Throughout my teaching, in practicum, I noticed many areas that I am strong, but also areas where I really need to improve on. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to have had the time in practicum, not only did it help me get a new view on teaching, but it helped me reflect upon myself in every situation of the day.
During that time I was able to find areas that I would consider my strengths. One area I would say I have a great strength would be classroom management. My classroom was very talkative compared to other classes I have taught. Managing them was very difficult at first because I didn’t know what to expect or even how to hand the students. It was also difficult because I wasn’t sure who was supposed to be disciplining and taking control. Once the cooperating teacher and I had this figured out, it was easy for me to take charge and lay down what I expected. I noticed at this time, the students respected me more as a teacher and not just another student.

I believe that my biggest weakness is moving my thoughts to my mouth in a way that my students will be able to understand them. This is something that I have struggled with all my life. Whether it’s through speaking or writing it out. I struggle to get my thoughts out so others can understand where I am coming from and what I’m thinking. I’ve decided that in order to excel in teaching this is crucial for me to overcome. What I’ve planned to do is make it my top goal for student teaching.
During student teaching, it may take me longer to make lesson plans for the week or day, but I’m determined to achieve this goal. One thing that I am going to do is sit down, plan, and review and go through my lesson in my head. Thinking to myself, what do I want to say, what do I want the students to accomplish? While reading the book Mindset by Carol S. Dweck I learned much about my personal learning style, the realization about how I work with others, and how much an attitude or preconceived idea can influence how I live my life. This also directly impacts my thoughts as an aspiring teacher. All of which have made me come to the realization that as a teacher I will need to be aware of not only my mindset but also be aware of how students can be influenced by their mindsets.

As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
Another strength that I have is being an active listener. I listened to my clients and utilized a lot of micro skills. Insuring confidentiality was also a strength that I developed closer to the end of field placement. Conducting assessments and making sure I tracked and exhausted the topics was also a strength that I identified throughout field. My two strengths are giving students positive feedback and demonstrating a positive attitude. I am an optimistic individual, and I like to show and demonstrate to students a positive attitude. On the other hand, my two weaknesses are: assertiveness towards students and not finding my role in the classroom. From time to time, I find it difficult to find my role in the classroom because I want the students to respect me, but not perceive me as their main teacher. Last week, I had a student try to sit too close to me, and I could not find the proper way and words to address to the student to quit the behavior, without hurting the student’s feelings. As the time approached, my attitude toward student-teaching was one of confidence and in some ways overconfidence. I believed that I was equipped with all of the tools necessary to be a superior teacher. Little did I know what truly goes on behind the scenes of a teacher. Between grading papers, attending meetings, and preparing lessons, I would often feel overwhelmed. Still, student teaching would prove to be much more valuable than I anticipated. It would teach me to appreciate the wisdom of mentors and experienced teachers, value or being organized and prepared, and lastly the resilience of students.
This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
As I was pondering what to speak about tonight, I started thinking about what has been the main influence in my school experience. I realized that what has shaped me most has been my teachers. What is a teacher? After 13 years of school, believe me, I have an extremely good idea of what a teacher is. Two teachers began to teach me, my father and my mother. One of my greatest strengths at work that I have recognized would have to be my ability to be a well-organized individual. I tend to write what I have to do down on paper and prioritize what is more important to least important. In doing this, it helps me organize and accomplish my work and meet deadlines that are important. A personal strength that I have at home is patience. I am a mother of a beautiful three year old little girl who is a handful. Patience is my greatest strength as a parent and individual which I possess especially being a single mother. I am a dedicated and hard working mother and I always make sure that my daughter gets the love and attention she needs.
From the knowledge I have gained from my teaching experiences and graduate level coursework, I have developed a personal philosophy regarding what teaching means to me. Over time, I have also developed a goal for what I would like to take away from any extended education I receive in the field of teaching.
As a future educator, I have many goals. My first goal would be to never overpower my students. Being a teacher should not be a job, it should be a passion. I will focus my classroom around the student’s needs, rather than my own. The classroom will revolve around the students. I will be their guiding hand through education. My parents arrived in the United States hoping for a better future not for themselves, but for the baby they carried in their arms. We would often move from relatives ' houses since my parents couldn’t afford renting an apartment themselves. We were fortunate enough to have caring relatives who didn 't mind us living with them since they knew the hardships we were going through. I grew up in a household where only Spanish was spoken given that both my parents didn’t speak any English at all. When I was in kindergarten, my teacher was afraid that I would be behind the rest of my classmates, given that I only spoke Spanish fluently. I was fortunate to receive free tutoring from my kindergarten teacher. We would often read books together until
