The True Story of Pocahontas
When Pocahontas was about ten year old, the English colonists came to her area. She lived in Werowocomoco with her father, the Powhatan chief. In the Powhatan tribe, there was a clear division of children. Children were allowed to be barefoot and naked, and the adults were expected to be proper. The Powhatan nation was also a mix of six tribes; they had alliance with other tribes to keep each other safe. When the English arrived, the Powhatans attempted to build an alliance with them as well. Powhatan people were extremely kind to the English, and they supported them throughout the winter with food and such. The reason for their attempt of an alliance was because the Powhatans deeply disliked the Spanish. While
the Powhatans were trying to get the English support, the Quiakros of the tribe—Powhatan priests, were keeping a watchful eye on them. The Powhatans were an extremely connected tribe of a network of people. This is why they were aware of the Spanish, though they never came across one. The Chief had a liking to John Smith, and he wanted Smith to become a werowance of the English. Pocahontas’ father also offered to let the English reside on more habitable land than their previous. Unfortunately, shortly after their alliance John Smith broke the promise. Then, The English plotted to kill Smith but Captain Christopher Newport put a stop to the murder! John Smith has claimed that Pocahontas saved him, but the case would be false, because Pocahontas was not allowed at any of these rituals! This is the true story of Pocahontas, told by her ancestors.

The Historical Interaction Between the Europeans and Indians in the Disney Movie Pocahontas Over the past couple of weeks, we have been studying the story of the Native American (Indian) princess, Pocahontas. We have studied both literature and the 1995 Disney movie. I am going to write about what methods are used to portray the relationship between these two civilisations. Both media portray the same relationship between the civilisations; this is one of mistrust, misunderstanding and dislike. From the moment the Europeans landed in "the new world", the natives were not sure of what to think of them, they looked different, sounded different and carried themselves differently.
The book The Classic Slave Narratives is a collection of narratives that includes the historical enslavement experiences in the lives of the former slaves Harriet Jacobs, Frederick Douglass, and Olaudah Equiano. They all find ways to advocate for themselves to protect them from some of the horrors of slavery, such as sexual abuse, verbal abuse, imprisonment, beatings, torturing, killings and the nonexistence of civil rights as Americans or rights as human beings. Also, their keen wit and intelligence leads them to their freedom from slavery, and their fight for freedom and justice for all oppressed people.
As a young child many of us are raised to be familiar with the Pocahontas and John Smith story. Whether it was in a Disney movie or at a school play that one first learned of Jamestown, students want to believe that this romantic relationship really did occur. As one ages, one becomes aware of the dichotomy between fact and fiction. This is brilliantly explained in David A. Price's, Love and Hate in Jamestown. Price describes a more robust account of events that really did take place in the poorly run, miserable, yet evolving settlement of Jamestown, Virginia; and engulfs and edifies the story marketed by Disney and others for young audiences. Price reveals countless facts from original documents about the history of Jamestown and other fledgling colonies, John Smith, and Smith's relationship with Pocahontas. He develops a more compelling read than does the typical high school text book and writes intriguingly which propels the reader, to continue on to the successive chapters in the early history of Virginia.
Powhatan was the chief of a large Confederacy consisting of around thirty-two tribes living in the Virginia area. He was viewed as a strong and powerful leader who wants the best for his people. He explains that the reason for his speech is that he is near the end of his life and is concerned about their relationship when his successor takes place. Chief Powhatan wants peace between the English and the Powhatan people. “I exhort you to peaceable councils…” Willing to Chief uses the phrase “I wish their experience was equal to mine,” meaning he wants his children to have the same relationship with the colonists as his generation has enjoyed. Chief Powhatan states that Native Americans have the love for colonists, “not be less than ours to you”.
After their original leader, Bartholomew Goznold, dies, John Smith takes up his leadership position. Determined to survive and keep the colony going, he starts learning and observing the ways of the Indians. He tried to learn their language as well and tried to break the language barrier. He took a big gamble and came into the Indian camp to speak to chief Powhatan to bargain for food. Luckily for him, Powhatans daughter, Pocahontas, influenced her father to aid the Englishmen and John was able to secure food for the

A clear message through these captivity narratives is that European American culture was superior to Native American culture. In 1682 the first Native American Captivity Narrative was written by Mary Rowlandson titled “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration.”
The natives were weary of the English people but Powhatans decided to trust them and help them to establish a good relationship. Now the Powhatans knew how to grow and harvest crops and they were very good at agriculture. They were willing to give the English food in trade for goods, but this all changed when the English had raided the sacred temple and stole the offerings of food because they were starving. Now Powhatan was very disappointed and still wanted to have a good relationship with the outsiders so he wrote a letter to John Smith. The letter was Powhatan addressing that he is very shocked in after everything they did to help John Smith 's people that they would have the audacity to “come to destroy my Country, so much frightened all my people”, he was also referring to the fact that John Smith did come to talk about the raid to Powhatan but “ broke Powhatan political protocols by bringing an armed escort of Virginia soldiers.”
