Throughout our lives, we have learned that when strong vs. week, the strong usually wins. Unfortunately, it does not always happen like that for government or elected individuals. Normally, no one would think that oppression leads to communism, but because of real life events involving the US and the government of another country, it is somehow in our minds. This is the point George Orwell uses in his book Animal Farm. He uses characters such as Snowball and Napoleon to illustrate how absolute power corrupts absolutely.
When hurt, people can direct all of their energy into a more positive idea that might not be pleasant to all. The pain of the trauma can be everlasting as well as the hurt. In most cases, people try to take revenge on the ones who hurt them. An example of this would be kids being bullied in school. Once the bullied child is fed up, weapons are introduced in order to help the kid defend themselves. The pain can make it difficult to rebuild relationships even after years of psychology. Once emotionally scarred, there is no bandage that can help you heal. Many “crime victims continue to feel overwhelmed,” (From Pain to Power, 1998) even years after the psychological events. The common definition for revenge is simply to repay others for deceit. The overall lesson is that pain leads to revenge, and revenge leads to more pain.
Old Major believed that animals were born into the world as slaves. He felt that humans have betrayed him. In the story he says, "...and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end, we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty. No animal in England knows the meaning of happiness...old". He believes that when the purpose is fulfilled or they can no longer serve, that are murdered. After...

Squealer was a direct reference to the USSR propaganda. Because of his natural ability to make speeches, the other animals praised his speaking by saying, he was able to "turn black into white". This means that everything he says sounds believable. So there is no questioning what he says. Squealer’s speech also influences thoughts. He starts say in one speech. “Without us, Jones might come back. If he comes back everyone's rations would be smaller"(Ch.9). He clearly plays on the emotions of the animals. He makes them think that if they do not support Napoleon and forgive him, Mr. Jones will come back and treat them 10 times worse.
The oppression in Animal Farm relates to no other, but communist Russia, and unfortunately it is what the United States is turning in too slowly. The book foreshadows what is to come, and that is exactly how it will turn out.
Abraham Lincoln once said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” ("Abraham Lincoln Quote"). Lord Acton also said, “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” (“Lord Acton Quotes”). Both of the quotes show that power is not always a good thing, and can sometimes make good people, do bad things. Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novella about animals rebelling against humans on a farm in England. The novella has been said to be directly related to the Russian Revolution of the early 20th century. Immediately after the animals gained power, the pigs took over as the leaders of the animals. The pigs became corrupt with the power, and may have made conditions worse than they were with humans
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than other.” is one of the most famous quotes from George Orwell’s Animal Farm. From afar, Animal Farm is a fictitious novel with no real substance, but when carefully read, it is a chilling allegory of the horrors of the Russian Revolution. Orwell stresses in the novel, the dangers that go along with a bureaucratic or totalitarian regime. The novel supports the idea that Communism is an unethical and unjust system of government and damages society. While Orwell hides the fact that the novel has information, identical to events pertaining to Russia during the 1940’s, he utilizes it in an innocent way by using simple farm animals to directly compare different events and characters of the revolution.
