The process of cloning is a very complicated process, especially if trying to clone other humans. So far, the process of cloning has really only extended to the cloning of animals. Unfortunately, the results for animal cloning have been mostly unsuccessful, producing a very high failure rate, and leaving no hope for human cloning. According to experts, “Even after several years of additional research and the development of new methods for extracting and transferring genetic material, well over ninety-nine percent of all cloning attempts still fail” (Dudley). The animals among this percentile rarely make it out of childhood, considering that only three to five percent of successful pregnancies, using cloned embryos, live to adulthood (Dudley). Even with all the new technology being used in today’s cloning experiments, the results still come up negative (“Human Cloning”). In fact, “For every 100 experiments only one, two, or if lucky, perhaps three appear to produce a viable offspring in surrogate mothers (“Human Cloning). Diversity is important in maintaining a healthy society, and in maintaining the differences among all human beings. Cloning is best described as “…copying or replicating biological traits in organisms” (Oak). Therefore, creating the same traits in people would greatly reduce diversity in society. The objective of this essay is to inform the reader(s) about human cloning. I believe that human cloning is morally wrong because one should not have the right to avoid daily responsibilities by getting someone else to handle them. There will be four sections of this paper that will be discussed. Theses new discoveries of genetical engineering and cloning closely parallel the process of giving birth in the Brave New World. In Brave New World, people are born artificially in test tubes. Everyone is condidtioned to be the same: to share the same characteristics, their way of thinking, and their ideas. People who claimed individual thought against the community- such as Bernard in the beginning of the novel- were considered to have a defect from a lab mistake during birth, and were ostracized from the community, until they conditioned themself to think like the rest of the community. Scientific development in both genetical engineering and cloning, have made the idea of anti-individualism closer to a reality. Genetical engineering enables parents to choose characteristics for their child, creating a “poster child'; which ultimately ends in every child becoming a poster child and all looking the same. In the article that I chose there are two opposing viewpoints on the issue of “Should Human Cloning Ever Be Permitted?” John A. Robertson is an attorney who argues that there are many potential benefits of cloning and that a ban on privately funded cloning research is unjustified and that this type of research should only be regulated. On the flip side of this issue Attorney and medical ethicist George J. Annas argues that cloning devalues people by depriving them of their uniqueness and that a ban should be implemented upon it. Both express valid points and I will critique the articles to better understand their points.
