Washington State University College of Nursing has provided me with a vast range of opportunities. One of the most significant learning objectives that I met was applying management/leadership principles to my nursing practice. My clinical and practicum experiences have helped me master my management and leadership skills. For my community health clinical, I had the opportunity to develop a health fair. One of my classmates and I planned, organized, and ran a health fair for the homeless population in Yakima. This project required that I communicate with different organizations to ensure that we had a location for the health fair, as well as gather donations to hand out to our participants. These learning goals are essential to my future nursing career to ensure that I provide the best care to each patient. One of the most important learning goals that apply to my future in nursing is that I adapted excellent critical and creative thinking skills. Throughout my nursing school experience, I have been forced to use good critical and creative thinking skills. By applying knowledge learned from lecture classes and using critical and creative thinking skills, I have assisted patients presenting with unique symptoms. During my practicum experience, I worked with an infant that was being therapeutically cooled, due to being diagnosed with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy. When my preceptor and I started the warming process, this individual’s oxygen saturations started to drop into the 80s. I helped reposition the infant, due to the baby becoming relaxed, and therefore, occluding his airway. This was a simple task, but because my preceptor and I worked together, thought critically and creatively; we managed to increase the baby’s oxygen saturations back into the

Ever since I was a little girl, my motivation to pursue a career in the medical field was evident. While other children my age watched Cartoon Network, I found more value in shows like ‘Trauma: Life in the ER’ and ‘A Baby Story.’ It wasn’t until high school that I decided I would become a nurse, specifically. I cannot say that I had a revelation or a particular experience that swayed my decision. However, ever since I began pursuing the career of nursing, I discover each and every subsequent day that it is what I was put on this earth to do.

The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. However, paraprofessionals are often not treated as equals and has created some ethical judgement regarding treatment of the paraprofessionals from other teachers and administrators in the business of education. As an advanced practice student I have found that nursing theories provide the framework on which to base healthcare practices. For example, Benner’s Novice to Expert model attempted to define the basis and growth of nursing knowledge. Having advanced nursing knowledge and being able to apply it into appropriate healthcare settings is key when caring for various patient populations (Christensen, 2011). A walk through demonstration and rationale discussion completed the WinMed experience. Learning about emergency lighting, testing of emergency lighting, fire extinguishers use/deployment/charge monitoring, sprinkler systems with backflow prevention valve, smoke detector yearly cleaning, cleaning of general areas including bathrooms, trash pickup and disposal, biohazard disposal, sharp containers, standard precautions, and biohazard facility pick up opened my eyes wide to a whole new world.

Staying up with current practices and the evolving changes in health care there will always be opportunities to learn and to grown both professionally and personally. It is essential for nurses to maintain their competences within the basics of nurses as well as their specialty. Maintaining flexibility in the approach to teach others such as students, peers, and other clinical staff educators must meet the diverse needs to accommodate everyone. Within the past four years I have be able to accomplish goals that felt impossible to reach. The most fun I have had since I graduated was going to a track day at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA with my car enthusiast friends and cousin. It was a great experience since I had the ability to check all the technicalities of my car before driving it on the track and be part of the General Driver's Meeting in the morning that included some in-classroom time. I drove for a while at the track, but ended up enjoying spectating the more experienced and professional drivers push their cars to the limits. Additionally, I always kept an open mind to experienced track drivers that gave me tips on how to take corners quickly: braking point, turn-in point, apex, and analyze the position and direction of the next corner. After that particular track day, I learned how much brakes and tires wear as well as the importance of checking the essential components of one's car much like checking a patient's physiology before admitting to surgery.
Enjoying such a wide variety of opportunities has not shown me a particular area of nursing but has drawn me to a love of nursing in general as each person has a story and walk in life. My goal is to continue to learn from the opportunities I am presented and learn from those with the experience to help me improve my level of care. Leadership to me is learning to build on past experience and helping others use their unique talents to bring people together for a common purpose. Learning, living, and then leading I want to be someone to bring others together to make a true lasting impact. Growing up I enjoyed doing service projects in my community and through college I have found a love for short term service trips including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Belize, and twice to different areas of Michigan, one of which I was a co-leader in helping to plan. Service trips and service work is something I love and I want to continue to help and build on what I have already accomplished in serving my community. It is my desire to be a lifelong learner to help me serve people and my community to the best of my ability. My junior year in high school in the Health care program consist of class room learning medical terminology, pharmacology and skills of being nurse; however, in my senior year, I had the privilege to attend clinical at local nursing homes, hospitals and veterinary clinics. Clinical in health care program, in high school was an eye opening experience and consist of me shadowing the nurses that I was assigned to. I had the opportunity to see what nurses have to deal with and it does take a special person. My experience in the Health care program and working firsthand with the sick and elderly patients has supported and confirm that I have what it takes to become a nurse. I enjoyed the experience of shadowing nurses so much that I volunteered at the Lowman Home, a nursing home in my community during my spare time while I was in high school. I was assigned to work with elderly patient who had Alzheimer; I would read, play games and interact with the patients; I enjoy see the smile that I put on their faces by taking time with
I have learned more about places like the Montclair Youth Opportunity Center, which is a trendy hub for many young people during the summer or after school during the school year. Additionally, I have continued to learn about the screening tools public health nurses use to identify health risks in the community. So far, I have learned about the nursing child assessment satellite training (NCAST) feeding/teaching scales, comprehensive chromosome screening (CCS) tool, Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST II), and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). Lastly, I had the opportunity to try grant writing, which was a very informative experience. I have already seen so much to Community Health Nursing this semester and look forward to learning about the many more things public health nursing has to offer throughout my nursing