The theme of propaganda comes up in a part of the story when the pigs say “You have heard then, comrades, ‘that we pigs now sleep in the beds of the farmhouse? The pigs justify sleeping in beds by saying that they removed the sheets so it does not make it a bed. The theme of propaganda rises again when squealer has to justify to the animals that the pigs should keep the apples and milk for themselves because they are the more intelligent ones of the farm and need to stay healthy which the animals then accept. Propaganda is shown again when boxer is taken away to the “knackers” to be turned into glue which the animals are not aware of and think that he has been taken to hospital for treatment. Squealer then goes on to tell them that he was taken to the hospital by the vet for treatment but unfortunately died there. Squealer tells the animals that he was there when he passed and that his last words were “long live animal farm” which was not true and never even happened because he wasn’t taken to hospital, he was taken to the knackers to be turned into glue. When the animals questioned why it said “horse mortuary” on the side of the van squealer told them that the vet had bought the van off the knackers and had not been rebranded
Some reasons why are the following: "He was a brilliant talker, and when he was arguing some difficult point he had a way of skipping from side to side and whisking his tail which was somehow very persuasive. The others said of Squealer that he could turn black into white." Squealer was a manipulator and nearly everything that came out of his mouth was manipulative. Another piece of evidence is when the birds objected to 'four legs good, two legs bad' and Snowball manipulated them and said that a birds wing can be regarded as a hand. The pigs were amazing at manipulating almost like it was breathing. For instance all they ever did was manipulate, like when the pigs took the milk and apples and then lied and said they had to have it for their health and that they don't like apples or milk, but if they don't have it they won't be healthy and Farmer Jones will come back. And that is what we call manipulation but manipulation isn't just shown in Animal Farm, it's shown in everyday life, in society and was really shown throughout the Russian Revolution. Realistically, nothing can be obtained without manipulation, intimidation, lying and deceiving, and Orwell's novel displays
Old Major, the creator of animalism, represents both the original revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin, and the founder of communism, Karl Marx. Like these Russians, Old Major wants all individuals to be equal. Old Major is symbolic of Marx because, like Marx, he has a dream about the revolution. He says, "'That is my message for you, comrades: Rebellion! And among us animals let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeship, in the struggle. All men are enemies. All animals are comrades'" (Orwell 4). Also, neither of the two live to see the revolution put into effect ("Animal" 1). Old Major is also symbolic of Lenin because while he introduces the idea of a revolution, Lenin introduces the New Economy Plan to Russia (Urban 1).
In his book, Orwell uses his allegorical farm to symbolize the communist system. Though the original intention of overthrowing Mr. Jones (who represents the Czars), is not inherently evil in itself, Napoleon’s subsequent adoption of nearly all of Mr. Jones’ principles and harsh mistreatment of the animals proves to the reader that indeed communism is not equality, but just another form of inequality. The pigs and dogs take most of the power for themselves, thinking that they are the best administrators of government. Eventually the power corrupts them, and they turn on their fellow animals, eliminating competitors through propaganda and bloodshed. This is of course a reference to Stalin, who murdered many of his own people in order to maintain his dictatorship of Russia.
Revenge is medicine to most people or it is an ongoing circle. When a person is betrayed or inflicted pain it is a natural reaction to think of a way to cause the same pain back. Revenge is part of everyday life and many find pleasure through it. Although it may be the natural reaction and could be someone’s gut feeling that is telling him or her to do it is almost never right and does not pay off in the end. Revenge is a ongoing circle due to the fact that when someone does something wrong to a person that person will want to do it right back and keep going back and forth until justice intervenes or someone realizes it is morally wrong. Just like the saying “an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind” is the
The statement, “Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely”, simply means that the more power one has – the more control one has over people – then the more corrupt it is possible for that person to become. This statement is certainly correct if the person with the power has certain proclivities towards corruption. There are many examples in the book, “Animal Farm”, by George Orwell, of power corrupting those in charge because they had these tendencies. In the story, the most powerful animals are the two pigs, Napoleon and, to a lesser degree, Snowball. During the course of the story these pigs used their power to get more power, and in the process their inclinations towards corruption triumphed. When Old Major, the boar who came up with the idea of all animals uniting against humans, died, Napoleon and Snowball saw an opportunity where they could take control and took it. Napoleon used force to get rid of Snowball and take all the power for himself, and he used fear to keep the other animals from revolting. He used scapegoats so that he could not be blamed for anything that went wrong, and propaganda to brainwash the animals into loyal slaves. Napoleon changed and broke the commandments of Animal Farm to benefit himself, and he lacked empathy for all those who worked hard for him, executing those that might cause him trouble.
