Protectors of the people

Same thing week after week, get up Monday morning, put a tie on, get in the car, get stuck in traffic, get to my cubicle, work in a confined amount of space for 8 hours, then head back home. Why in the world would anyone want a job like this? These typical 9 to 5 jobs sound dreadful, and seem like they would wretch the last bit of life out of me on a daily basis. Maybe these jobs are made for most people, but not for this guy. I need the feeling of accomplishment, that what I am doing is helping people in need and the excitement that every day is a new day on the job. That is why I want to be a Police Officer that serves our cities, but most importantly be the protector of the people.

Police Officers are one of the most imperative jobs in our country. Police Officers enforce the laws of our society and without them; there would be utter chaos. In 1822 Sir Robert Peel, the founder of the British system of policing said, “The basic mission for which the police exist is to reduce crime and disorder” (Schmalleger 88). Police Officers main objective is to enforce the laws. They do so by pursuing and apprehending any individual who breaks the law or intent to do so. Police Officers do their job by warning, citing, or arresting any person who has committed a crime. Police Officers patrol their given jurisdiction and investigate any suspicious activities ("Police and Detectives"). As many people might think cops are basically crime fighters 24-7, they aren’t always arresting people, but they are always actively working to prevent and protect against crime. Findings indicate that about 10% to 20% of calls received to 911 actually need Police Officers to the scene (Schmalleger 88). That being said a great part o...

...e the necessary skills needed in becoming a Police Officer, but rather have obtained them through life lessons. You might be saying to yourself “Why on earth would he still be considering a career as a Police officer?” All I can say is being able to serve and protect my community is my motivation for this honorable service.

Bostrom, D.P.A of the Saint Paul Police Department in “Police Chief Magazine-The Professional Voice of Law Enforcement”.
