeveloped immune system, common in premature babies can lead to infection”. Another long term complication is impared cognitive skills. Vision skills may be another long term complication. “ Premature babies are at increased risk of being some degree hearing problems”. Babies who are born premature are more likely to have behavioral or physcologocal problems”. “ Premature babies are more likely to have chronic health issues”. Placental abruption and low-lying placenta are conditions connected to the placenta that may cause premature birth. In placental abruption, some or all of the placenta seperates from the wall of the womb before the baby is born. Pre-eclampsia is a very serious condition.
