Machiavelli’s, “The Prince” marks the turning point in history, the origin of the study of politics and critical thinking. The Prince, is a handbook or an instruction manual for all rulers to use and to successfully rule a kingdom or state. Machiavelli wrote this during a time where modern day Italy was not unified. It was divided into small republics or kingdoms, which were constantly at war with each other. These republics were either in control of the church or rich families. Machiavelli originally wrote ‘The Prince” for Lorenzo Di Piero De Medici” of the Medici family that ruled Florence at the time. He talks about reality, the state of the nation at present and how to fix and improve it. He does not discuss about a Utopia, a place where ‘what ifs’ prevail. This Utopia does not exist and cannot exist but Machiavelli discusses about ‘what is’, he calls this the effectual truth which is a modern concept. Machiavelli discussed political realism. Political realism is the theory of political philosophy that attempts to explain, model and prescribe political relations. It takes as its assumption that power is (or ought to be) the primary end of political action, whether in the domestic or international arena. In the Prince, Machiavelli sets out to express the effectual truth of politics. To understand politics, one must first understand human nature. Machiavelli came to the conclusion that human beings are selfish creatures who are governed by their own self-interests “Of mankind we may say in general they are fickle, hypocritical, and greedy of gain.” He warns about humanity and about the dangers about doing good all the time, he describes this world as place where you must do what you have to, to survive. He knows and understands that people take advantage of others and set traps for them, to avoid them he writes about the Lion and the Fox, “The lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. A prince must do what is necessary. A leader must do what is required for the safety of his/her place, or nation, even if it is not an easy thing to do. The death of Osama Bin Laden, one of the most wanted terrorists in the world was killed by The United States Seal team. He was responsible for the plane crashes into the twin towers in September 2001 and was a major threat to America. The mission was supervised by the President, Obama. No one was aware that the mission was underway, not even the Pakistani officials. After the mission was successful and Osama was killed. Pictures of the mission were released. One pictured showed Obama with his national security staff, including Hilary Clinton. They were watching a live feed of the mission in the control room. It was a very Machiavellian moment for Obama. Machiavelli states, “A political leader taking the ultimate risks that go with the exercise of power now awaiting the judgement of fate. He knows that if the mission fails, his rule or presidency is over, while if he succeeds no one will ever question his willingness to take risks again. It was also Machiavellian in sense that in that moments when public necessity required action that ethics and religious values might condemn as immoral and unjust. Machiavelli believes that a government should be very structured, controlled, and powerful. He makes it known that the only priorities of a prince are war, the institutions, and discipline. His writings describes how it is more important for a prince to be practical than moral. This is shown where he writes, "in order to maintain the state he is often obliged to act against his promise, against charity, against humanity, and against religion" (47). In addition, Machiavelli argues that a prince may have to be cunning and deceitful in order to maintain political power. He takes the stance that it is better for the prince to be feared than loved. His view of how a government should run and his unethical conduct are both early signs of dictatorship.
Machiavelli’s views were drastically different from other humanists at his time. He strongly promoted a secular society and felt morality was not necessary but stood in the way of a successfully governed state. He stated that people generally tended to work for their own best interests and gave little thought to the well being of the state. He distrusted citizens saying, “In time of adversity, when a state is in need of its citizens, there are few to be found.” In his writings in The Prince, he constantly questioned the citizens’ loyalty and warned for the leaders to be wary in trusting citizens. Niccolò Machiavelli was a man who lived during the fourteen and fifteen hundreds in Florence, Italy, and spent part of his life imprisoned after the Medici princes returned to power. He believed that he should express his feelings on how a prince should be through writing and became the author of “The Qualities of a Prince.” In his essay, he discusses many points on how a prince should act based on military matters, reputation, giving back to the people, punishment, and keeping promises. When writing his essay, he follows his points with examples to back up his beliefs. In summary, Machiavelli’s “The Qualities of a Prince,” provides us with what actions and behaviors that a prince should have in order to maintain power and respect.
As he begins to conclude, Machiavelli states that the prince: “should think about avoiding those things which make him hated and despised.” (Mach 48) Although these lack any withstanding moral values, they are effective in the sense that they better serve their purpose. Machiavelli was seeking to display a way to hold political power by any means possible not a utopian state. This may mean malicious acts, imprisonment, and torture, or it may mean the utilization of power to achieve a common good. Machiavelli doesn’t elaborate on this. He concentrates on a realistic approach towards government, as he remains concerned with the establishment and protection of power.

"The Prince," written by Niccolo Machiavelli in 1513, is a political treatise addressed to the Medici family of Florentine. "The Prince" was written to analyze and explain the acquisition, perpetuation, and use of political power in the west. Machiavelli’s theories in the work describe methods that an aspiring prince could possibly use to acquire power, or an existing prince could use to keep power. Though this work was written in 1513 and published in 1532, its context can be applied to foreign policy in today’s world. The principles suggested by Machiavelli provide insight into the issues that arose with the war on Iraq and issues involved with occupation and transition to a new government.
First, Machiavelli’s method attempts to discard discussion of the “imaginary” political world and instead focuses on “real life” (Machiavelli 48). His end goal is to construct rubric for leaders to follow either to rule and unite (in this case Italy) in the Prince or create a powerful republic in the Discourses. His method is derived from comparing contemporary and historical events to illustrate and substantiate his argument. He is critical of how people interpret history (Machiavelli 83). His motivation for these views in The Prince was the reunification of the Italian city-states (Machiavelli, 78-79). Machiavelli wanted Italy to return to its glory of the Roman Empire (Machiavelli 78-79). Some of the beliefs of Machiavelli could be perceived as evil and cruel, but he found them necessary. Machiavelli was not concerned with making people happy. His purpose was outcome and success, and in his opinion, the only way to be successful was to be realistic. Written almost 500 years ago, Niccolo Machiavelli’s “The Prince” brings forward a new definition of virtue. Machiavelli’s definition argued against the concept brought forward by the Catholic Church. Machiavelli did not impose any thoughts of his own, rather he wrote from his experience and whatever philosophy that lead to actions which essentially produced effective outcomes in the political scene of Italy and in other countries. While Machiavelli is still criticized for his notions, the truth is that, consciously or subconsciously we are all thinking for our own benefit and going at length to achieve it. On matters of power where there is much to gain and a lot more to lose, the concept of Machiavelli’s virtue of “doing what needs to be done” applies rigorously to our modern politics and thus “The Prince” still serves as a suitable political treatise in the 21st century.
During the time 1469, a child by the name of Niccolo Di Bernardo Del Machiavelli was born. Some may know him as an Italian philosopher, humanist, or an evil minded fellow associated with the corruptness of totalitarian government.
