Politician and statesman are two terms that are used to define a political individual, and usually collaborate in their meanings. Many times, these two works can be used as synonyms when describing an individual, but they do have their subtle differences. Both a politician and a statesman are defined as “man who is a leader in national or international affairs” or “a man who is a respected leader in a given field” (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=statesman / http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=politician).
Although these two words are termed the same, they do have their differences in their actual meanings. A politician is someone who attempts to gain personal advantages, most likely by scheming or maneuvering. Also, a politician belongs to a political party, and most likely is far more interested in the betterment of their party then that of the nation in whole (http://www.unique-design.net/library/word/politic.html).
On the other hand, a statesman is a person who, even if they do belong to a political party, can put their party obligations aside and do what is in the best interest of the country. Today there are over 450,000 college athletes and the National College Athletics Association (NCAA) faces a difficult decision on whether or not college athletes should be paid. Many people believe that they should and many believe they should not. There are several benefits that college’s athletes receive for being a student athlete. Why should they receive even more benefits than their scholarship and numerous perks?

First, the Sociological approach and then the Institutional approach. In order to comprehend his analysis it is necessary to realize that party systems are in a constant state of evolution, they do not remain stagnant. This evolution may, at times, be imperceptible and at others very noticeable, such as during a revolution; but the change is undoubtedly occurring. It is much easier to understand these theories if you view these two theories from a flexible standpoint as opposed to having a concrete beginning and end with exact delineations in between.

Should college student-athletes be paid has become a much debated topic. The incentive for a student-athlete to play a college sport should not be for money, but for the love of the game. It has been argued that colleges are making money and therefore the student-athlete should be compensated. When contemplating college income from sporting events and memorabilia from popular sports, such as football and basketball, it must not be forgotten that colleges do incur tremendous expense for all their sports programs. If income from sports is the driving factor to pay student-athletes, several major problems arise from such a decision. One problem is who gets a salary and the second problem is how much should they be paid. Also, if the income from the sports do not cover the cost of the student-athlete salaries, tuition cost will most definitely rise. The flip side is that the student-athlete entered college, in many instances with a scholarship, chose to play a particular sport because they like to play the game and have therefore decided to participate and should not expect to be paid as a professional athlete. By paying student-athletes a salary would dramatically alter college life for student-athletes as well as non-student-athletes.

College bound students around the world are in search of an easier route to be accepted into college. What about college athletes? These students are those who stand out. Many college athletes feel as though they deserve a “reward” for enhancing the school’s program. Though they may deserve acknowledgement of their participation, lowering admission standards will lower their effort in school as well. Intercollegiate athletic programs corrupt their educational institutions by advertising a double standard and devaluing scholarships in favor of athletic competition.
Over the past few decades, there has been controversy over whether or not NCAA athletes should get paid in addition to the other incentives they already receive. This debate emerged in 1991 when the University of Michigan men’s basketball team, also referred to as the Fab Five, was recognized as the best recruiting class in college basketball history. Although NCAA athletes dedicate much of their time and energy to sport, they receive scholarships that cover majority of their college expenses giving them an unfair advantage, therefore student athletes should not get paid for participating in sport. The majority of college athletes do not receive a full scholarship, meaning the school is only paying for a portion of their tuition, meal plan, and housing. Scholarships are given out between D1, D2, and D3 schools. D2 schools are strict with the amount of scholarships that they can give their student athletes. The amount of scholarship money available is so small that they rarely give out full scholarships to anyone; they mainly split the scholarships out in portions. At Tarleton, for example, they start the freshman recruits on a very small scholarship at first, but the amount goes up every year the athlete stays there. Most of all D-3 schools can only supply “academic” scholarships, which don’t cover housing or a meal plan. Not to mention there are players who “walk on” and receive no scholarship at all. Despite the fact that players receive different scholarship amounts, they are spending the same amount of time devoted to their sport along with the same NCAA regulations preventing them from working. The salary will not only compensate them for the time and energy they give to the team, but will also help the costs that the different scholarships do not
As we all know, student athletes who play football or basketball with collegiate teams make millions of dollars for their institution by working hard to achieve trophies. Also, they make the name of their institution very popular in the country which will encourage more students to enroll in this school. So, that will bring a very big amount of money for the university. However, these athletes receive only scholarships not like professional players. For example, NBA players who also make millions of dollars for their teams get very high salaries in return to what they have accomplished. So, it is unfair for student athletes that they do not get paid compared to professional players. On the other hand, these institutions give couches much more money than student athletes who are the only reason for earing the money. For instance, according to Juan Duran a student athlete at the University of Bridgeport, “in some universities, the couches are the highest paid people in these institutions”. This leads us to figure out that these universities are exploiting student athletes by not giving them what they deserve.
