It is interesting to think that society today can justify or criticize its action with a piece of literature or movie. Today, humans can be blamed for the maltreatment toward nature, as well as all the issues that have resulted from it. These issues, as a result of treating nature as an object that continuously yields necessities for humans, like water, only causes us to approach nature as a symbol of necessity, rather than an entity whom provides the population of the Earth with stable nutrition and habitat for survival. From this, it can be determined that popular culture reflects human treatment and view of nature, mirroring the scarring of nature by human interaction and degradation of nature.
In popular culture today, it is easy to find a part of oneself in forms of media released to the public. An example of this media could be movies. Movies are released monthly, sometimes even weekly to the public, and tend to have meaning behind them that a group of people, or even certain individuals can relate. Over the years, these films have become more geared toward reflecting the way humans destroy nature, rather than collaborate with it. In the movie 2012, humans are shown living everyday life happily, in a civilized urban area where the sun is always shining. Nature only exists to the extent that it gives humans the needs for survival: food and air. Nature finally starts acting different than usual. Unusual seismic activity is occurring, and eventually destruction by nature occurred within civilized regions of the world. This destruction by nature, of places that were urban, symbolized the belief by humans that nature was a force rather than a being. ...when was the last movie released that portrayed humans treating Mother Nature with compassion and love, rather than as an object? From this, it can be determined that popular culture definitely reflects the human perspective of nature, especially in relation to how it is treated. One may argue that popular culture shapes our view of nature, due to the fact that media released to the public shows humans destroying nature. If seen in a movie, one is more likely to “do it”. This statement can be negated due to the fact that we as humans are performing the destruction of nature, and are exposing it to societies around the world, in an effort to stop it in the future. Humankind is only a small portion of nature, but we are causing it most time. Hence, reflecting the destruction of nature by humans in popular culture, making an effort to end it in years to come.
The bond between humans and nature, it is fascinating to see how us has humans and nature interact with each other and in this case the essay The Heart’s Fox by Josephine Johnson is an example of judging the unknown of one's actions. She talks about a fox that had it's life taken as well as many others with it, the respect for nature is something that is precious to most and should not be taken advantage of. Is harming animals or any part of nature always worth it? I see this text as a way of saying that we must be not so terminate the life around us. Perceptions of the natural world have fluctuated throughout humanity’s short time on this earth, going in and out of style as societies and technologies have grown and died. As is the the very nature of literature itself, literature and its authors have managed to capture these shifting views, expressed and illustrated by the art of written word. Naturally, the literature chosen for us to read based on this fluid theme of nature encompasses an array of perspectives. One of these views is that nature is sublime and above all else, a reflection of all that which is perfection. Another is that nature is cold, uncaring, and indifferent to the vanities of humanity.
Many years ago, people saw the wilderness as a savage wasteland, but today, it is viewed as “the last remaining place where civilization, that all too human disease, has not fully infected the earth.” (Cronon) He discusses this changed point of view by stating the difficulties that society will have rectifying environmental ailments if it stops viewing wilderness as “a dualistic picture in which the human is completely outside the nature.” (Cronon) This is understandable because humans rely on others to create opinions, and they do not know how to form their own thoughts and solutions to issues such as environmental ones. As we look back on intellectual movements throughout history, it can be seen that the perceptions of nature changed drastically. The Enlightenment and Romantic movements are not separate from this observation; in fact they are prime examples, seeing as that in both eras nature is a major theme and exploration point for the people of the time. This interest in nature, however, is where the majority of similarities end between the two movements. In order to fully understand the differences in ideals between the two movements, we must focus on the disciplines they study most, the themes created when they are studied, and the way humanity is compared to nature.

In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, there are many themes, symbols, and motifs that are found throughout the novel. For my journal response, I have chosen to discuss nature as a prevalent symbol in the book. The main character, Montag, lives in a society where technology is overwhelmingly popular, and nature is regarded as an unpredictable variable that should be avoided. Technology is used to repress the citizens, but the oppression is disguised as entertainment, like the TV parlour. On the opposite end of the spectrum, nature is viewed as boring and dull, but it is a way to escape the brainwashing that technology brings. People who enjoy nature are deemed insane and are forced to go into therapy. Clarisse says “My psychiatrist wants to know why I go out and hike around in the forests and watch the birds and collect butterflies,” (Bradbury 23) which shows she is a threat to the control that the government has put upon the people by enjoying nature.
William Cronon’s “The Trouble With Wilderness” signifies the separation between ourselves and nature and also displays it through the distant and remoteness of its location, which also reminds us that we our a part of this nature, even though we are active in civilized society. We also forget that one of the fundamental tenets of environmentalism is the holiness of the wilderness. Through William Cronon’s introduction, we can garner that there is danger lurking in the idea of wilderness, the habitat is undisturbed, left alone by civilization. People never want to see the dark side of an industry which is why society doesn’t seem to care or be informed. What this reminds me of personally is the show Scooby Doo which is about monsters and teenagers investigating them, trying to figure out what it is and at the end of every show it’s always a human which gives a powerful message because at the end of the day humans are the monsters, are we the monsters today?
