SPECIES- Ursus Maritimus, Polar Bear, lord of the Arctic. Lives in an area of five million square miles of snow and ice. From Siberia to Alaska and across Canada, Greenland and the Islands north of Norway, he is the master of all living things except man. It lives in the brutal cold, ice, and snow.
The temperature can plunge down frequently to -40 degrees and sometimes even lower but that does not bother the polar bear because of its color-less skin and layer of insulation fat. Its range extending around the northern polar region. Necessities of Life-The polar bear eats mostly seals which he has to hunt. His trick is to wait by a breathing in the ice and when a seal comes up by that breathing hole, he grabs it so fast it knocks it unconscious and then he eats it. Other pray is a walrus calf or a musk ox stuck in snow, birds, eggs, fish, and dead whales. And sometimes in the summer it eats berries and grass.
The polar bear has no water to drink so it only eats the skin and blubber, avoiding the meat. So by eating the blubber and leaving the meat the male bear is helping keep his body in balance with the surrounding environment. The bear would usually stay in a den or bury it self in the snow to avoid the suns ultra violent rays. Usually the pregnant female polar bear stays in the den.Food Chain-The polar bear finds its way on the top of its food chain. No predator on earth approaches the bear in size. The polar bear towers over everything else in his food chain.
The only thing that could stop him is a human with a gun.Super Amazing Facts-The polar bear is well adapted to its special live style. The hairs of its thick coat are hollow, giving extra insulation against the bitter arctic cold. It also has an extra layer of insulating fat under its skin and the hairs on the polar bear are color less, when the sun hits them they look white. Polar bears are twice as big as lions or tigers, a typical adult male weighs half a ton and is five feet high at the shoulder. His paws are a fool wide.
When he stands up straight, he can look an elephant in the eye.Explain- My species was endangered bad back in 1965 with no more than 5,000 left in the world.
Not many people know about the arctic wolf, it is the snowy white version of a wolf. They have a really big appite when it comes to eating. They most only eat one meal a day and eat up to 20 pounds in that one meal. They are mostly carnivores; they mainly eat big animals like the caribou and the musk ox so they can feed themselves and the whole pack (Arctic/Antarctic: The Arctic Wolf). People eat up to three meals a day, but wolves can go up to days with out eating a single thing (Arctic/Antarctic: The Arctic Wolf). When wolves are hunting they have to be able to have a plan to catch their food. Wolves would get all the pack members that are hunting to surround the animal, and pounces on them. One bit to the neck and the animal would be dead. When they are eating they will eat everything, like the meat, shin, fur and bone (Arctic/Antarctic: The Arctic Wolf). Also Arctic wolves can live up to 20 years in captivity, while they can only live 7- 15 years in the wild (Arctic/Antarctic: The Arctic Wolf). Arctic wolves are one of the most prettiest and unique types of wolf. When Arctic wolves are pups t...
Earlier this year on February 17, 2018, I volunteered at the annual Polar Bear run, which was put on by Franciscan City Way. The Polar Bear run is one of Indy’s oldest races, and this year was the 36th year of racing. I volunteered on a bitterly cold Saturday morning as a Course Marshall, which means I helped guide the runners and walkers to make sure everyone stayed on path. Luckily, I was near a corner where a cop had to block off the street, so she let me sit in her warm car until the racers appeared. I volunteered for this event as a part IUPUI’s Pre-Dental club. My ultimate career goal is to graduate from the IU School of Dentistry here on IUPUI’s campus and maybe even specialize in orthodontics. I fulfill my role as an active member of
The Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) has long been considered to be the symbol of the wild. They are beautiful, powerful and at the same time vulnerable animals. They are known to survive in remote areas not inhabited by humans. The Grizzly was once able to occupy most of the land from northern Mexico to Alaska and most places in between. With a disappearing natural habitat and one of the lowest reproduction rate of any mammal in North America the Grizzly bear has seen population number fall dramatically. Most Grizzly bears left in the continental United States are located in four states near Yellowstone National Park. Canada has Grizzly populations in five provinces. The state of Alaska has the largest population of these amazing animals. With change in habitat due to human involvement and low reproduction rates, Grizzly bears have had a hard time sustaining population numbers. This has caused them to virtually become non-existent in certain areas of North America and is forcing the bears that are left to move to more sufficient areas that can sustain their populations.
The winter will last 8 to 10 months followed by the short and much less cold summer. During the summer some lower areas of the Tundra will defrost at which point most of the flora and fauna will start to creep out of hiding. The few summer months are used by many animals such as the polar bear, to mate and to prepare for the once again oncoming winter. During the winter months, most everything remains frozen. Many of the animals migrate south for the winter whereas some stay behind or even group together for ritual group suicide (lemmings).
