Have you ever had power? Did you feel like you could tell people what to do and
when/how to do it? In the book Of Mice And Men power is a main factor of how they live and
what they have the ability/permission to do what they want. Some characters in the book are
George,Slim and Curley. Some characters have more power than others and you will learn this
next.
First george is the first person to talk about and the power he has over Lennie.
He gives the commands to Lennie and he always listens no matter what he says. You could also
say he has power of Crooks too because nobody trusts Crooks. One

thing to know about george is he is definitely not a boss of anybody other than Lennie.
Second we will talk about the respect and power Slim has. Slim is one of the mostpowerful
people in this book. Everybody listens to him and he is kind of like a boss. Even Curley (Slims
boss) listens to him at some points. Slims co-workers also look up to him and follow him. He is
the person everybody likes and has power at the same time.
The third character with power is Curley. Curley is a character people do not necessarily
like and they only listen to him is because of the power he has. Curlys dad is the boss and he runs
everything. Curley could easily lie to his dad to get anyone he wants fired and he does not like
people very easily. One more way he does not have power over is his wife. Curley's wife is always
running away talking to the other workers and Curley can not seems to handle her and know
where she sneaks off to. Curley has power over almost everyone but his wife.
POWER: The capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the
course of events. In the book Of Mice And Men Power is one of the most important
factors that the character either has or does not have dependent on how they act.
That does not mean power is always good.( The power the characters have also can be bad because then other people rely on them and they have to know what to do for the characters that do not know what to do or how to act.} It may be easier to have no power because then there is less work to do. In conclusion Power affects how to live in this age of The United States Of America and the more power to have may sound good but it also could be looked at as bad to have power because people would look for help. The person with the most power in this book is the boss and the person with the least power is Crooks. Both of these characters do not play a very big part in this book. The last point I would like to make is that Crooks ( Character with least power) and the Boss Curlys dad (Character with most power) are the people that are least liked. Crooks and the boss are the characters that nobody really likes or respects and so that may prove that it is better to be in the middle, not too much power and not too little. Last thing to say is all in all the way to act determines how powerful you are and if people would look up to them. Power is one of the main factors in this book and many things in the book rely on the power.
What is power to a human? As time has gone by, there have been many forms of control and influence in the world. Many strive to achieve total rule over a society or group of individuals. Yet the question still presents itself to the average man. Why does man desire power so greatly even though there is visible trouble that follows? Shelley’s Frankenstein, Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron”, and Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, whether through the situation or the character themselves, depict the evils and hardships due to an imbalance and poor management of power.
In Of Mice & Men, the character Curley’s Wife is depicted as flirtatious, promiscuous, and insensitive. However, her husband Curley sees her as only a possession. Most of the workers at the ranch see her as a tart, whereas Slim, the peaceful and god-like figure out of all the men, see her as lonely. This answer will tell us to which extent, is Curley’s wife a victim, whether towards her flirtatious behaviour, or to everyone’s representation of her.
In the novel I see Curley as a dictator figure because he is a bully
Curley’s belligerence is a character trait that is the reason he does many of the things he does throughout the book. He picked a fight with someone he knows is weak.
Curley's wife, comparable to most other characters in the novel, is a type of character with little discrepancy, moreover being the only woman in novel. Curley’s wife is demonstrated by her position and part. This part is however, being a possession of Curley or a wife. She is heavily insulted and looked upon as inferior: George and Candy call her "jailbait" and "tart", which supports the fact that he has no voice and as a matter of fact, no name – simply being referred to as Curley’s wife. Due to her lack of power, she attempts to gain it by leeching off those with power. This leeching is portrayed as her seducing the other men on the ranch who have large presence like Slim: “Hi Slim” supports a casual and somewhat flirtatious approach to the other men. She seduces other by wearing far too much makeup and dressing like a "whore" with “red fingernails” and red shoes with ostrich feathers.
Curley has two companions: his wife (which doesn’t even like him) and his dad, which is forced to like him because Curley is his son.
First, Curley is an antagonist that complicates George and Lennie’s dream. Curley is the boss’s son, a skillful boxer who hates big guys. That is the reason why he wants to fight with Lennie. Because of the hostility Curley takes out on Lennie, it
According to the oxford dictionary, “Power” is the ability to do something or act in a particular way especially as a faculty or even individually. It is also the political, social authority, or control that is exercised by a government. The theme of power, is portrayed throughout several texts and novels in both Mosaic I and II. In the book, Cat’s cradle by Kurt Vonnegut expresses the idea of power through religion, science and politics. The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marks and Frederick Engles, demonstrates how power, through class and economy leads to political empowerment. Homer’s Iliad and the Epic of Gilgamesh both demonstrate conflicting views of what is means to be powerful. Throughout these two text, both the Gods and mortals, struggle to discover their own power, whether it is through their strengths or an obsession with glory. The theme of power also manifests itself in the book of Antigone, where Creon abuses his privilege of absolute power and this allows him to suffer to a great extent. The Complete Persepolis and Walden and Civil Disobedience also demonstrates how governing powers can oppress people and this can be very restrictive in societies.
In Of Mice and Men, Curley’s wife is depicted as having a complex relationship with power. She is presented with power from her marriage to Curley and the wealth and connections is brings, except because she is a woman, all of this power is taken away from her. She is able to regain some of it back by using her
Power helped some people in this novel by helping them do what was right. Like George, he was the new guy, the guys still accepted him because he seemed like a kind and trustworthy person. So he never really had problems with people except Curley but Curley was just that kind of person because he thought he was better than everyone else and bigger. He also had power though since his dad owned the farm he practically could do whatever he wanted so no one really wanted to mess with them because if he wanted to he could get people canned. His dad had power over everything since he owned the farm he controlled who worked there and who did not and what kind of jobs people would do. Slim had power too because he was kind of like a leader and he was a nice guy. He was also very respectful and knew where his place was and did not run into trouble since no one had a reason to mess with him. Carlson had some power to in this book when he took control and killed Candy’s dog, “I’ll put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with.” (47)
Power is a strong ability that can influence the behavior of people or current events. Those who have power in their everyday life have an advantage over those who don’t. In Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men his message is that characters who have power demonstrate an advantage over other characters.
From the displays of power that have been shown through out this essay, we see that this story is a story about power. Power is the story is primarily about peoples need for some small amount of power to survive in life and to feel that hey have a purpose within their society which every society it may be whether its is Gilead or Nazi Germany or modern day Britain.
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.
Curley and Curley’s wife both represent evil both oppress and abuse the migrant workers. Curley especially harasses Lennie because of Lennie’s strength and how enormous he is. This is a symbol of cat and mouse.
The definition of power can mean many things. The ability to have power can control people in their sayings or actions. Power is a necessary component in any society. Leaders must be established with their power, because, when taken to an extreme, power could not be good. In the novel The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, Ellsworth Toohey and Gail Wynand both spend much of their lives consciously seeking power over others. Toohey and Wynand both share the same desire to hold power over people and get power from people.
