Not many sixteen years olds can say they can lift three times their body weight and over five hundred pounds. Many will create a image of a six feet, sixteen year old who weighs over two hundred twenty pounds. However in my case I'm a five-seven, hundred fifty two pound Hawaii powerlifter who started in the seventh grade summer. Powerlifting is a small growing sport of who can lift the heaviest weights based on how much you weigh. I currently am a seven time WABDL world record holder and numerous state and national record holder in Powerlifting. I compete in many Powerlifting competitions and after 3 years, i'm considered one of the more successful powerlifters in Hawaii. However success in powerlifting did not come easy, it took dedication, drive, and a skilled coach. Without these key elements I personally wouldn't have been Powerlifting is a one man's sport, but without guidance from a coach, a potentially great power lifter could never become one. My dad, Matthew Jumalon is my coach for powerlifting and he helps me to correct my form and gives me a exercise routine so I can strengthen specific muscles. Since powerlifting is all about form without a skilled coach like my dad I wouldn’t know the proper form for a deadlift, bench press, and a squat. If I wasn’t taught the correct technique I would be prone to injury since every exercise in powerlifting can hurt you just as much as it can help you. A hurt powerlifter is a non successful powerlifter since in order to get better lifts, a powerlifter has to be healthy. A coach is also key to motivating a power lifter and push the lifter to new limits. My dad pushes me everyday by making me add more weight while doing exercises and by giving me new exercises that strengthen different muscles. Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
The ideal images of female athletes presented in the films for this class have had a strong connection to the images of ideal women in society in general. Like the ideal image of women, there are many variations of the ideal image of female athletes. While Dare to Compete tracked the evolution of the role of the real female athletes, the feature films we watched presented varying views of the ideal female athlete, which has been different in different times and places.
Ever since sports has been introduced into our society it has always been gender specific. Today, sports are still gender specific but not as much as before due to the change in social norms. Many people enjoy playing sports. For some it may be the competition, for others it may be for the love of the game. It has been difficult for individuals who enter non-traditional sports for their gender. Women have especially struggled with this matter until the Title 9 was issued. Before Title 9, many women were not allowed to participate in track and other sports that were not considered feminine. During the Victorian Times, women were only allowed to play sports that didn't make them look sweaty, tired or just messy. They had to stick to the norm of being conservative and looking proper. Can you imagine, they had to even wear skirts for baseball and other sports? How can you be comfortable and play well in that kind of an outfit? When it came to tennis, they had to look graceful like a ballerina. The main concern in playing a sport is enjoying it and playing it well. It never had to do anything with being part of a beauty contest. Women were given limitations into what sports they could participate in. However, realistically women were just as good as their counterpart when it came to playing sports in which they were not allowed to play.
One should always stretch and work on flexibility, but as well as build a stronger core, legs, and back to have a greater outcome when performing deadlifts. Bodybuilders live an active and healthy life style and encourage others to do the same and to gain muscle or “gains” as some of them use to describe gaining muscle. Strength is an abstract concept with various meanings. Some meanings are more complex than others. Many people when they hear the word strength think of muscular men who can lift cars or comic book heroes that fly around their city saving people. More exists to the concept than just being muscular. Strength is also shown when one goes through something tough but stays positive and pushes through it anyways. Having strength can mean possessing the ability to accomplish hard tasks because of muscles, being firm or solidly planted in something, or withstanding your own and not giving up or giving in to the opposing force.
With a growing interest in weight training younger children are beginning to lift weights. Which brings about questions about when children should be allowed to start lifting and what degree of difficulty should they be allowed to attempt. This topic has sparked a debate about whether or not a person under the age of eighteen should be allowed to competitively lift weights in the Olympics. Many believe that the risk of injuring children is not worth the opportunity for them to succeed in the Olympics. The risk is not as enormous as it is made out to be. Anyone who has a fully mature body and is over the age of thirteen should be allowed to participate in Olympic weightlifting. If done correctly lifting weights is a great way to stay active and healthy for a person of any age.
There has recently been increasing scrutiny debating the merits of strength training in our youth and more importantly the unsafe and unethical training practices that tend to be utilized in implementing strength training programs in all levels of amateur athletics. These controversies have enabled many people associated in medical and exercise sciences to take a further look at the field of prepubescent athletics and their impact on the developmental patterns of the children involved. The research in the field has provided feedback regarding the physiological, mental and social effects - negative and/or positive - that strength training influences over prepubescent growth and development.
What is Athletic training, and what could someone do with an athletic training degree? Athletic training is a unique field because it requires a strong mental and physical ability. These trainers go by many different titles such as: physician extender, wellness manager, rehab specialist, etc. Many trainers do not work under anyone, as they have their own office outside of the athletic setting. However, these trainer also work in many other places, such as: universities, hospitals and clinics, professional sports fields, military bases, etc. With a degree in this field, one might want, for example, to work in a hospital or clinic, as stated above. What would he/she be responsible for in this particular setting? A trainer working in a hospital would try to ease the pain of the injury and help move the patient through the process of the treatment.

When I first began to exercise, I was primarily trying to add size on to my body. At the time I only weighed about one hundred sixty pounds and I was six foot one inch. I was also eight teen and feeling that my lack of participating in school sporting events, as well as my abuse of alcohol and less than ideal food choices, had stunted my physical potential. With this new found feeling of inadequacy I set off on a journey that would change my life forever. The first thing I noticed when I began searching for ways to change my body, was that I was obviously going to have to buy weights if I wanted to look like the guys in the gym.
