1. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Child Development and Family Relations at East Carolina University. This December I will complete my graduate studies in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program at North Carolina University. During my undergraduate studies, I had to the opportunity to assist clients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) at the Autism Society of North Carolina as a summer camp instructor and community skills instructor. 2. I would like to express my strong interest for a practicum placement in the upcoming summer semester. For the summer semester, my practicum schedule would consist of 4 days/week or 5 days/week. During the summer semester, I intend to take Cleft and Craniofacial disorders or Feeding Disorders. My strong academic skills will provide me with the theoretical knowledge and research skills to engage in Evidence-Based Practice and keep abreast of current research in education, healthcare, science and best practices My practicum history includes the Hablemos in the bilingual clinic program, the Neurogenic Aphasia Group, and the Healthy Start Academy.
At Hablemos, I gained experience carrying out individual and group lesson targeting fundamental speech and language skills to preschoolers Spanish speaking clients. At the Neurogenic Aphasia Group, I gained clinical experience in the following areas: acquired aphasia, motor speech disorders, and cognitive communication disorders. At my current practicum placement, Healthy Start Academy, I am acquiring clinical experience in screening, evaluating, and treating school-age children with various disorders and needs including language disorders, phonological disorders, articulation disorders, autism spectrum disorder, selective mutism, attention-hyperactive deficit disorders, and oppositional defiant disorder. During these clinical practicum placements, I administered, scored, interpreted, and wrote reports utilizing the following standardized assessments: PLS-5, CELF-5, GFTA-3, and
ROWPVT-4. One of the main reasons that I am interested in the practicum placement at DRH stems from a very successful clinical experience I last fall at in the Neurogenic Aphasia Group at NCCU. During the practicum, I spent a significant amount of time with adults who had aphasia and other neurogenic conditions. Through these experiences, I developed a passion for medical speech-language pathology and a desire to grow in a medical setting. Because I want to work with a diverse group of clients. I had a very successful clinical experience at My current practicum placement schedules include: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:30am-2:30pm.
Research My first research experience took place from the Fall 2012 – Summer 2013 in a neurobiology laboratory (Dr. Daniel Plas) focused on Parkinson’s Disease. In this project an undergrad student and I were tasked with optimizing a cellular medium for neural growth of the model organism Lymnaea stagnalis. This was comprised of following established protocols and altering certain variables within the formulas (differing concentrations of ions, pH, et al.) to observe growth pattern differences in vitro.

But it is different routes you can take and different programs you can enroll in for this profession. Family Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medication and diagnose patients and give treatment. They can work either in hospitals and or clinics as a primary healthcare provider. They can also order specific x-rays and test that need to be done for a patient. The nurse practitioners interact with less patients in a clinic than in a hospital. Np’s have privileges to prescribe medications in every state.
I was attracted to the Norlin Scholars community over any other opportunity at CU because I fit the Norlin Scholars program academically, socially, personally, and in terms of what I want for my future. None of the other programs I researched came as close as Norlin Scholars to matching my ideal vision for my time at CU.

The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. However, paraprofessionals are often not treated as equals and has created some ethical judgement regarding treatment of the paraprofessionals from other teachers and administrators in the business of education. As a Life Skills Mentor through Lane County, I instructed students diagnosed with Autism, implementing interventions prescribed by individual treatment plans. This involved teaching students social skills, focusing on nonverbal cues and maintaining conversations through modeling or role-playing. In addition, I assisted students in developing self-awareness, identifying sensory and emotional needs. Additional targeted objectives included: developing and maintaining relationships, navigating school, basic money management and utilizing public transportation.
I would like to help children with multiple disabilities in a school based environment. To do this, I will build upon and utilize my skills and knowledge of both ABA therapy and Speech Pathology. Ogletree stated (2001), ABA has had a long-lasting influence on the field of speech-language pathology principally because ABA treatments have been clear on the questions asked and answers provided. By collaborating the two, the child will be able to learn how to functionally communicate in an appropriate manner. I would combine the two by testing the student’s behaviors as a form of communication from there I would replace it with a more suitable form of communication. Applying to graduate school is an important process. Students must make sure that they meet all the expectations of the programs to which they are applying. However, the graduate schools must also meet the needs of the students. From what I have learned, the DPT Program at Franklin Pierce University exceeds expectations. Both the DPT program, and the university as a whole, show deep commitment to academic excellence, helping the community, and thoroughly preparing students for careers in their desired field.
IEP stands for Individualized Education Program. An IEP is a written document required for each child who is eligible to receive special education services. It is provided to a student who has been determined first to have a disability, and second, to need special education services because of that disability. An IEP is very important and should never be overlooked by anyone. The purpose of an IEP is to make sure that only students whose educational performance is affected by a disability receive special services. An individual program plan is designed to make sure that students get the kind of educational experience that they deserve; an experience that results in success. Communication is very crucial in life, especially in education. Whether it be delivering a message or receiving information, without the ability to communicate learning can be extremely difficult. Students with speech and language disorders may have “trouble producing speech sounds, using spoken language to communicate, or understanding what other people say” (Turkington, p10, 2003) Each of these problems can create major setbacks in the classroom. Articulation, expression and reception are all essential components for communication. If a student has an issue with articulation, they most likely then have difficulty speaking clearly and at a normal rate (Turkington, 2003). When they produce words, they may omit, substitute, or even distort sounds, hindering their ability to talk. Students who lack in ways of expression have problems explaining what they are thinking and feeling because they do not understand certain parts of language. As with all types of learning disabilities, the severity can range. Two extreme cases of expression disorders are dysphasia and aphasia, in which there is partial to no communication at all (Greene, 435, 2002). Individuals can also have a receptive disorder, in which they do not fully comprehend and understand information that is being given to them. They can experience problems making sense of things. “Children may hear or see a word but not be able to understand its meaning” (National Institutes of Health, 1993, p1).
