Have you ever wondered what kind of poetic devices are used in a poem? Have you ever wondered what kind of poetic devices are used in “The HighwayMan” if so let’s have a talk. The author uses a lot of poetic devices. He uses them really well and makes you really understand what is going on and he try’s make it easy for us to imagine. After I am done with this essay I want you to read the poem and ask yourself this. Can I identify all of the poetic devices that I wrote about and if so try to figure it out which ones I didn’t go over. So this is why this is a great and vivid story.
So in this poem they use quite a bit of similes. But a poem isn’t a poem without them and these are how they use them. One of the first similes they use is “Tim listened as dumb as a dog.” In this they compare Tim's hair to moldy hay so just think his hair is really gross. Ok so first let's talk imagery is an awesome thing. Imagery is a way that let’s us viewers imagine what the characters or scenes look like. Well let’s get started. Let’s start with one of the first lines that use imagery. This is the second line and I think it is a really good one. It is “The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon the seas.” This is really good imagery it helps you see how mysterious this scene is. One of the other good ones is “His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jeweled sky.” This one is good because it helps you see two things. I shows that the rapier is shiny and sparkles but it also shows that the sky is shiny and beautiful like it has a bunch of jewels in it. If you don’t like imagery you are crazy. Imagery is an amazing and wonderful thing that we have been lucky enough to grasp hold of and use in our writing. It is a gift that helps us in writing and makes poems and stories award
