Recommended: Heian era poetry
Poetry had a very large role in narrative prose of the Heian period. During the Heian period poetry was a way that people showed their worth or status. Men and women would write poems to one another in order to attract the other and win their love. Poetry was mixed in with prose to add to the stories and display the overwhelming value of poetry in Japanese society. With the shift from poetry to prose, long tales and stories were able to be passed down in Japan helping to shape the Japanese culture. Two types of prose in particular that had major roles were nikki and monogatari.
During the Heian period, which lasted from 794 to 1195, government officials started to keep personal journals which they called nikki. These were not daily writings but rather they were later recollections of events so they contained further analysis of what had happened. The fact that it was not written every day is a plus and a minus on the nikki. On the down side the person keeping the journal might forget something that happened which would lead to them not being able to document an event or document it accurately. On the other hand, by waiting to document an event, the author is able to analyze the events that have happened completely and put a much deeper personal insight into what they feel about the event. The nikki is also very interesting in the fact that it can give the author a chance to sometimes see the consequences of certain actions or events fully play out and then give commentary on the entire situation. Along with waiting to write down the events, when writing a nikki, and author would usually use different writing styles such as third person or a narrative. This would give the nikki the feel of being a story or a work...

Nikki are good for being able to understand what certain individuals were thinking back in the Hein period but they are not as rich with Japanese folk lore as the monogatari are in my opinion. Although both are excellent resources for studying Japanese history, I get the feel that the flaw with both of them is the overall accuracy. Some nikki are written where the author takes on a different persona while many monogatari depict events that are fictional. They are great for getting a sense of the era and understanding the different writing styles but ate the same time are the most reliable of sources for history.

Nikki was born on December 11, 1958 in San Jose, California under the legal name of Frank Carlton Serafino Feranna Jr. He was mostly raised by a single mom and his grandparents after his father left the family. After being abandoned by his mom, Nikki was forced to permanently move in with his grandparents. They relocated many times, and because of this dysfunctional childhood he had, Nikki got himself into trouble. As a teenager living in Idaho, Nikki became a teenage vandal. He broke into people’s houses, shoplifted,

Heaney's first anthology Death of a Naturalist is the best source for poems that show how common and often mundane things are described in beautiful language and rediscovered as meaningful activities. "Digging", Blackberry-Picking" and "Personal Helicon" are prime examples of Kavanagh's words.
The Greek poet Hesiod wrote the poem Theogony circa 700 B.C., which depicted a theory to the earth’s conception. It portrays three generations of gods and how the Olympians came out victorious from the war against the Titans with Zeus as their leader. This founded the main belief system for the Ancient Greeks and was publicized through word of mouth. This polytheistic understanding to creation differs from that of the Old Testament. To this day, it is still unknown who authored Genesis, the first book of the Jewish Torah and the Christian Bible, but it was likely written by more than one person, particularly three writers: Jehovist or Yahwist, Elohist, and Priestly, also known as the “Authors of Genesis.” In this interpretation, there was a
As seen in examples of monogatari such as Tales of Ise or nikki with The Tosa Diary, poetry is a very much used tool in the writings. While other examples of the two writing styles use poetry, these two examples best demonstrate the breaks in the writing style that changes from a narrative and turns into something that takes on a more personal voice when it clearly goes into its poetic style. These poems are made to compliment the setting, such as in a poem credited to the former governor in The Tosa Diary where there is a description of the waves as they illustrate the governor’s sadness as he leaves Kyoto (83). Another point seen from this poem is that the governor is meant to be very good at constructing his poems and with it comes an example of a good poem as opposed to something that a commoner would have to write. Likewise, in the tenth of the Tales of Ise there are poems describing the love a man has for a woman while he is also comparing the physical setting, such as the mountains.
“All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.”
The male dominated society of the Heian and Tang periods led to the creation of biased ideals of men and women. Although the author of the Genji Monogatari, Murasaki Shikibu, was a woman, her perception of male and female ideals was also influenced by centuries of male dominated thought as conveyed through the vast amounts of Chinese culture which permeated the society she was a part of. Thus, one can read the Genji Monogatari as an example of gender ideals in Heian Japan as well its Chinese predecessor, the Tang dynasty.

Perhaps the most important function of the Tosa nikki was its role as an instruction manual of sorts. Of course, the diary was not formatted like any contemporary instruction manual that we would use in our time; the instructions were tucked away in constant examples that occurred throughout the writing. These examples showed people how to behave in ...
Twice in the Poetics, Aristotle contrasts poetry with history. Whatever its didactic value, the contrast has not seemed to readers of special philosophical interest. The aim of this paper is to show that this contrast is philosophically significant not just for our understanding of tragedy but also for the light it sheds on Aristotle’s overall methodology. I shall show how he uses the method sketched in the Topics to define tragedy and explain why the same method will not define history. In particular, tragedy admits of definition because its parts constitute a unity, and much of the Poetics aims to show how, despite being defined through six distinct parts, tragedy can be one. In contrast, history, though a proper preliminary to poetics and concerned also with human action, does not admit of scientific treatment because it contains no essential unities. Aristotle’s understanding of ‘science’ is used here to explain why any attempt to create a scientific history would turn history into poetry.

Do you remember when your sister used to write in her diary and how curious you were on finding out what she wrote in it? If you didn’t have a sister – do you remember keeping your own diary hoping that your mom would not find it one day and read it? At a young age, we all learn to keep a diary or journal. In elementary school, we may have been required to write in a journal in class replying to a question asked by the teacher like “How was your weekend?” or “How was your break?” Simple questions were asked to help generate ideas in our young minds and help us write our own story. But now that we are older, do we still have the opportunity to write our own story the same way we used to? Are we still able to release our emotions and reflect on events in our lives? Though many people see keeping a journal as childish or a waste of time, the effects of recording ones thoughts are beneficial.

In “The Colossus” Plath expresses how the lost of her father effected the father- daughter relationship growing up. Plath’s father who was “absent”, emotionally affected her in many ways. His neglect was responsible for why they never had that father-daughter relationship, which is critical in the developmental stages of a young girl growing up. Rietz writes:
