Reflection of Practicum Experience The city of Evanston Health and Human Services Department is one of the four certified municipal health departments in Illinois. Established in 1874, the health department serves as the local face of a global networking of professionals who strive to ensure the public's health. During my practicum experience the health department was in the process of completing a five-year strategic plan aimed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the public health systems within the city. The department utilized the nationally-recognized model, mobilizing for Actions through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) to assist the community in prioritizing public health issues, as well as identifying …show more content…

Based on the core values of integrity, professionalism, caring, teamwork, and stewardship, I will be able to develop and implement health related policies and programs that are available to the entire population, regardless of cultural beliefs, racial or ethnic background, socioeconomic resources, or individual literacy. My vision of my role in public health is to be an advocate and voice for alienated populations. My core values will help guide my ethical decision making in public health, by making decisions that are based on my spiritual belief that God created man in his image and I am my brother’s keeper, for I am responsible and accountable for how I treat, treat my
The two logic models utilized were Precede-Proceed model and MAPP (Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships). The qualitative data methods used for the data collection were- researching the national, state, and local databases; reviewing the previously conducted county health assessments and reports; interviewing key stakeholders in the
The knowledge that I will obtain in the public health portion of the program will allow me to be better prepared to understand the social and environmental determinants of health that contribute to the development of diseases, and this will allow me to care for my patients more effectively. As these and other public health issues become more prominent, having a well-trained workforce that is equipped to address community-level health concerns is vital. As a profession, PAs are well educated as primary care clinicians and are able to handle a wide variety of common health care disorders. Adding a master’s degree in public health equips PAs with an expanded skill set which can be used to manage the health of entire communities, specifically those which are
The program united my interest in healthcare and public health coupled with cultivating leadership and management skills. I have gained a broad exposure to the core public health disciplines, a macro-level understanding of the health care system, and honed my professional skills in direct application towards healthcare delivery. Ultimately, I aspire to practice at an urban hospital, and to have a leadership role where I can leverage my experiences and perspective to influence hospital initiatives to help underserved
State and local public health departments throughout the country have the responsibility for improving health in workplaces, schools, and communities through identifying top health problems within society and developing a plan to improve. Barriers the public health system has encountered over the years include: changes in the overall health system that support cost containment and improved health, and an increase in the number of individuals with insurance coverage for direct preventive services; reduction of qualified public health professional and funding at all levels of government; increasing focus on accountability, with higher expectations for demonstrating a return on investment in terms of cost and health improvement (Trust, 2013). In the near future, health departments ...
...ntralizing and taking a holistic approach towards health for underserved communities, could lead to improved show rates, as well as, knowledge and communication between patient and health care providers. Especially in under marginalized communities, where advocacy and resources are lacking and needed the most, the manner in which health officials effectively educate and provide the resources to these communities need to be strategically assessed to translate scientific research into practice. With the value and importance of public health increasing, I desire to address the social determinants of health to reduce health disparities through utilization of technology and partnerships with community organizers. Thus, I believe a degree from Oregon State will be an excellent opportunity for me to merge my skills, backgrounds, and passions, turning a vision into reality.
The term “public/community health” often brings to mind sparkling clear clean water and fresh clean air. The reason for that mental image is that both are required in order for one to have good public/community health. In actuality, the term “Public Health” has been defined as “the protection and improvement of the health of the public through community action, primarily by governmental agencies” (Public Health, 2016). However, public health includes any and all actions taken to maintain and improve the general health of a community. Government health programs provide most of the public health services. In addition, many voluntary health agencies receive contributions to battle specific diseases, such as HIV and cancer. These agencies not only provide medical services, they campaign for health legislation, and make important contributions to health education. In the United States, the Public Health Service administers the government’s public health programs. State and local health departments also provide a wide range of

I have chosen Public Health as my career path because I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. Also, I chose healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness. Moreover, Public Health is a challenging, diverse and dynamic field. My philosophy of health is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities and the population. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public
The improvement of health, enforcing policies, and monitoring comes from interrelationships between governmental and non-governmental entities. Since the 21st century the apparent need for an improved public health infrastructure has been a recurring topic on the state, local, and national level. In 2010 the Affordable Care Act authorized numerous clinical health reforms, a big step towards providers being accountable. {ACOs} Accountable care organizations are conducting health assessments and reporting metrics to payers. According to Magnuson and Fu, Jr., “Public health agencies must, in turn, evolve from being the only entities capable of assessing and monitoring population health to strategic and enabling partners involved in population health practice” (2014). A sense of involvement and shared work load is needed to help shift the challenges public health officials face. Public health officials promote and protect the community. With the involvement of other organizations more polices can be enforced and created to improve population
Many master's degrees in public health are designed with practicums. These course requirements are made to help students acquire the skills that they will need in their future job position. Each student will often have a different practicum that is designed to meet their career goals. Throughout the process, the student will be expected to demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to apply evidence-based principles. While a practicum takes a significant amount of time and effort, it offers the student a number of useful benefits.

Once root causes are recognized, improvement is possible. It is
Public Health is the most important aspect of medicine. My studies in Public Health will go a very long way to help me grasp the proper concepts and tools needed to work with the government to bring sustainable solutions to health care problems faced by various communities today. Public Health issues touch almost every family in the USA today. I know that if the health sector was better funded, better equipped, and better managed, with clear and effective policies, this kind of suffering could been avoided. I want to go into public health because I believe strongly that I can contribute not only to my fellow Americans, but also to people all over the world. I anticipate that through proper planning, interventions and implementation of effective policies, one will be able to bring about much-needed change through my work with an NGO or non-profit affiliated with the UN.
Physicians and veterinarians are able to help individuals with problems and diseases. But with public health, one would be enabled to help both humans and animals on a large scale, even at global level. Today, I firmly believe Public Health is one of the most crucial aspects of Medicine. It, indeed, can help prevent and bring solutions to health issues like no other field. Furthermore Veterinary Public Health is the most right choice for me. With the knowledge I gain in the Veterinary Public Health specialization (VPH) as an option within the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program, I would be able to fulfil my dreams of striving for a healthy society. My passion, academic background, work experience, and cultural competency will contribute to the student body and graduate Veterinary Public Health

Through this program, I am looking forward to immerse in understanding policy and program designs, the complexities and