“When somebody pounds at your door in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada,” begins Arthur Unger’s 1982 article in The Christian Science Monitor, “you better not open it without checking on your uninvited caller. It might be a polar bear.” The article, titled “Polar bears are charming on a TV screen, less so in person” strikes a different tone than the 2013 anecdotal novel Wild Ones by Jon Mooallem. Mooallem’s stories, in conglomeration with a less-than-subtle critique of conservationists and American culture alike, provide a much different glimpse of the polar bear. Instead of vilifying the bears, Mooallem sensationalizes the bears’ struggle, pointing to their helplessness in the face of extinction (34-37). These two works, written over 30 years apart,
The next carnivore im gonna tell you about is the polar bear. The polar bear doesnt sleep during winter. Also, like the anglerfish it like to hunt other meat. The polar bear isnt the quickest runner so you can only amagine that it looses most of its food to faster pray.If the polar bear is lucky it gets a free meal every once in awhile becuase whales sre sometimes found on the ice.We think polar bears have been around from 70-100,000 years. They evolved from the brown bear.Their wieght can be from 550-1700 lbs. These bears need to eat around 4.4 lbs a day.Polar bears mostly are use to the cold tempatures but it can get to about -50 F* and polar bears are still HOT so they have to lay on their bellies to cool
They can be malicious or they can be passive, but Grizzly bears are normally solitary animals. Grizzly bears as big and ferocious as they are aren't very territorial and may be seen together eating where food is abundant, like in a stream where they can catch salmon. When a mother grizzly has her babies she tries to keep them away from other male grizzlies because they can be dangerous to the cubs and try to kill them. When they do venture close though the mother bear might fight back to protect her cubs, ( even considering the big size difference the males and females have). Grizzly bears will do pretty much everything to protect her cub against all of the dangers in this world, fighting back against everything that dares step close to her cubs. Well that’s all for this blog post see you next time on blog posters
There are many variant of bears in the bear’s family; starting from polar bear, grizzly bear, honey bear, black bear, panda bear, and many more. Each of them shares many similarities as well as differences. In this essay however, the writer will focused on classified the comparison and contrast between grizzly, and panda bear. From the taxonomy, the threat that both of them are facing, and also some of their behaviour, panda and grizzly share many things in common, but despite many similarities that they both share, there are also several things that distinguish both species such as foods, some of their behaviour
Polar bears (Ursusmaritimus) are classified as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean. Polar bears are the only marine mammal with powerful, large limbs and feet, allowing them to cover miles on foot and run on land. Besides, they are quite huge in size. All of these make them stand at the top of food chain. Wiig, Ø. Aars, J. & Born, E. W. (2008) mentioned, “Polar bears play an important role in the marine environment.”
Stranded in the middle of the ocean, two polar bears on top of an iceberg floating further and further from their home land; torn away from their family, these polar bears will most likely never make it back to their arctic home, doomed to die. The further they float away from the frigid waters; the iceberg melts at a greater and greater rate, leaving the poor innocent polar bears alone in the vast ocean, filled with predators waiting to have a yummy snack. Sure the polar bears can swim back to their homeland, but the journey is treacherous since they are so far out and face the danger of predators around every corner. The chance that they make it back is highly unlikely whereas the chance that they die is nearly evident.
There are many amazing creatures that have been on this earth. One of the most incredible features of this animal is the way the animal survives. The polar bear is an animal that can live in very cold temperatures, due to the features of the polar bears they are able to survive in these harsh environments. The polar bears also help us understand what might be happening in the arctic ecosystem. Polar bears help us gain an understanding of what is happening throughout the Arctic, as a polar bear at risk may signal something is wrong elsewhere in the arctic marine ecosystem.
When this happens it takes more little animals to feed a polar bear so they are just going around eating all the little animals messing up their population and another food chain. To conclude this is important for the public to know because it shows how humans are affecting the polar bears with global warming, raising awareness for the polar bears, and how the polar bears can mess up a lot of other population because it can't get the calories they
The world population of polar bears is currently dwindling and is currently 20,000-25,000 and is split between 19 sub-populations (Effects of climate change on polar bears, 2010). Brown bears are found in Russia, Scandinavia, Europe, North America and Asia. Americans use the term “grizzly” to refer to the smaller lighter coloured bear in the interior parts of North America, whereas “brown bear”, are generally thought off as the larger, darker variation living close to the coast and feeding on salmon (http://www.nwf.org/Wildlife/Wildlife-Library/Mammals/Grizzly-Bear.aspx, n.d.). Brown bears and polar bears are different species and therefore according to the biological species concept should not be able to produce viable fertile offspring. Polar bears have evolved from brown bears between 100,000 and 200,000 years ago (Reece,J, 2010), and can to some extent be looked upon as a white brown bear (Höflinger,L, 2012).
The Siberian tiger is a solitary animal, preferring to travel and hunt alone or with a small pack. This animal lives in mountainous regions and heavily forested areas.
Walrus’s adaptations to survive in the cold are their tusks, blubber, and eating two times a day, which keeps them alive. The walrus’s most important survival tools are their tusks. Walruses live in the Arctic Region. Walruses can live on ice floes for a long period of time. When walruses migrate they start at the Chuckcki Sea and end at the Bering Sea. Unlike birds, female walruses do not lay eggs they give live birth. Walrus’s average life span is forty years, unless humans or natural enemies hunt them.