Squealer uses propaganda such as rhetorical questions, lies and threats to convince the animals to believe the pigs. Unfortunately for the animals, they are easily led. If it were not for their blind devotion, trust and naivety, they could easily see how the pigs gradually gained power. The pigs also use the dogs as force to keep the animals ‘in line’, discouraging them from trying to rebel.
The dignity of the poor workers oppressed by capitalism would be restored, and all people would live as equals in communism. This book, Animal Farm by George Orwell is an amusing story of allegory of the early history of the Soviet Union. Orwell wanted to make political writing into an art and to harmonize political concerns with artistry. As he became inspired by the Russian Revolution he wanted to show how some governments would do almost anything it took to succeed the rest. The book itself has acquainted many by providing a basis to describe the problems of communism as it was once tried in Russia during the 20th century. We have a deeply marked example in the history of Soviet Communism, where many were slaughter to only satisfy one person, Stalin. I believe George Orwell created Animal Farm with the goal of showing people that there is not a pure form of communism and to realize the mass amount of time, effort, energy, and lives it took for people (or animals) to realize that communism (animalism) would not succeed. In Animal Farm Orwell verified the moral economic failure of the Russian Communist system.
Revenge is an emotion that corrupts the innermost parts of the soul. It is not an emotion that comes and goes, but is a sentiment that is unwavering and perpetual until successfully carried out. Revenge is the hunger that drives someone to inconceivable measures in order to inflict similar pain or suffering to a person who is the center of previous internal sufferings. Although revenge is focused on the original perpetrator, it affects the revenge seeker as well as the victim. The one who seeks revenge is further hurt by the consequences involved with their revenge. Even though revenge may seem to be rewarding, those seeking revenge inadvertently suffer due to their obsession that causes present separation, their insecurity
Most directly one would say that Animal Farm is an allegory of Stalinism, growing out from the Russian Revolution in 1917. Because it is cast as an animal fable it gives the reader/viewer, some distance from the specific political events. The use of the fable form helps one to examine the certain elements of human nature which can produce a Stalin and enable him to seize power. Orwell, does however, set his fable in familiar events of current history.
In George Orwell’s Animal Farm we get a glimpse of a strange switch in totalitarian rule. From Mr. Jones a cruel farmer who feeds his animals to little and works them to hard, to Napolean a pig that will have you killed for a bottle of liquor. Through stupidity, narrow mindedness and pure cowardice of some animals we view the inevitable as the farm animals become ruled by pigs. Old Major probably not the first animal to think of as an animal to ruin a utopia for the farm, is in most cases not a favored example to contribute to the pigs takeover. This pig finally near the end of his better than average life chose to create a rebellion against the then in power Mr. Jones. A truly justifiable act executed in a time to late, for Major died to soon to lead the farm. If Old Major had summed up an ounce of courage in his closer to piglet years further and earlier then his dying days the animals might have had a chance of a better life. Old Major can be seen as him being a late coward having what is thought on the farm to be a good life trying to end it a false legend or maybe Old Major was a slow hero wanting to leave a better life for his friends. Still though we should agree that for Old Major’s failing action or neglect was the time he chose to start a rebellion, in the few days before he died.
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely is a concept widely understood after having read Orwell’s satire. It is first shown when the pigs take the milk and apples, explaining to the rest of the animals that everyone is equal, but some are just more “equal” than others. They also argue that the pigs do more thinking, and therefore need more energy to do so. It is in the latter part of the book, that the concept of
This book highlights the dangers of trying to establish an equal society under the ideas of communism, and also has poignant symbolic characters that display historical figures in new light. While the two words are not named in Animal Farm, communism and totalitarianism are two things that are explored immensely in this book. Communism is defined by Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language as: “a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state.” In addition, totalitarianism is defined as “absolute control by the state or a governing branch of a highly centralized institution.” Starting their rebellion, the animals were undoubtedly going for the ideal communism, where all the animals were treated equal and had all things in common.
