Hong Kong's straight-laced, buttoned-down business reputation suggests a city that's idea of a party is champagne, cheeseboards, and soothing music. But don't be fooled. Beneath their suits, Hong Kong people have a party animal ready to escape—and it frequently does. Hong Kong has long been a stronghold of Chinese culture and its traditional festivals are celebrated with energy, color, and lots of noise. Because most Chinese festivals are linked to the phases of the moon, festivals don't have any fixed date. However, the majority of the year some celebration is either in the planning or under-way. Chinese New Year (February) Three days of celebrations mark Chinese New Year, culminating with a fantastic firework display in Victoria Harbor and a traditional parade. How often does one actually consider where a product originates or under what conditions it was produced? While out shopping a consumers main focus is on obtaining the item needed or wanted not selecting merchandise based on the “made in” tag. It is common knowledge that many products are imported from other countries. However, little thought is given to the substandard conditions that workers endure to eke out a living to maintain a poverty stricken existence. In Mardi Gras: Made in China director David Redmon demonstrates the effect globalization and capitalism have on the lives of the owner and workers of a bead factory in China while contrasting the revelry of partygoers in New Orleans. Underpaid, overworked staff toil and live in an inhuman environment, exploited by a boss who demands much for little compensation while profiting greatly, to support themselves and their families.
To collect is to bring things together. However there is an art to collecting, as it is not simply just bringing miscellaneous things together. There is a common theme for the objects and together they serve as a special meaning to their collector. Hong Kong Reading - "The Book of the Year" Through imperialism, British rule encouraged industrialization and modernization which led to visible growth in the economy as the city is described as a trade center and important in manufacturing and banking, which suggests that the industries and businesses prospered. Additionally, the fear of Chinese rule suggests that businesses operated better under British rule, which shows how imperialism improved the lives of the people of Hong Kong compared to the government before imperial rule. The way that citizens of Hong Kong left the colony before it was returned to China further highlights the different effects of British rule and Chinese rule on the people, suggesting that British rule was preferred by the citizens of Hong Kong which is why they left rather than live under Chinese rule. This implies that the colonized people considered Great Britain’s imperialist rule to be better than the government before which was Chinese. This demonstrates that imperialism improved the lives of the colonized people because it helped the economy grow and prosper.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday that has been celebrated by lovers for hundreds of years. The holiday, with its origins dating back to the 5th Century, was started as a day to celebrate Saint Valentine, a priest who was imprisoned for marrying Roman soldiers who were forbidden to wed. Modern celebrations of Valentine’s Day, however, have changed the focus to a more commercialized day, run by Hallmark. Typical ways of celebration include giving your partner gifts such as chocolates in heart shaped boxes, roses, jewelry, teddy bears, and greeting cards, and many would agree that there is not a holiday where one’s relationship status is as salient as on Valentine’s Day (Morse and Neuberg). While these gift exchanges may seem like romantic,
