27 March 2014 America and Porn Americans are divided on the issue of pornography and if it is morally acceptable. CovenantEyes.com reports that there have been more than five hundred twenty-four million pornography searches since the beginning of 2014. Which leads to the question: Should America ban porn on the Internet? Porn should be banned on the web because it psychologically and socially damaging to the viewer and the female stars in action. Women are physically being objectified within the industry. But teenage and college girls assume that the industry is an easy way to earn extra money, like prostitution. They do not realize that being a porn star is actually terrifying. Vanessa

By having it available on the Internet, boys and girls can begin to view it at a young age. It might lead to a false definition of sex and love. A child would think abusing women is “love” and that they should have sex casually with multiple partners. A teen’s porn addiction may open doors to prostitution and sexual habits, in order to experience material found in videos, like BDSM (dominance and submission). Porn allows young men to think it is okay to degrade women by calling them a “bi**h” or “c**t.” By calling a woman derogatory terms, they may use such words in anger around parents or colleagues, which is considered to be socially unacceptable. Although addictions get out of hand, porn also contributes to unrealistic ideas and …show more content…
As women spend time with their boyfriends, she could see or walk in on a video. While the video progresses, insecurities arise that she is not good enough or that her body is not as “perfect” as the other female (a porn star). Her relationship can begin to fail due to jealousy, due to lack of attention. Both her insecurities and jealousy would cause her to feel as if she has competition. A divorce can result because the individual may stop spending time with family. Finances could go awry because all his or her money is going to fuel his addiction to adult movies. Despite the relationship issues, there are negatives that occur in society. Society tends to judge a book by its cover, especially for a profession or career. Pornography is somewhat taboo when it comes to respecting its stars. In March 2014, a Duke University student, Belle Knox, earned backlash because she was a star outside of academics. Knox has received death threats and judgment by guys at parties etc. She had decided to do porn to pay for her education. America should ban porn on the Internet because the individuals never get to live a normal
Today, “60 percent of children who use the Internet regularly come into contact with pornography” (Hanes 1). In Stephanie Hanes’ article, “Little Girls or Little Women? The Disney Princess Effect”, she provides undeniable evidence to suggest that the culture of today’s world causes sexualization of children, specifically of females, at an alarmingly young age. This sexualization has become increasingly invasive in the past decade, so much so that parents, educators, and even more recently politicians have decided to try to counteract some these negative effects. In this article, Stephanie Hanes uses strong research with logical arguments that support this
In addition to bolstering my argument in favor of pornography, I will also demonstrate the strength the argument has in modern discourse by dispelling common myths in favor of the censorship of pornography, such as the increase in violence towards, the subjugation of, and objectification of women, and I will subsequently offer a substantial rebuttal.
A review of the contemporary research on the negative effects of pornography is replete of scholarly and anecdotal evidence and opinion about the damages associated with viewing it. But the evidence is limited when it comes to criticism of mainstream media’s damages to certain groups, particularly young women with their romantic comedies.
Today, pornography has different targeted audiences based on various categories of pornography. There are pornographies made that are targeted toward women in which are slow and focused more on the people’s language rather than solely genitally focused. Most pornographies, however, are made specifically for men. These videos contain a large focus on the genitals, the men are portrayed as dominant, and the women please the men taking any measures necessary. According to a study, pornography that was intended for men and women aroused the men who were being studied. Women on the other hand, activated negative affects after watching the pornography intended for men and positive after watching the pornography intended for women (Mosher, 1994). In general, men are the main target of pornographies and women as well as feminists believe that pornography should not characterize women as objects. Also when making this study, it was difficult to find pornography that was made by women, majority of the videos are made by men and produced for
Since their founding, computers and the Internet have become a tool that nearly every man, woman, and child in the World have been able to use. E-mail has become one of the Worlds fastest growing ways of communication and the Internet has become one, if not the largest source of information available today. You can find just about everything you wanted to know about anything with the stroke of a few keys on the keyboard. However, along with these positive aspects of the Internet, there lies much negativity surrounding the internet and its use. Access to teenage pornography, bestiality, brutal murder pictures, XXX stories, and other un-ethical sites is extremely easy. In fact, the pornography industry has grown 63% since the Internet was first available for use.(Bishop 91) It is one of the leading industries on the Internet and has become quite a controversy in the United States. Censorship of such sites has done very little due to the fact that most parents feel that these sites are not accessed by their children. We have currently found no solution that has worked and many government officials see the problem only getting worse. Pornography on the Internet though should not be banned, but rather better controlled and censored due to its availability and graphic nature.
