According to Pope Francis, author of the well-known papal encyclical letter Laudato Si’, mankind has a tendency to think of the environment as an unlimited, ever-evolving aspect of our world that is simply to say not so. Hurricanes, droughts, the rise in sea levels, earthquakes, the rise in temperatures, melting ice caps, and thunderstorms are all currently ongoing all over the world, yet in our hierarchy of government we have barely begun to take the initiative to stop such events from happening or at least decrease the amount of damage that it causes. We as humans have failed to understand the basic needs of nature and the environment all around us. In the passages from §183 and §186, Francis talks about ways in which governments ought to handle the fast-changing patterns of the environment. First things first he says that “We need to stop thinking in terms of ‘interventions’ to save the environment in [favor] of policies developed and debated by all interested parties” (Francis, §183, §186). What he is saying here is that governments need to stop simply taking baby steps with each environmental situation that occurs. For instance, in America, you see …show more content…
He says by acting fast to dire environmental situations it helps countries that get hit the worst. However, he also says that we do not want to risk going fast and end up getting it wrong. It makes the reader question which option is better; failing to succeed or failing to try. With all that said, Francis knows that it will come down to deliberate, clear plans that will trump it all in regards to saving the environment. Does Pope Francis cover the problems that governments all around the world, including the United States of America are having? Do we know the solutions to the problems Pope Francis brings
The two essays by Michael Pollan and Curtis white talk about climate change in regards to the relationship between the environment and human beings. Although the two essays share the same topic, they take the subject and engage the readers in totally different points of views. Pollan’s essay talks about global and ecological responsibility being a personal virtue while Curtis discusses the socio-economic or political issues underlying sustainability (Pollan; White). These two essays are very different in terms of voice; however these pieces of writing are both important for people all over the world to read. Climate change and environmental disasters are a real issue. Just this year, there have been more storms, cyclones, earthquakes and typhoons all over the world. One cannot look at the state of many developing counties where the majority of the population is exposed and vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This issue on developing a viable solution for the problem of anthropogenic gases and global warming is long from being found. Not only this, many people do not want to hear about this issue since they do not think it is real. Unless people have tangible proof that their cars, thermostats and aerosol cans are contributing to climate change, they are not going to give up their lifestyles. By synthesizing the two essays, one can see that there is a need for change and that it is not an issue which should be dealt with in terms of ecological factors or even personal virtue. The social, economic and political factors affecting this problem and the move towards real sustainability should also be a topic that will raise awareness.
Saint Fancis of Assisi Saint Francis was born in 1182, in Assisi Italy. His real name is Giovanni Francesco Bernardone, but his father wanted him to be called Francis. He received very little education as a child, even though his father was a rich merchant. His father, Pietro di Bernardone, was a wealthy merchant, and his mother's name was Pica.
On March 13, 2013, Jorge Bergoglio became Pope Francis at the age of 76. When he found out that he was to be the pope, he asked the crowd in St. Peter's Square to pray for him which the popes before him had never done. Instead of staying in the luxurious apartments that other popes lived in, Pope Francis chose a little two-room apartment. In choosing to live more simply, Pope Francis broke a tradition that had been upheld by popes for more than a century. Later in the year, he was named Person of the Year by Time magazine. He is the first pope that is not from Europe, and the first Jesuit pope. He took the name Francis from St. Francis of Assisi. He also participates in environmental and political arguments which shows that he really cares to make the world a better place. He supports the Big Bang theory and evolution, and also speaks out about how we can slow down global warming. Unlike other popes who believed that the Church had to follow strict step-by-step processes to be good Catholics, Pope Francis said, "I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting, and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a Church concerned with being at the center and then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures."
He wants the people to know that one of the main duties to our country is to conserve. This is our country and we should strive to keep it clean. One of our duties as Americans is to unsure safety and continuation to our nation. In paragraph 54, Theodore Roosevelt says, “Finally, let us remember that the conservation of our natural resources, though the gravest problem of today, is yet but part of another and greater problem to which this Nation is not yet awake, but to which it will awake in time, and with which it must hereafter grapple if it is to live–the problem of national efficiency, the patriotic duty of insuring the safety and continuance of the Nation.” He is trying to explain how eventually, we will have to take action if we want to keep our country alive. If we wait too long, it will be too late. Conserving our nation’s resources is the first of all the duties of true patriotism. Roosevelt ends his speech with, “When the People of the United States consciously undertake to raise themselves as citizens, and the Nation and the States in their several spheres, to the highest pitch of excellence in private, State, and national life, and to do this because it is the first of all the duties of true patriotism, then and not till then the future of this Nation, in quality and in time, will be assured.” Conservation is very important and as citizens of the United States, the responsibility falls on
Overall, Pope Francis places extreme concern on four areas, which are the idolatry of money, the option of the poor, inequality, and the common good/peace. Before reading Pope Francis’s book, I had a general familiarity with inequality and the option for the poor, but I was not completely aware of the idolatry of money in today’s society or peace in a Christian perspective. In Chapter 2, he starts talking about how we have found new idols in today’s society and how our relationship with money has taken control over not only our society, but also ourselves (Pope Francis, 55). Also, Pope Francis discusses how we as Christians need to realize that we are not exempt from concern for the poor and for social justice because it is required of everyone (Pope Francis, 201). In addition, he also talks about the vulnerability of certain groups and the progress of building people in peace, justice, and fraternity, which I will discuss in subsequent paragraphs. Prior to reading this book, I was aware of Pope Francis and some of his beliefs to an extent. I am Catholic, so I remember when he was first inaugurated as Pope and I remember hearing my family discuss some of his beliefs, but I was only somewhat aware of his style as a Christian leader. As a Christian leader, Pope Francis places emphasis on four areas of concern, which include: the new idolatry of money, option for the poor, inequality, and common good/peace.
