Post-colonialist Perceptions of Lewis’ Out of the Silent Planet The Italian artist Michelangelo Buonarroti viewed the goal of sculpting as the manipulation of a marble block until the figure within is set free. Just as a carving artist seeks to release its piece from rock, a literary artist desires his art form to be carved from an obscure idea into clear apprehension. The most beautiful of these art pieces are placed in a museum of their own right, the literary canon. A great part of literature’s beauty is the ability of the artist to present his purpose in indiscrete ways, in some degree or another, sliding his message in the literature’s elements during its construction. In an enjoyable science fiction/fantasy book, C.S. Lewis uses his own techniques to convey his feelings and attitudes as he often had in the past. With Out of the Silent Planet, Lewis reveals his acquiescence to “Post-colonialist” thought in a very hidden way. He presents a story on an alien world, navigating around a reader’s earthly partialities to open their minds to his beliefs. Post-colonialism is a discourse draped in history. In one point in time or another, European colonialism dominated most non-European lands since the end of the Renaissance. Naturally, colonialists depicted the cultures of non-Europeans incorrectly and inferior. Traditionally, the canon has misappropriated and misrepresented these cultures, but also the Western academia has yet to teach us the valuable and basic lessons that allow true representations to develop. Partly in response, Post-colonialism arose. Though this term is a broad one, Post-colonialists generally agree on certain key principles. They understand that colonialism exploits the dominated people or country in one way or another, evoking inequalities. Examples of past inequalities include “genocide, economic exploitation, cultural decimation and political exclusion…” (Loomba 9-10). They abhor traditional colonialism but also believe that every people, through the context of their own cultures, have something to contribute to our understanding of human nature (Loomba 1-20). This is the theme that Lewis prescribes in his, self described, “satirical fantasy”, Out of the Silent Planet (Of Other 77). Sold in bookstores throughout the world and mostly on the “religious” shelves, C.S. Lewis is hardly recognized in the post-colonial field. But of dozens of authors that could express this discourse, there is no better suited than the British professor.
Qantas is the 11th largest airline as of 2014 and ranked 1st in Australia, whose prime function is the quality transportation of passengers and airfreight across domestic and international routes. Qantas has been successful due to its innovative cost controlling of the business in expense minimisation. However as a result of this, the business has undergone capital-labour substitution and the casualisation of the workforce. This developed workers’ concerns of their remuneration, employment conditions and job security which caused the engineers and ground workers disputes in 2011. Qantas has responded to these workplace disputes with the strategies of negotiation, grievance procedures and tribunals within its contractual and legislative grounds.
Overall Qantas effectively utilises the marketing process to ensure for maximised profits to ensure for future financial stability. Enabling Qantas to maintain an effective competitive advantage over competitors maintaining its image as Australia’s number one aviation company.
It is through living a life filled with change and experience that Clive Staples Lewis was able to confidently proclaim, “Is any pleasure on earth as great as a circle of Christian friends by a fire” (Quotable 223)? Without the events that led C.S. Lewis to this mindset, his famed novels would probably be nonexistent. The various aspects of Lewis’s life inspiring his works are especially prominent in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, an installment in his series The Chronicles of Narnia. These occurrences allowed Lewis to learn, mature, and grow as a person. Additionally, Lewis was able to draw from these experiences as vast inspiration for unique ideas and themes. An imaginative and free-thinking childhood, a collaborative friendship
Out of the Silent Planet By: C.S. & C.S. Lewis C. S. Lewis produced a book that conveys vivid scenery, relatable characters, and a vague but detailed plot that gave rise to a novel with wonderful clarity. Out of the Silent Planet is an account of the voyage of Ransom, a linguist, who is kidnapped and taken to another planet, Malacandra (Mars). Where he learns that Thulcandra (Earth) is called the silent planet because there has been no communication from it in years. On the voyage there, he is led to believe he will be sacrificed.