Sitting in Mass on Sunday, looking out at our fellow worshippers in the congregation and I wonder if it is possible that about half of the men there and 1 in 6 of the women are struggling with addiction to pornography. After all these are good Catholics. They come to Mass every Sunday, receive communion and act charitably toward each other. Could they be leaving church and sitting on the internet searching for porn? A survey from techadvisors shows Sunday is the busiest day of the week for porn ‘activity’. About 40 million people view porn regularly or a little over 28,000 every second. It would be foolish to believe that some of that number are not in our community leading one life in public and another in private. Some may not even realize that they have an addiction and just think of it as a pastime that doesn’t harm anybody.
Studies about men and women, boys, and girls who have been involved in prostitution and/or pornography have revealed a lot. They are the hardest patients to treat. They say they want help, but nothing thatþs done to help them out works. They run back. They just donþt seem to want to change. Women who have been subjected to continuous abuse and victimization over which they have no control or understanding have developed a sense of psychological paralysis that prohibits their ability to do anything positive about further victimization. They believe they are unable to change their destructive behavior. They become entrapped in helplessness and hopelessness. They feel themselves to be out of control of their lives. Essentially, they have developed a chronic disorder as a result of their victimization and an inability to separate themselves from the sexual exploitation in order to make a better life for themselves.
Technology and things like social media have a great effect on sexual views, behavior and practice among generations. Recent advances in technology are influencing sexual behaviors because of things like computers, smartphones, sex technology (sex toys, pornography, etc.). The list is growing and so are the many possible uses of these technologies. In fact, one in every ten websites is a pornography website, (Krotoski, 2011). This alone gives individuals access to the erotic, fantasy world of sex. These advances in technology, and the availability of this information has made it easier than ever to enter the world of sex.
While it is certainly interesting to see how deeply pornography has permeated our culture, it does nothing to show whether this is good or bad. Many defend their right to record, publish, sell, buy, and view pornography, but that is not the real question. Rational people will decide for themselves what they should do about it and parents will decide what they need to do for their children, but first pornography must analyzed. Only after the pros and cons are measured should the policy be altered.
...raising our voices and using freedom of speech will make more of a difference. I also agree with Mill because though Mackinnon talks about how women are oppressed because of porn, I am sure there are a number of other causes that lead to oppression, not just porn. For instance, if porn was to be censored, I doubt that would immediate abolish rape cases and sexism. I feel like if we let the government control what we watch, we, as a society, will let the government control our lives. We may even lose the simplest privileges and rights we have as individuals. I believe porn is not immoral because, again, it does not cause harm to individuals in society, besides the individual watching it their self. Many people may think that people should not spend money or time on porn but the opinions of the majority should never control the individuals right to choose.
Fisher, William, and Azy Barak. “Internet Pornography: A Social Psychological Perspective On Internet Sexuality.” Journal of Sex Research. 38.4 (Nov. 2001): 312-24.
Pornography on the Internet creates many unwanted vices in today's society. Internet pornography should have stricter laws and regulations or even better, pornography should be banned from the Internet.
In recent years, pornography has established itself as perhaps the most controversial topic arising out of the use of the Internet. The easy availability of this type of sexually explicit material has caused a panic among government officials, family groups, religious groups and law enforcement bodies and this panic has been perpetuated in the media.
To conclude this report pornographic material is hurting America but not in a big way and it is bringing us down as a society and not really being great role Models to our kids. Its might be a good thing to have and to some people might be A bad thing to someone. Thank you for reading my report.
It is important to note that in the past, communication technologies that were prevented from being used as a means of sexual communication were vastly subject to failure. For example, it is highly arguable that one of the main reasons for the victory of VHS tapes over the Beta format is that Beta refused to let pornography occupy their tapes. Similarly, many people attribute AOL’s victory over Prodigy to the fact that Prodigy refused to allow sexual content (Pornography and Technology). Pornography and technology are so tightly woven together that it would appear that neither can exist without the other, at least not in their current forms.
