However, because they let their feelings and religion overpower them they do more harm to the deviants than the deviants do to them even though they claim the deviants to be harmful and violent. I chose to analyze this quote because it shows how in the Land of Fringes people do not believe that the crosses on their dress helps them unlike the people in Waknuk. And it marks Petra and Rosalind as people who are against deviants because those crosses are suppose to protect them from deviants as the land of Fringes is the place where deviants from other towns are sent. Secondly, this quote is significant because Petra and Rosalind realize that their society has tried to brainwash them thinking a cross, representing God can protect themselves against deviants. However, their society classifies them as deviants making the cross useless and another way of indoctrinating people. it shows why the Fringes resent this cross as they were sent away for being deviants even though the cross is suppose to protect them against becoming a deviant. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a novel by Harper Lee, that teaches many themes, one of which being very important is courage. Many people think that courage is a man with a gun in his hand, but Lee’s definition is much different. She thinks that courage is when you know that you’re beaten before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. The first quote I have to further explain this is early in the story when Atticus tells Jem and Scout about the court case he is handling. “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 101). Atticus knows he won’t win the court case, but he still tries his best and doesn’t falter whatsoever. Many people scrutinize him for defending a negro, but he ignores them like he should, and shows maturity and courage.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, racism has a negative outcome on most characters. Tom Robinson the man that was accused of raping a white woman, Helen Robinson Tom Robinson wife, and Jem atticus son were all affected negatively by racism.
