The aim of this paper is to establish a link between poverty and prostitution in Pakistan. Prostitution is where sexual services are provided for the purpose of attaining economic gain in return. This business is practiced in many cities of Pakistan and poverty is considered to be one of the major reasons as to why this practice still exists today. Severe financial crisis, inability to afford basic necessities and lack of other better options are situations which incline individuals towards prostitution. . Thus, poverty acts as one of the major pushing factors which cause an individual to resort to this profession.

The President of Gender Reproductive Health Forum; Aleem Baig said that ‘Poverty is the major reason people get into prostitution’ (In 2010). .. Several case studies also show that poverty drives prostitution.

For instance, a girl’s husband was a drug addict and she was a victim of domestic violence. She was convicted and sent to prison with him when police found the drugs. Once she was out she was homeless, she had no money to survive and support herself, so she had to join prostitution to overcome the poverty she faced.

In another case, a prostitute and dancer married one of her customers but he left her and she ended up living in circumstances where she faced extreme poverty as there was no one to support her. Children as young as eight years old are also part of this profession. Both young boys and girls are often forced into becoming sex workers.
