All policies and procedures and local guidelines are put in place in day to day work with children and young people. Under the child protection Act staff are checked if they are suitable to work with children or not. In my setting if the manager is recruiting new staff members, they go through a DBS checks to make sure they have no criminal convictions. For example if I had any criminal convictions I would not be allowed to work with children or young people. I follow the health and safety policy by doing risk assessments in every room. We also do risk assessments throughout the day on a daily basis. We do a room risk assessment and a garden one. Risk assessments are very important in safeguarding children. We also have a visitors policy where all staff and visitors are recorded . When signing children in and out we make sure there are always two members of staff at the front door. In my setting we also encourage children not to put up with any behaviour from the adults or children that makes them feel threatened. We give them an opportunity to learn that no one has the right to do anything with them that makes them feel uncomfortable. We also promote this by talking about PANTS. We also have our confidentiality policy. We make sure every staff member has a clear understanding of the meaning of maintaining confidentiality. In my setting all parents have a very good bond with all staff members and all parents are aware that their family will be treated with confidence. No information is shared without their agreement except in the case of safeguarding children. All information is locked away in a filing cabinet. We follow the Children Act 1989 and 2000 by making sure children are safe from abuse and neglect. All staff members are able to recognise the signs of abuse and know how to report it. We always ensure the child’s voice is heard. We make sure children are enable to put across their views and ensure their rights are
All children and young people should have support regardless of who they are and the environments they come from. Children and young people should be supported to be healthy, enjoy life, have a good standard of living and be successful in everything they do. These are the five key principles to help get children and young people the best start in life. Children and young people have the right to voice their opinions and share any issues that are of importance to them. In the past this was often disregarded. Protection of the children’s act 1999 is so that any people who are considered unsuitable to work with children and young people are put on a list also known as (POCA). This list is to prevent the unsuitable people from gaining access to children. Unsuitable persons will not be allowed to work with any children weather its paid work or voluntary work. All childcare organisations must refer to this list through the criminal records bureau to check off names against the list and any persons found to be on it must not under any circumstances be employed. All physical contact with the children should ideally be avoided but in some situations this is not avoidable. E.g young children sometimes need a hug if they have hurt themselves, and at times the children will make physical contact an adult without warning. In these situations the adult should be aware of where they are and who is nearby. The adult should aim to never be left alone with a child (although in some situations this may be unavoidable such as personal care) and if they are the adult must go to lengths to protect themselves, such as leaving the doors open, telling other member of staff where and why they are going to be alone with a child. Ensuring they are observed from another adult if possible, even if at a distance. Any physical contact with a child should always be as a response to the child initiating it.

I was confident, but I was overconfident. I had though that I would be able to take on the responsibility of taking care of my niece over the summer, but the truth had proved me wrong. In my imagination, taking care of a child meant providing him or her with basic needs such as food, shelter and playtime. It had never occurred to me that children are in need of love and care just as much as adults do. As I took on the role of being an aunt, I found myself to be completely lost as to how I should approach my five year old niece. I had never felt that way before. During those three months, I learned one very important lesson. Taking care of a child is time consuming and it is not as simple as a reward and punishment system. A child understands what is happening around them and reacts accordingly. A normal day for a daycare facility is to have many classrooms full of students like a typical public school; however, they are younger children and are being supervised by an adult. One way to keep things clean is to sanitize, in which is a big task of these workers. Children are always putting things in their mouth and then passing it off to other kids; therefore, sanitation is a big deal in these types of facilities. Another responsibility that daycare providers have are to enforce rules. When rules are broken, these providers are to then enforce discipline policies. These can sometimes become an issue seeing that these providers are not the parents of the children thus they have to consult with the parents on certain discipline techniques to use on specific children. On the other hand, these providers are similar to parents in the sense that they wash children's clothing and clean up after every child.