She points out how white tourists think that the establishments and systems left behind from colonization are things that the natives should be thankful for. White tourists think that the natives “are not responsible for what you have; you owe them nothing; in fact, you did them a big favour, and you can provide one hundred examples.” (10) Ironically, while they seem to think that the natives should be thankful for certain remnants of colonization, white tourists refuse to take responsibility for the actions of their ancestors that caused former colonies to be in the state they are in now. In thinking that the “West got rich not from the free …and then undervalued labour” (10), but instead through the “ingenuity of small shopkeepers in Sheffield and Yorkshire and Lancashire, or wherever”, white tourists refuse to acknowledge that it was the oppression of these former colonies that led to the growth of their own race whilst attributing to the decline of these colonies. In believing in their own superiority and refusing to acknowledge this, white tourists continue to willingly take part in a system that oppresses natives of formerly colonized islands because they see no wrong in doing
C.S. Lewis was the 20th century’s most popular proponent of faith based on reason. As a child, he created an imaginary world where personified animals came to life, and later, he wrote the book, Chronicles of Narnia. How did he transform from a boy fascinated with anthropomorphic animals into a man of immense faith? His transformation to the Christian religion happened as his fame began to flourish. People wrote him, asking him about his claims about the truth of Christianity (Belmonte, Kevin). As I attended the drama of Freud’s Last Session, I was engrossed into the plot of the play and was constantly thinking about how it pertained to the objectives of the World Literature class. I not only connected the content of the play to its context, but I also reached out to apply the context to a discussion on a broader scale. I then discovered why the context of literature is imperative for true understanding of the w...

“The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” is a film directed by Mark Herman which revolves around Bruno, an eight year old son of the German commandant at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Germany. He forms a friendship and strong bond with a Jewish boy named Shmuel on the other side of a fence of the camp. This film portrays the horrors and torture the Jewish people have faced during World War II. Friendship plays a major role in the film since Bruno and Shmuel formed true friendship even though they were forbidden to be companions due to their different religions. Friendship is a strong bond formed between two individuals; it is essential and a necessity in life since it is one of the source of happiness and it is necessary for compassion, innocence and facilitation in order for the friendship to blossom.
Edward Snowden became a household name this year. His face and story have featured on an innumerable amount of the worlds most well known and reputable media outlets making this issue difficult to ignore. He appeared in the public eye by leaking classified information about major top secret United States, Israeli and British government mass surveillance programs to the media. This matter is surrounded by vast controversy as he has inspired activists to take a step out of anonymity and voice their opinion publicly causing a number of protests and international debates. Others are less grateful, naming him a traitor and cry for this man to pay for his crimes against the US. This essay shall explore the issues of this debate and ultimately conclude with my opinion hopefully having persuaded the reader.

Cathay has been trailing closely to SIA in terms of first class cabin service and profitability for years. Qantas has long been dominating the highly profitable Kangaroo route and is ranked 5th in the world by Skytrax's survey . Please refer to appendix for the actual figures for every analysis below.
In Out of the Silent Planet, C. S. Lewis writes a quite straightforward narrative. What gives the book its unusual power is its mythic quality, the Martian cultures, the sensitivity of the description, the themes of courage, and the friendship. These all combine to create a cosmic vision that is touching, epic, and fascinating.
that it is used to refer to not only vastly different but even opposed activities" (Ashcroft 2). Post-colonialism encompasses many of the issues encountered in the work we have discussed thus far in the semester. Yet because vague and generalized theories have limits and tend to oversimplify, clouding over real problems, one must handle the term with care.
If enough people join together, the government has little choice but to agree with them. The public can be harsh, but they largely speak their mind. Whistleblowing is no exception—once a whistleblower unleashes a scandal, their fate lies not only in the hands of the law, but in those of the public. Society can be a whistleblower’s saving grace, or their guilty verdict. When surveyed, the majority of people identified Edward Snowden as a whistleblower (versus a traitor). In the same survey, they classified Bradley [Chelsea] Manning as a traitor. They were equally treasonous from the government’s point of view, but the public gave little care to their [the government’s] conclusions. In the 1950s, whistleblowing was a no-go. After the war, big, flourishing corporations cultivated loyalty toward the company. The employees bought into this ideal, believing in the goals and benevolence of the company. Up until the sixties, the idea of big business was so glorified, it was unthought of to condemn the very hands that fed their family and supplied them with unprecedented benefits. As big business and government grew closer in the sixties and seventies, people began to question their comity. Whistleblowing became more acceptable and common. After that, whistleblowing began to be perceived as an important element of society,
Karl Marx’s “The Communist Manifesto” deals with the rise of a new belief system that is caused by the history of class struggles in society. This belief is catalyzed by the fear of the oppressors obtaining full control of the oppressed. The oppressors, which Marx terms as the bourgeois, are exploiting the feudal system for their own selfish gains and the oppressed eventually accept their fate. He argues that this rise in the power gap is a direct result of colonization and industrial production. Comparably, postcolonial theory has noted that as a result of colonization the cultures and traditions of the colonized nations has shifted significantly. These ideas are seen in Karen Russell’s “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” in which
