Poverty has existed throughout earth’s history; it is only recently where this chronic issue has attempted to be conceptualized. Even though there are great advances in technology and human progression, there are still great measures to be taken to reduce the growing gap of individuals/countries that fall under this failed category. To understand this dilemma, this paper will address the complex issue of what poverty is, who this affects and why this occurs.

Poverty is a multifaceted issue that impacts the globe. When comparing poverty between countries, an important thing to understand is that there is no dependable way to compare poverty globally. The reasons as to this present inequality are tied to the functions of capitalism. Globalization has resulted in large masses of people who are competing for jobs and the result is businesses will hire individuals at low pay rates/ low benefits (Standing 5). Globalization has also resulted in many businesses outsourcing their employees and production to international countries with little to no infrastructure to protect the rights of workers and the rights to resources. Countries that do not have the legislature in place to facilitate fair treatment are the most abused and experience higher economic inequality rates. The theory of Trickle-down Economics does not apply in these countries because what financial assets do go into these countries usually remain at the top of the social ladder (Diaz). All of this is done to benefit these large companies and exploited countries are left with no economic growth and no ability to catch up with the rest of the developing world. Similarly in the U.S. this is seen in the top one percent of society account for almost half of the countries income (Bernstein 2-4). The extent of poverty and economic inequality in the U.S. and across the globe has not been properly handled or remedied. Corruption of government officials and the political weight that large international businesses use has only widened the economic inequality gap. In the U.S., this can be seen in the relationship with the economy and poverty. Individuals in unproductive jobs experience less motivation to excel in their work environment and subsequently, lose enthusiasm to participate in political decisions that affect their lives (Bernstein 4-7).
