It is the year 2169 and people have been genetically altered to not age after the age of twenty-five. This however comes at a cost, one year after someone’s twenty-fifth birthday the person dies unless they work to stay alive. This is managed with a bold green digital clock that is embedded in the forearm of every person. After this birthday the clock begins to countdown and if it reaches zero the person “times out” and dies immediately. Moreover, there is no physical currency but money is given out in the sense of time now. Time is transferred by both grasping one’s forearm and turning it slightly or by a machine scanning the arm. Workers’ wages, goods, and services are paid in hours and minutes. This leaves the world split into two different societies or “time zones” where the wealthy live on forever and the poor live day by day.
Will Salas, played by Justin Timberlake, is a twenty-eight year old poor factory worker that lives in the ghetto of Dayton with his mother Rachel. The wealthy live in a place called New Greenwich, which Will boasts to his mother about all the time saying they will live there one day. One night after working Will goes into a bar with his friend Borel and notices a man that seems to be getting a lot of attention. The man is well groomed and dressed wearing a nice suit. After getting a closer glance of the man and his arm Will can see the that he is wealthy in time. To Will it is obvious that the man is not from Dayton and is instead from New Greenwich.
While Will is having a conversation with the man about leaving the bar before someone steals his time, the “minute men” come through the doors. These men are criminals that steal time from other people. Will escapes the minute men with the man and both...

As a whole the film In Time puts in perspective many ideas from Marxist criticism. The plot surrounding around the imbalance between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat is a staple in the Marxist class conflict argument. The way that capitalism is being portrayed in this movie is something that most Marxists would like. Capitalist economies are viewed to always end in failure from a Marxist standpoint and the film does show that. In Time also shows the capitalist economy as the base and how it affects its superstructure by influencing changes in beliefs and culture of its society. The general message that Andrew Niccol’s In Time tells the audience is that we live in a world where the majority of the power is in the hands of the select few.
Time, Forward! Is set during the middle of Stalin’s first five year plan. The entire novel spans a 24 hour period and takes place on a construction site that mixes and pours concrete. The novel centers on a shock crew that specializes in mixing concrete and their attempt to break a world record for most concrete poured in a single day. Through out the story these proletarian worker have to over come many obstacles in order to achieve the impossible. In the end the workers achieve this great feat only to find out that another crew had broken their record the very next day. There are multiple examples of socialist realism that can be found in the book. One of the more prominent examples from the book is when Marguiles initially finds out that the concrete pouring record was broken he immediately starts to formulate a plan to set a new record. Like stated earlier one of the main aspects of socialist realism is it promotes to the party policy and is relatable to the working class. During this time period there was a great emphasis put on being as productive as possible. At times manager would go to drastic measures to accomplish quotas set by the government. Sometimes going as far as putting sawdust in dough to substitute for the lack of flour they needed to bake bread. If the novel were to show factory works cutting corners it would have
There are many people that go overboard with power. Once they get their hands on just a little bit, they start to want more and more. They downgrade others to make them feel unimportant. The firefighters in the story of Fahrenheit 451, went mad with power; the firefighters in the story resemble some people in our day of age. The story Fahrenheit 451, depicted power v. weakness, hypocrisy, and self growth.
Each of the show’s male characters played a different role of what black masculinity looked like. “Will” was cast as a relatable young man humorously trying to find his place in the new world that he has been given. “Will” is an easy-going cool guy, who has his way with the ladies. “Will’s” cousin “Carlton,” played by actor Alfonso Ribeiro, is the privileged, money hungry goody-too-shoes who efforts seem to always f...
This is in total disregard of the normal system of conformity that requires people to follow the set rules and regulations. The world has therefore turned into a Totalitarian community that is run by the “Tick tock Man,” and his clock (Ellison 877). The emergency need for punctuality in the future clearly creates an obsession that jeopardizes the need for freedom in conducting the day to day activities as well as one’s personal space. This in itself is an ironical situation because there is an unexpected switching of roles between man and time. Prior this obsession of time consciousness, man used to control time management but now, time is managing all the important aspects of
Marxism is a method of analysis based around the concepts developed by the two German philosophers Karl Marx and Fredrich Engel, centered around the complexities of social-relations and a class-based society. Together, they collaborated their theories to produce such works as The German Ideology (1846) and The Communist Manifesto (1848), and developed the terms ‘’proletariat’ and ’bourgeois’ to describe the working-class and the wealthy, segmenting the difference between their respective social classes. As a result of the apparent differences, Marxism states that proletariats and bourgeoisie are in constant class struggle, working against each other to amount in a gain for themselves.
