As the 19th Century came to a close, almost every sizable city had a political boss, or at least had one rising to power. Tons of immigrants from every part of the world began to pour into the major cities. Cities have had diversity in the past, but the huge diversity of the American cities was unique.

In the late nineteenth century known as the Gilded Age (or the Reconstruction period) and the early twentieth century known as the Progressive era, the nation went through great economic growth and social change. Beginning in the 1870s, there was rapid growth in innovations and big businesses. This could be because there was population growth and when there is population growth, there is a high demand for products and other necessities in order to strive in society. Many immigrants from Europe, mostly from the eastern and southern Europe, and Asia moved to American cities. Additionally, farmers from rural America desired to increase economic growth and since corporations ruled and political problems occurred, they decided to move into the cities.
In the years from 1860 through 1890, the prospect of a better life attracted nearly ten million immigrants who settled in cities around the United States. The growing number of industries produced demands for thousands of new workers and immigrants were seeking more economic opportunities. Most immigrants settled near each other’s own nationality and/or original village when in America.
The eastern frontier became the start of the “melting pot” due to many settlers coming in and settling in different areas in America. However, once people start migrating towards the west, everyone started to travel together and settle in together with people who were of the same race or ethnic group. Because many people settled together in the western frontier, racial tension rose between each group. For example, before the migration into the frontier, there was already discrimination between the whites and the Natives and blacks. The “new” immigrants came over hungry for work and were willing to work for a fraction of what the “old” immigrants would. The “new” immigrants came in unskilled and unaccustomed to American society, took the “old” immigrants jobs and shook up their neighborhoods; this created much tension between the two groups. The years after the civil war left one half of America, the north, satisfied and the other half, the south, mostly dissatisfied. Therefore the last third of the nineteenth century, 1865-1900, was a time period in which America was mending, repairing, improving, reshaping, and reconstructing its society, economy, culture, and policies. Basically it was changing everything it stood for. This continual change can be seen in the following events that took place during this time. These events are both causes and effects of why America is what it is today. These are some examples: the reconstruction of the south, the great movement towards the west, the agricultural revolution, the rise of industrialism, the completion of the transcontinental railroad, and America's growth to gaining world power. All of these are reasons and events that characterize America as being an ever-changing nation.
To say that immigrants in America have experienced discrimination would be an understatement. Ever since the country formed, they have been seen as inferior, such as African-Americans that were unwillingly brought to the 13 colonies in the 17th century with the intention to be used as slaves. However, post-1965, immigrants, mainly from Central and South America, came here by choice. Many came with their families, fleeing from their native land’s poverty; these immigrants were in search of new opportunities, and more importantly, a new life. They faced abuse and Cesar Chavez fought to help bring equality to minorities.

Wade and Ferree also state “sports are squarely on the masculine side of the gender binary” (Wade and Ferree, 174). Hence, we are brought up with the understanding that playing and talking about sports is a boy’s thing, which further promotes the notion that sports are a very masculine thing. Furthermore, as playing sports is competitive and is a way to show excellence, young boys are considered as “real boys” and “real men” later on. However, when boys do not talk about or play sports, they are considered feminine or “not real men.” The same rule applies for young girls. If young girls are too into sports, they are considered to be “too masculine.” This is true for me too. Some common symptoms of mild TBI are fatigue, headaches, visual disturbances, memory loss, poor attention/concentration, sleep disturbances, dizziness/loss of balance, irritability – emotional disturbances, feeling of depression, and seizures. Symptoms may not be present or noticed at the time of injury. They may be delayed days or weeks before they appear. Symptoms are often subtle and often times are missed by the injured person in their doctor. With mild TBI the person may look normal and often moves normal in spite of not feeling or thinking normal. This makes the diagnosis easily missed. The biggest changes that is first noticed is behavioral changes. Students with mild TBI usually do not face significant changes in their academic or language abilities. The next is moderate TBI symptoms. When a person falls, gets in an accident, or is hurt while playing sports there is always a possibility of brain injury. “Those aged 75 and older have the highest rates of traumatic brain injury-related hospitalization and death due to falls”. (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2013) There are three different levels of TBI that doctors are known to classify them as. These include mild, moderate, and severe. A fall of 20 feet (2 stories) onto an unyielding surface for an adult, or a fall of more than 10 feet (2-3 times the height of the child) for a child can cause severe injury in an adult and child. From when a baby is born they are either identified or told to be “feminine” or “masculine”. For many decades, females have been associated with raising children, wearing frilly dresses, responsible for all the house work, to keep passive, pure and to maintain themselves physically. Due the traits put on to not only girls but also boys it leads to their definition of what femininity should be or, in other words the “weaker sex”. These expectation put on by society onto the boys and girls of femininity often results in women being discouraged from doing activities such as sweating, being aggressive and, competing in sports and physical activities. It also results in boys thinking that it is okay to suppress women and make comments such as “She throws like a girl” or “This isn’t the kitchen”. The main reason for this is because society puts the expectation on women to be “ladylike,” and not to demonstrate any characteristics defined as being masculine. Even though these social norms are still evident today, there are legislations that I could say “try” to promote gender equity in sports, such as the Title IX which is “a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex ”. Even though the U.S have implemented the Title IX, it still does not create equal opportunities or protections under it for women. For example the Office of Civil Rights had a report saying that “it received more than 1,250 complaints over a four-year period from 2009 to 2012. The number of sexual violence complaints increased from 786 during the three-year period ending in 2011 to 854 in 2013-2014 ”. How can there be equity in sports when the laws implemented aren’t doing enough?