As the head of the Catholic Church, it is expected of a Pope to make grand declarations about social justice and issues that concern the Church . His apostolic decrees call for christians everywhere to uphold workers rights and to provide a living wage to everyone. However, Pope Francis is the first pope who has spoken specifically on how to bring about true equality . He has made specific statements about politics and the economy that no pope has done before. His position against capitalism is starkly opposed to what we have learned in our Economics course. He has a great concern about inequality, greed and wantonness of ethics. Pope Francis’s views on the current culture are clearly evident in his Evangelii Gaudium.
"If we want to address global warming, along with the other environmental problems associated with our continued rush to burn our precious fossil fuels as quickly as possible, we must learn to use our resources more wisely, kick our addiction, and quickly start turning to sources of energy that have fewer negative impacts."
Despite the evidence to the contrary, many interest groups with considerable political clout have successfully perpetuated the argument that documented changes in the environment are a product of natural cyclical changes in climate, and are not associated with human activities. However, even the acceptance of this particular brand of reality is no grounds for the disregard of environmental consciousness. Even if one accepts the premise that recent climate change is not a result of human activity, the rationale behind environmental conservation remains valid.... ... middle of paper ...
The Rule of Benedict was written in the Middle Ages by St. Benedict of Nursia. In it he goes into great detail about what monastic life should look like including everything from how psalms should be sung to the sleeping arrangements of the monks. The strict guidelines provided by Benedict ultimately created basis for the types of monks and monasteries seen throughout the remainder of the Middle Ages. Because of this, The Rule became one of the most influential writings for Christianity.
Climate change is the main topic of this Encyclical. Climate change is portrayed in a way that reflects the current scientific consensus today. Hans Joachim Schellenhuber, a leading climate scientist, was a scientific adviser to the Pope while writing Laudato Si’.
In Abbot Mark’s lecture, he taught the Freshman class about one of the forefathers of Christianity and this college. Saint Benedict’s journey to God perfectly exemplifies the phenomenon that as one’s position in life changes, they must to alter the values they practice and live by in order to achieve the same goal. An acetic hermit should seek the virtue of self-discipline as they must create guidelines that will allow themselves to develop a deeper relationship with God, while a monk who is an acting member of a greater community must practice strict obedience so that he can better the community and his relationship to God. It is important for a liberal art’s student to understand what truths should be sought in what setting so that they too
There are three main issues that Pope talks about in his long poem "An Essay on Man." First, the poet evokes a timeless vision of humanity in which the universe is connected to a great chain that extends from God to the tiniest form of life. Secondly, Pope discusses God's plan in which evil must exist for the sake of the greater good, a paradox not fully understandable by human reason. Thirdly, the poem accuses human beings of being proud and impious. Pope feels that man claims more insight into the nature of existence then he possesses.
In February of 2015, Pope Francis made a public statement condoning the use of corporal punishment against children, stating that “it’s OK for parents to spank children, so long as it is done with dignity” (Smith-Spark, 2015). The pope addressed this issue in St. Peter’s Square as he was addressing the need for fathers and their significance in the family. He went on to say that the value surrounding reprimand must be done without causing sacrifice to the child’s dignity but one of penalty with absolution, even going so far as to say “When he punishes, he does it right and moves on” (Smith-Spark, 2015). The pope’s statement brought forth strong reaction from the general public on both sides of the argument yet much of the backlash against him was
He talks about how sea levels will rise and will be covering land in places like such as Florida and New York in his article called “Rising Sea Levels Threaten U.S. Cities”. The sea levels rising will cause some people to lose their living area. According to the passage, if we do nothing to stop climate change, over 26 million Americans ' homes might be inundated, and more than 1,500 U.S. cities and municipalities could find the areas where half of the residents live, also inundated. Moreover, the rate of increasing the sea levels is faster than ever. The passage mentions that the sea levels, rise in these 50 years is faster than the past 1,500 years. Moreover, there are more consequences caused by the climate change. According to Climate Central in Princeton, N.J., the sea levels increase might create some new wetland around the Mississippi River and there will be more flooding. Because of these consequences of climate change, the author suggests the US government to take action in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. How much sea levels increase is determined by how much carbon dioxide is emitted. The passage also warns those people who know the fact of climate change but still didn’t take action to prevent it. They will lose some of the land if we still do
We all belong to the same world and all of us have the same responsibilities towards the world and its environment. This fact might be hard to digest, but if we continue to pollute the Earth at the current rate, all of the world’s ocean waters will become one-hundred-thirty percent acidic. This means that the ocean will be unable to sustain most of its marine life and only a few creatures will be able to survive in the water. A big population of people think that they do not or have few responsibilities towards the environment. People think that the governor of a country should take steps to help the environment. They leave it to scientists since they have the technology to prevent pollution, or that is what most people think. There are more responsibilities to the world each individual has than most of realize. The amount of negligence and ignorance of humans towards the Earth is taking a heavy toll.