Marx views history as being determined by economics, which for him is the source of class differences. History is describe in The Communist Manifesto as a series of conflicts between oppressing classes and oppressed classes. According to this view of history, massive changes occur in a society when new technological capabilities allow a portion of the oppressed class to destroy the power of the oppressing class. Marx briefly traces the development of this through different periods, mentioning some of the various oppressed and oppressing classes, but points out that in earlier societies there were many differentiations of social classes. Marx sees the modern age as being distinguished from earlier periods by the simplifications of the class conflict, splitting up society into two great hostile groups: the bourgeoisie and the proletariat.

Will Hunting is a 20 year old genius with untapped potential. Lacking a post-secondary education, Will spends his time reading borrowed library books. What he reads, he knows. He can quote college textbook pages and understand theoretical math and science principles that men at the top of the math field struggle with. But his knowledge isn’t put to use as he mops the floors of Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a janitor. He takes breaks from cleaning to solve the math problems that Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard) post outside his classroom. Lambeau wants to know who solves his math problems, which are too complex for all his theoretical math students. As Lambeau is leaving his office late at night, he discovers a janitor grafting on his board. Lambeau chases Will off, but soon realizes he has found a genius. Assuming he’s fired, Will heads out with his friends to blow off steam. When they come across Will’s old elementary bully, they decide to beat him up. As Will is wailing punches on his former bully, the cops show up.
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’ The Communist Manifesto explores class struggles and their resulting revolutions. They first present their theory of class struggle by explaining that “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles” (Marx 14), meaning that history is a repeated class struggle that only ends with a revolution. Marx and Engels’ message in The Communist Manifesto is that it is inevitable for class struggles to result in revolutions, ultimately these revolutions will result in society’s transition to communism.
Karl Marx, in the Capital, developed his critique of capitalism by analyzing its characteristics and its development throughout history. The critique contains Marx’s most developed economic analysis and philosophical insight. Although it was written in 1850s, its values still serve an important purpose in the globalized world and maintains extremely relevant in the twenty-first century.
The movie “In Time” takes place in a world where time has become the currency. People use time ultimately to stay alive, to pay for rent, and pay for foods and goods. Once you hit the age of 25, you stop aging but you’re genetically engineered to live only one more year unless you can buy your way out of it. The people who live the longest are the wealthiest people, they can live forever and are essentially immortal. The rest of the people who live in the ghettos live day by day by working very low paying jobs, stealing or begging for time. When the clock on the persons arm hits zero they die. Time on these clocks has become the universal currency; by touching arms, one person can transfer it to another, or to or from a separate clock that can be shipped or safely stored in a "time bank". The country is divided into "time zones" based on the wealth of its population. We have a saying that many people use today “Time is money” but in this movie Time is literally money. “In time” relates to the topic of macroeconomics greatly. This movie brings up many topics in economics such as distribution of wealth, labor force, scarcity and inflation. It shows us how differently people look at the economy when the currency is no longer physical money and how there is a separation in the rich and poor.
The capitalist is motivated by being rewarded wealth. Capital can only multiply by giving itself in return of labor power. This exchange is based on specified percentages. For example, after a long 12 hours of weaving the worker is only compensated two shillings. They attain residual wealth by taking advantage of workers. These workers are being compensated less than the value of their work. The workers endure great deals of exploitation. Workers put their labor power into effect to acquire means of survival which makes existence possible. The amount of commodities is based on the cost of life and the workers’ work ethic. Marx foreseen that class conflict between the bourgeoisie and proletariat would result in the collapsing of capitalism. The motivations of the capitalist and the workers create conflict because the capitalist attempt to uphold capitalism by advocating their principles, beliefs, and fabricated perceptions that prevent proletariats from rebelling. Once the two classes conflict with one another the cla...
He is known worldwide for his numerous theories and ideas in regards to society, economics and politics. His outlook on these subjects is known as Marxism. Marxism focuses on the imbalance and struggle between classes and society. Marx’s theories stem from the concept of materialism based society and the implications thereof. These concepts leads to the Marxist theory of the failure of capitalism. Marx had a number of specific reasons for the downfall of capitalism yet capitalism remains very real and successful. Marxism covers a wide range of topics and theories, but an in depth analysis of his criticism to capitalism and how it is not relevant to modern day will be explored.
