Pollution has been found to be a major conflict in today’s society. It’s no doubt that the air we all breathe is filled with toxics. Allowing the toxic chemicals to penetrate deep into the lungs tend to cause damage. In addition, multiple forms of contamination have been in found in many ecosystems as well. These particles poison soils and streams, killing plants and animals. Some particles come naturally, but many of them are caused by us, humans.
The increase in trash is due to population growth and consumerism. Food is a major factor to landfill waste. Up to 40 percent of food produced in the United States is trashed each year, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Household pollutants also contaminate and persist in the environment.
The book I choose for my book report was “Garbology” a book written by Edwards Humes. I found this book a very interesting book and was quite influential. The book “garbology” focuses on many concerns that are still relevant in society today. Each of these issues circles around the fact that the people in the United States produce way to much garbage. Americans produce more trash than anyone else on the planet throwing away 7.1 pounds per person per day, meaning on average each American is on track to generate 102 tons of trash a year. Many wonder if each American can accumulate this much trash in his/her lifetime will this become a problem. The answer is yes; this is currently a problem, has been a problem in the past and will continue to
The first think that I see when I walk outside everyday is the layer of haze that looms across the Wasatch Front. It doesn’t surprise me that The American Lung Association gave Salt Lake City an F, on our “State of the Air” report card. (American Lung Association,2013).What companies are the biggest contributor to our pollution? Should our children suffer the consequences of pollution? There are many causes and effects of pollution along the Wasatch Front, which includes large industrial companies, commercial companies and household pollution.
The Chesapeake Bay has faced an excessive amount of pollution over the past century. The water in the bay has become so highly polluted that It is capable of causing harm to humans coming in direct contact with the water. Although algae serves a vital role in the bay’s ecosystem, it also creates a problem that is causing a large amount of the problem.
Consumable goods harm the environment in many ways. Every piece of trash that is thrown away is either taken to a landfill, where it is buried, or to an incinerator, where it is burned. In 2006, Americans created 251 million tons (227.7 million metric tons) of trash. Currently, 55 percent of the trash in the United States gets buried in landfills. This amount of trash is so great that more and more landfills have to be created
Air pollution has become a significant problem in the US as well as the world over years. It’s the result of variety of sources like industrial, agriculture, mechanical and transportation. Sadly, transportation which releases a great amount of carbon dioxides, nitrogen oxides and other toxicity is proven the leading cause of air pollution. There are several transportation factors that contribute to air pollution in the US.
Pollution is a serious issue that should be taken into consideration. Many people think that pollution doesn’t hurt them so they throw garbage on the ground, indeed they are destroying our Earth and also harming themselves. Pollution refers to the introduction of harmful substance and product in the environment. Nowadays, our planet is suffering from many types of pollution, for instance, the main types are water, air, and soil pollution. Moreover there are various sources that cause pollution. Ocean pollution is the unseen tragic that leads to thousands of marine species death, which increased because of the massive amount of oil spills, chemicals, industrial waste, and sewage. In consequently ocean pollution affects human beings' health and
Toxic pollution is one of the most underreported global problems affecting a lot of people; this is because of lack of data. Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to the health effects of pollution. More than three million children under the age of five die annual due to environmental factors. Toxic pollution interferes with the children’s development, causing damages that can last a lifetime. Babies are also being born with birth defects. The amount of people at risk of death and disease from toxic pollution is greater than those that suffer from malaria and close to those affected by HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Death is not the only end result; many people affected by pollution have to deal with the long-term illnesses, neurological damage, and diseases caused by toxic
To sum up, pollution doesn’t end on these types only, but eventually all types of pollutants effect animals as well as humans, and man-made activities are contaminating the world's ecosystems and disrupting the lives of animals.
Food waste is the biggest space consumer in our landfills, which may seem surprising, but shouldn’t be based on the amount of food that is consumed on a daily basis and the large proportion of food that is wasted. The main problem with the amount of food waste in landfills, is that it produces methane as it decomposes which is detrimental to the atmosphere as a whole, and can have lasting effects. The buildup of all the methane produced results in huge amounts of global warming potential which is extremely detrimental to our environment. Also, because of the fact that so many resources are used in order to grow certain foods, they are all being put to waste when the food that used these resources goes directly to landfills. This applies to water usage, soil richness, and petroleum usage. As far as costs go, food waste affects the economy by about $750 billion a year, which is a massive amount of money that could be going elsewhere. Because we are losing so much money, it is clear that there is a great need for change in the food system, especially in the United
The United States produces “about 8.25 billion tons of solid wastes each year” (Russell 1). People do not realize the impact they have on our planet and environment. When people throw anything in the trashcan, they are contributing to the destruction of our planet. The number landfills in the United States are decreasing, but the amount and volume of waste being thrown into the new landfills is increasing (Russell 4). Because of this escalating amount of garbage, Methane which contributes to global warming is an outcome of these landfills (Russell 7). As a result, our planet is suffering because of this epidemic. The garbage being put in the landfills could be recycled, but not enough businesses, ...
Efforts to improve the standard of living for humans--through the control of nature and the development of new products--have also resulted in the pollution, or contamination, of the environment. Much of the world's air, water, and land is now partially poisoned by chemical wastes. Some places have become uninhabitable. This pollution exposes people all around the globe to new risks from disease. Many species of plants and animals have become endangered or are now extinct. As a result of these developments, governments have passed laws to limit or reverse the threat of environmental pollution.
Pollutants are the key elements of pollution, which are generally waste materials of dissimilar forms. Pollution disturbs our ecosystem and the balance of the environment. With innovation and development in our lives pollution has reached its peaks giving rise to global warming and human illness. When raw materials, water, energy and other resources are utilized more efficiently, when fewer harmful substances are substituted for hazardous ones, and when lethal substances are eliminated from the production process. Water pollution is also a major problem in the world because almost 60% of it is fish.
The burning of fossil fuels, gas operated vehicles add with the quality of the air.
Are you aware of the detrimental impacts that we have had on our environment? Every second, the Earth is being polluted by poisonous gases, waste products and due to human activities, the world’s climate is dramatically changing. In other words, these impacts do not only harm our environment but also our health. It has been scientifically proven that air pollution causes respiratory diseases and cancer, due to the inhalation of all the harmful chemicals. Water pollution can also lead to typhoid, diarrheal diseases and other waterborne disease, due to the intake of bacteria and parasites. Many people have died due to these health-related illnesses. So why are we still living in this awful condition? Air sustains us and water is a basic necessity, so we should do what we can to prevent pollution. In short, we should protect our environment to ensure a healthy life a...
America and Europe are at the top of the list for most waste generated according to Waste (4). This is very visible because there’s litter on every street in the towns and cities, as well in lakes, beaches, and rivers. The book Waste by Rob Bowden states that the amount of waste produced is increasing at a rate faster than population growth. About 1.5 million computers, in the U.K, are thrown away each year and most end up in landfills. There are 3 types of waste which are Municipal Solid Waste, Industrial Waste, and Hazardous waste. MSW includes waste from public garbage cans and local dumpsters. Industrial Waste includes massive amounts of waste water that is contaminated with chemicals. Hazardous waste is the most dangerous as it presents a danger to human health and the environment. Solutions for waste disposal take time because people need to consider their lifestyle and limit the amount of waste they generate. A good start is to recycle items such as paper, cans, plastic, and clothes. This way they don’t end up in landfills, beaches, or streets. Another solution is to join organizations that go around places to recycle, or organizations that demand the reduction in the amount of products that are being
