“Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero”- Marc Brown. S.E. Hinton’s novel, ΅The Outsiders” was published on April 24, 1967. The book is based on the conflict between two groups, the Greasers and another more higher class group called the Socs. A Soc is someone with a wealthier lifestyle, whereas a Greaser is someone of lower class. The Greasers are a gang/family that stick together because of the difficult circumstances they’ve experienced. Ponyboy was a 14 year old with two older brothers. One of them named Darrel, a twenty year old nicknamed Darry. Darry and Ponyboys relationship isn’t the best because of how they aren’t very close, the loss of their parents, and how Ponyboy and Darry’s relationship has changed. Ponyboy and Darry didn’t have the best relationship as brothers. Ponyboy and his other brother Sodapop got a long way better because Ponyboy thinks Sodapop understands him better than Darry. Their last fight ended up with Ponyboy and Johnny running away. He ran away because he didn’t want to be around Darry. Darry is more of Ponyboys parent then brother that’s why Pony doesn’t feel as close to Darry as he is to Soda. Darry started to go easier on Ponyboy after everything that happened because he doesn’t want to lose Ponyboy just like they lost Johnny and Dally. Johnny died from a saving little children from a church fire, Dally couldn’t live without Johnny so he committed suicide by a cop. If Ponyboy ends up hurt or dead Darry might not be able to handle it and he might go the same way Dally did.