The General History of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles by John Smith, portrays the enormous troubles the settlers were faced with by the Native Americans. He explains how he was captured by Indians and also saved by a young Native American girl, Pocahontas. He vividly describes the ceremonies and rituals of the Natives performed before his execution. However, the execution never occurred due to the tremendous mercy showed by the king’s daughter who blanketed John Smith’s body her own. Pocahontas went on to persuade the Native Americans to help the settlers by giving them food and other necessities. Despite her efforts to reach peaceful grounds, her people were still bitter and planned an attacks on the colony. Nevertheless, Pocahontas saved them once again by warning the settlers of attacks. Pocahontas went on to marry an Englishman and traveled to England. She resembled the prosperity and good that was to be found in an untamed land.
Using the pseudonym Linda Brent, Harriet Jacobs wrote Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, to alert Northern white women to the dangers faced by enslaved African American women in the South. The narrative details her experience of slavery, emphasizing the sexual harassment she experienced working in the home of Dr. Flint (Dr. James Norcom).
Their disputes were ones of land use. The Puritans drew up treaties to buy the land off the American Indians, but since the belief was that the land was there for everyone to use, the Natives believed the treaties were only an agreement to share the land for a limited period of time. However, this was no the case for the Puritans, who saw the treaties as the American Indians permanently selling off their land. In Connecticut, the Pequot nation attempted to rebel against the Europeans. This war nearly destroyed the Pequot population. The end of the war happened in May of 1637, when English colonists and Native allies of the Narragansett tribe surrounded a fort and set it on fire. They also shot at the Pequot people who tried to escape the burning fort. Only a few out of the 600 people that were in the fort survived. Another rebellion against European expansion into American Indian territory came about with the chiefdom of Metacomet, or King Philip as the English called him. Chief Metacomet was the son of Massasoit of the Wampanoag tribe, who originally aided and interacted with the Puritans. However, as the English settlers gained their footing in New England, they began to seize land from the Wampanoag. The Puritans made the Natives work for them to earn a living, and the Wampanoag were also prohibited to hunt or fish on the Sabbath. Metacomet organized an alliance of
In her essay, “Loopholes of Resistance,” Michelle Burnham argues that “Aunt Marthy’s garret does not offer a retreat from the oppressive conditions of slavery – as, one might argue, the communal life in Aunt Marthy’s house does – so much as it enacts a repetition of them…[Thus] Harriet Jacobs escapes reigning discourses in structures only in the very process of affirming them” (289). In order to support this, one must first agree that Aunt Marthy’s house provides a retreat from slavery. I do not. Burnham seems to view the life inside Aunt Marthy’s house as one outside of and apart from slavery where family structure can exist, the mind can find some rest, comfort can be given, and a sense of peace and humanity can be achieved. In contrast, Burnham views the garret as a physical embodiment of the horrors of slavery, a place where family can only dream about being together, the mind is subjected to psychological warfare, comfort is non-existent, and only the fear and apprehension of inhumanity can be found. It is true that Aunt Marthy’s house paints and entirely different, much less severe, picture of slavery than that of the garret, but still, it is a picture of slavery differing only in that it temporarily masks the harsh realities of slavery whereas the garret openly portrays them. The garret’s close proximity to the house is symbolic of the ever-lurking presence of slavery and its power to break down and destroy families and lives until there is nothing left. Throughout her novel, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs presents these and several other structures that suggest a possible retreat from slavery, may appear from the outside to provide such a retreat, but ideally never can. Among these structures are religion, literacy, family, self, and freedom.
When the English landed in Jamestown in 1607, the dominant tribe of the area was the Powhatan (which the English settlers named after the leader of the tribe, Powhatan). At first meeting, the Powhatan considered the settlers as allies, who may be able to aid them in their struggle for land and power over the other tribes in the area. These relations strained when starving settlers started to take food from the Native Americans. In 1610, any notion of alliance between the Powhatan and the Virginia settlers was immediately crushed when Lord De La Warr arrived with a declaration of war against all Indians in the Jamestown area. De La Warr used his "Irish Tactics" of burning houses and crops and taking prisoners to destroy the Native Americans in what was known as the First Anglo-Powhatan war. A peace treaty was signed, but lasted only eight years. The Powhatan killed 347 settlers, which lead to the Virginia Company to give orders for "a perpetual war without peace or truce." Although the Powhatan made one more attempt at destroying the Virginians, they were defeated again in the Second Anglo-Powhatan war. The peace treaty of 1646 eliminated all chance of the Powhatan coexisting with the Virginia settlers. The treaty also banished the Indians from their native lands, which lay the president for what was later known as a reservation. After this the number of Native Americans in Virginia dwindled to a low 10% of the population.
