Possibilities in Ralph Waldo Ellison's Invisible Man
In the 1900’s opportunities for black people were very limited compared to the 21st century, where jobs are in abundance and more people seek-out for those opportunities. According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, edited by Neufeldt and Sparks, an opportunity is, “A combination of circumstances favorable for the purpose; a good chance as to advance oneself” (413). It is not what opportunity is made available unto oneself but what decision is made to advance oneself to a higher level in life. In Invisible Man, Ralph Waldo Ellison on the belief of a land of infinite possibilities/opportunities composed this novel; his first novel. Ellison believed that a wise and opportune person can turn a pile of rocks into a bag of rocks; basically saying that one may take what they have available unto them, and create better opportunities, for themselves and other generations to come. Invisible Man is about finding oneself and in that nature of discovery, running with one’s destiny, and making any possibility into infinite possibilities, turning the smallest of opportunities into the biggest of opportunities. Invisible Man is about finding possibilities where possibilities seem impossible.
Ralph Waldo Ellison was born on March 1st in 1914 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Ellison gained international fame from his first novel Invisible Man, which was inspired from his belief in the myth of the frontier, where he viewed the United States as the land of infinite possibilities and opportunities. The close-knit black community in which Ellison grew up in supplied him with images of courage and endurance.
While growing up many of times one may find themselves searching for their purpose in life through the different activities that one may join and often times quit in search of something of better interest, something that he/she may feel fits their personality/character in a better manner. Darnell Tingle once said, “Character is what you know you are, not what others think you have”.
While Ellison was surrounded by the faces of unfamiliarity he also felt lost, however invisible at the same time, wondering ‘What am I doing here… is this place really for me… do I want this?’
Ellison tried to find himself while asking others around him questions only he could answer.
In Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, he argues about the American life for the black race, losing their identity because of the inequality, and limitations. In his reading Ralph Ellison used many symbolisms such as unusual names, to tell his story.
Invisible Man is a novel written by Ralph Ellison that delves into various intellectual and social issues facing African-Americans in the mid-twentieth century. Throughout the novel, the main character struggles to find out who he is and his place in society. He undergoes various transformations, notably his transformation from blindness and lack of understanding in perceiving society (Ellison 34). To fully examine the narrator’s transformation journey, several factors must be looked at, including the Grandfather’s message in chapter one, Tod Clifton’s death, the narrator's expulsion from college, and the events in the factory and the factory hospital (Ellison 11). All these events contributed enormously to the narrator finding his true identity.
In 1954, Ralph Ellison penned one of the most consequential novels on the experience of African Americans in the 20th century. Invisible Man chronicles the journey of an unnamed narrator from late youth until well into adulthood. As an African American attempting to thrive in a white-dominant culture, the narrator struggles to discover his true identity because situations are never how they truly appear to him. One of the ways Ellison portrays this complex issue is through the duality of visual pairs, such as gold and brass, black and white, and light and dark. These pairs serve to emphasize the gap between appearance and reality as the narrator struggles to develop his identity throughout the novel.
Being in a state of emotional discomfort is almost like being insane. For the person in this discomfort they feel deranged and confused and for onlookers they look as if they have escaped a mental hospital. On The first page of chapter fifteen in the novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, the main character is in a state of total discomfort and feels as if he is going mad. From the reader’s perspective it seems as if he is totally out of control of his body. This portrayal of the narrator is to express how torn he is between his two selves. He does not know how to tell Mary, the woman who saved him and has been like a mother to him, that he is leaving her for a new job, nor does he know if he wants to. His conflicting thoughts cause him to feel and seem a little mad. The author purposefully uses the narrator’s divergent feelings to make portray him as someone uncomfortable in is own skin. This tone is portrayed using intense diction, syntax, and extended metaphors.
Ralph Ellison published the book ’Invisible Man’ at Random House in 1952 (Wright, Richard, Michel & and Claude 3). One time he fell sick and he decided to take some time away from work in order to recover. During this time, Ralph developed an inspiration to write a collection which later became the “Invisible Man’. In the book, the narrator starts off by saying that he is invisible, a form that is not physical, but it is a refusal of others to recognize his presence. Further, the narrator says that owing to his invisibility, he has had to keep off from the world to live underground, eventually vandalizing power from the Monopolated Light & Power Company (Wright et.al 117). However, the narrator realizes his importance despite his individuality complex, thus he decides to uphold his distinctiveness without sacrificing his dependability to the society. Finally, the narrator feels ready to leave his hiding place and face the world.
