The skinheads who performed this random act of racial violence in 1990,
had no reason to brutally beat their victim other than the fact that he was
Mexican (Ridgeway 167). Racism is objectively defined as any practice of ethnic
discrimination or segregation. Fortunately, racial violence is steadily
declining as the turn of the century approaches. Now a new form of racism,
covert racism, has recently sprung from the pressures of political correctness.
This new form of racism, although slowly declining, still shows signs of strong
support (Piazza 86). Covert racism assumes a form of civil disobedience against
politically correct thought and speech. Essentially, covert racism is a "hidden"
racism, or a racism not easily detected (Piazza 78). "Racism is still strongly
prevalent in today's society" (Gudorf 3).
The three different basic forms of racism, open racism, violent racism,
and covert racism all express forms of hatred towards distinct ethnic groups
(Bender 47). These basic forms of racism, although different in form, all have
the same main purpose, to promote racism. Open racism expresses freedom of
racial thought and speech. Open racists promote their views through strictly
persuasionary tactics. This form of racism is allowed in our society because of
the First Amendment. Open racism is currently almost nonexistent and steadily
declining, because it is considered politically incorrect and socially
unacceptable. Violent racism promotes racism through violence, fear, and
persuasionary tactics (Leone 49) This form of racism is not protected by the
First Amendment because it promotes violence to express its ideas.
Unfortunately many violent racial groups claim they do not promote violence, and
therefore these groups are protected by the First Amendment because not enough
sufficient evidence exists to prove their violent intent (Ridgeway 123).
Covert racism expresses ideas of racism in disguised forms; sometimes
the covert racist is not even aware of the fact that he is racist. "Racism, it
is asserted, is no longer blatant: people nowadays are reluctant to express
openly their dislike of and contempt for minorities, indeed are not prepared to
express publicly a sentiment that could be interpretted as racist. Racism, it
is said, is subtle: it is disguised, kept out of sight" (Enrlich 73) "The

Desire is seen as one of the main sources of suffering in Buddhism because it can create an attachment to certain things in life, whether they be people or inanimate objects, and this sets one up for more suffering. The bodhisattva’s father epitomizes desire in the Buddhacarita. He wishes for his son to eventually be the ruler of the earth rather than simply a religious leader. This base desire sets him up for suffering since upon his son’s rejection of the regal way of life he is disappointed in a way that would not be possible if he did not have desire in the first place. The king’s desires, and selfish ones at that, end up not going as planned since the bodhisattva eventually sees suffering and is determined to fix suffering in the world leading to his father trying to sorrowfully persuade the bodhisattva to stay while “shedding copious amounts of tears” (B. 5.40). This event clearly depicts how desire is able to directly lead to suffering; however, the king was not learned in the ways of Buddhism so he would have easily been manipulated by desires of the world, but desire is even able to corrupt those that are more learned in the teachings of Buddhism, even though it was an early form. Even the gods were upset when the Buddha neared the end of his life because they did not want to see him die.
Spanking, a fictitious form of child abuse, is an appropriate action toward unruly children. It is a popular practice used to instill discipline and values in children, and is more effective than talking to or yelling at the child or placing the child in “time out” sessions. In the long run, spanking causes no damage to the child’s mental or physical health. Instead, it creates a basis for good behavior.
First of all, spanking does not lead to violence. Our surrounding world and media do. "The average sixteen-year- old has watched 18,000 murders during his formative years, including a daily bombardment of stabbings, shootings, hangings, decapitations, and general dismemberment" (Meier 34). It seems unjust to blame parents who are trying to raise their children properly for today's violence. If a child touches a hot stove he does not become a more violent person because of it, he just learns not to do it again because he learned a valuable lesson from the pain (Meier 34).
Ethics is defined as values relating to human conduct with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions. It represents the core value system and the moral precepts held, or rules of conduct followed by individuals, institutions, or societies while making choices in the course of everyday problem solving. What do most people believe to be true about the topic? Spanking is the only resource that is most effective. Yet, there are several other types of punishments that can be used in place of spanking. In my opinion, spanking is not the most effective means of punishment. We tell kids growing up that “violence is never the answer” so why should violence, because technically speaking that is what spanking is, be the answer? Why not try to get a child to understand that their actions were wrong in a more non-violent way and not contradict ourselves. (Guidance for Effective Discipline, online) Using spanking as a method can turn into a quick fix whenever the child misbehaves, rather than using other rational techniques for each scenario. Finally, positive reinforcement and other discipline techniques are more difficult to implement when spanking has been used as a primary method of discipline. Some people believe spanking a child is child abuse, and that it causes the child to grow up aggressive and violent. This would mean that every child that is spanked during their developmental stages will grow up to be an example of bad behavior. However, there is no actual data or information that can confirm that spanking a child will cause a child to grow up to be violent or too aggressive. Children have been trained to obey rules or a set code of behavior for centuries.
