1. What are some possible reasons for the carelessness of Tom’s colleagues?
Feelings of anger, jealousy, and resentment might account for the carelessness. Some of Tom’s colleagues may believe that they were better suited for the position and are upset that they didn’t get promoted. Other colleagues might be unhappy that Tom is now their manager instead of just one of the gang. Another reason for the carelessness could be their friendship with Tom. They might be taking advantage of that friendship by slack-off, thinking that Tom won’t say anything.

I would also warn him that not everyone on staff will be happy for him, but not to take it personally. I would tell him to be empathic but not to get drawn into a conversation about their hurt feelings. I’d tell him to instead, discuss with them their individual goals as well as the goals of the department. I would advise him to include the staff in the decision making process whenever appropriate, but always maintain a professional relationship with them. I would tell him to treat everyone with respect and expect them to do the same. I would also tell him that I would be available anytime he needed my input.

Tom has to remember that he was given a promotion for a reason. His supervisor believes that Tom has the strengths and abilities to be a manger and was the right person for the job. Tom must believe this too. Tom should set high standards for himself and the staff. Mediocrity is not acceptable. Finally, he needs to listen to what his staff has to say. They should feel that he is working with them and that they are all in this together, working toward a common goal.

Identify communication problems that have contributed to the conflict between Principal Varber and Associate Principal Howard. I found several communication issues between Principal Varber and Associate Principal Howard. First, Principal Varber spent a substantial amount of time away from campus. Although, in the beginning it was clear that the reason for his employment was to improve the relationship between the community and the school. Secondly, his failure to acknowledge his staff for their outstanding job performance when he receives community recognition about the school. It seems like he only wanted recognition for himself and not when others did well. Associate Principal Howard brought to his attention that he did not recognize his staff for their contributions for him receiving the outstanding educator award from the Chamber of Commerce. Lastly, his relationship with the administration team and staff could have been better. Mrs. Howard informed Principal Varber that the staff considered him as a “phantom” principal because of his absence. Here Tom stands up for himself, yet at the beginning of the story we see that Tom was too scared to reply to his parents when they were fighting, but now he can stand up for himself. This is illustrated when Tom thinks to himself, “I was thinking that I might take a drink to my father, but dared not as yet suggest it” (Ross 221). This little outburst from Tom shows that he is trying to make his voice and opinions be heard over the adults. He wants to be heard and wants to be seen like a responsible person and is trying with some, but little avail. Tom also tries to work against fate by trying to teach Phillip how to stook.
Tom can now start to show his maturity everywhere, including at home. In the beginning, Tom is running from Aunt Polly's punishments, hurries through chores, and plays hooky from school. When he convinces kids to do his job of whitewash the fence for him, it shows immaturity. Also when he runs away from home to the island, he doesn't leave a note.

In the word homeless there are two root words, home and less. Home is what most people would define as the place where they live, or grew up. Less, simply means not as much as. When you combine the two together homeless equals someone who grew up in a home that was held to less standards than what they would normally be held up to. Dr. Pamela Fischer, of John Hopkins University, studied arrest records in Baltimore and discovered that even though homeless people were more likely to commit non-violent and non-destructive crimes, they were less likely to commit violent crimes against people. (NLCHP) The crimes that these people are committing are necessary to keep them alive. These crimes include sleeping, eating, and panhandling. Making it illegal to perform necessary daily activities in public when homeless people have no where else to go makes it impossible for homeless people to avoid violating the law. (NLCHP) Another myth about homeless people is that they do not work and that they get their money from public assistance programs. A study done in Chicago discovered that ?39% of homeless people interviewed had worked for some time during the previous month?. (NLCHP) Many of the people who do not work are actively trying to find jobs, but are discriminated against by the work force. Stereotypically speaking, chronically homeless people usually are drug addicts or they have some type of mental health issue. An abundance of men, women, and even children are homeless and sleeping on the streets. Citizens often feel sorry for these people and want to help them out and put them into a community shelter so they can be safe, but couldn’t because of the lack of shelters nearby.
Amanda has probably not done everything right for her family, but her intentions have always been good. Tom has lost patience and wants to pursue his journey away now. There's no waiting to save the money for the dues. He doesn't stop going to the movies for a week or quit smoking to save money. He takes the money for the light bill. We know this is a painfully big deal and he has intentionally hurt his family at this point. He knows he has put himself in a position of no turning back. Now, he has to go. As if to make it okay in someway, he says, ""I'm like my father. The bastard son of a bastard! See how he grins? And he's been absent going on sixteen years!" In recent years, America’s culture has been changing due to economic, political, and social issues. These issues have caused a lot of stress on America resulting in abject poverty in several cities. Poverty is not nationwide, but if dealt with lightly, the affects can be catastrophic. There are many things that cause people to become homeless, such as unemployment, relationship problems, and being evicted from ones domicile either by a landlord, friend or even a family member. However, with every cause there must be an effect. After meeting with the president and listening to the issues and concerns regarding, Jack I would highly recommend for a personal improvement plan (PIP) to be developed. I would suggest for the president to have a one-on-one meeting with Jack regarding the negative feedback he has received from the staff. Jack should be fully aware of the expectations that are being sought as a result of this improvement plan. When laying out the areas of improvement, the first concern would be the negative attitude he has toward his staff. Next, would be to address the several complaints on company surveys from his department as well as outside of his department. These situations take time so I would recommend a 90-day plan with a follow up with the employees immediately after the plan has exhausted. The purpose of the PIP would be to improve employee morale, create a healthier work environment, and assure that the employees are receiving adequate support and resources needed to perform productively.