Ralph Ellison’s novel “Invisible Man” talks about racial issues of Negro life. Ellison expresses the challenges of assimilation of living in the White American society. The story focus on social class, race, and gender roles in African American culture. Ralph Ellison’s writing is engaging; he is able to fulfill major roles of encouragement and motivation to black lives. Also Ellison approaches the struggle of humanity towards the youth of black males. The battle royal scene in the novel exposes the conflict of man versus society in having justice and equality.
Simply, Kim posits, that since these white men withhold themselves from lashing out in violence towards the black boys in the ring, they instead, watch as the young black males harm each other as a means of self pleasure. This can be equated to an individual masturbating to pornographic images or film. As the white townsmen watch the Battle Royal, porn, they begin to get aroused until they climax from viewing the last black boy standing in the ring.
Ralph Ellison speaks of a man who is “invisible” to the world around him because people fail to acknowledge his presence. The author of the piece draws from his own experience as an ignored man and creates a character that depicts the extreme characteristics of a man whom few stop to acknowledge. Ellison persuades his audience to sympathize with this violent man through the use of rhetorical appeal. Ethos and pathos are dominant in Ellison’s writing style. His audience is barely aware of the gentle encouragement calling them to focus on the “invisible” individuals around us. Ralph Ellison’s rhetoric in, “Prologue from The Invisible Man,” is effective when it argues that an individual with little or no identity will eventually resort to a life of aimless destruction and isolation.

The Liberty Paint Factory in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man provides the setting for a very significant chain of events in the novel. In addition, it provides many symbols which will influence a reader's interpretation. Some of those symbols are associated with the structure itself, with Mr. Kimbro, and with Mr. Lucius Brockway.
In the “Invisible Man Prologue” by Ralph Ellison we get to read about a man that is under the impressions he is invisible to the world because no one seems to notice him or who he is, a person just like the rest but do to his skin color he becomes unnoticeable. He claims to have accepted the fact of being invisible, yet he does everything in his power to be seen. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Invisible as incapable by nature of being seen and that’s how our unnamed narrator expresses to feel. In the narrators voice he says: “I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids- and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, understand simply because people refuse to see me.”(Paragraph #1) In these few words we can
Ralph Ellison’s The Invisible Man harkens to DuBois’ idea of being “in the world, but not of it,” (vii). The text grapples with the concept of existing in the world yet not being authentically seen by the people of the world. The condition of the narrator, his invisibility, allows Ellison to explore double consciousness, the process of becoming aware of one’s duality, and the effects that existing as two selves can have on the psyche.
Ralph Ellison uses several symbols to emphasize the narrator’s attempt to escape from stereotypes and his theme of racial inequalities in his novel, Invisible Man. In particular, the symbolism of the cast-iron is one that haunts the narrator throughout the book. Ellison’s character discovers a small, cast-iron bank that implies the derogatory stereotypes of a black man in society at the time. From its “wide-mouthed, red-lipped, and very black” features, to its suggestion of a black man entertaining for trivial rewards, this ignites anger in Ellison’s narrator. The cast-iron bank represents the continuous struggle with the power of stereotypes, which is a significant theme throughout the novel.1 The bank plays a significant role in the book by aiding to the author’s message of stereotypes, the narrator’s search for an individual identity, and his languished desire for equality.
Before writing Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison moved to New York in the summer of 1936 to pursue his passion for art and music. Following his move to New York, Ellison was introduced to Harlem artists, Richmond Barthé and Romare Bearden. Under the instruction of Barthé and the friendship of Bearden, Ellison created a visual art philosophy of his own—a belief that people’s interactions with the display and meaning of art convey their inner thoughts (Hill). Also, after becoming close friends with Richard Wright, Ellison gained a newfound interest in prose. Ellison decided to follow writing as a profession after several letters to Wright, because of a desire to display his new philosophy in words. He was dedicated to creating a literary style that

Ellison's Invisible Man is a novel that deals with many different social and mental themes and uses many different symbols and metaphors. The narrator of the novel is not only a black man, but also a complex American searching for the reality of existence in a technological society that is characterized by swift change (Weinberg 1197). The story of Invisible Man is a series of experiences through which its naive hero learns, to his disillusion and horror, the ways of the world. The novel is one that captures the whole of the American experience. It incorporates the obvious themes of alienation and racism. However, it has deeper themes for the reader to explore, ranging from the roots of black culture to the need for strong Black leadership to self-discovery.
