The current news item I choose to write about is “Gym teacher accused of assaulting student who wouldn’t stand for the Pledge of Allegiance” from The Washington Post. This article talks about the opposing sides of the kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance. In the article, a gym teacher was accused of assaulting a middle school student who refused to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. The police were called to the school, but no charges were filed and the teacher was placed on paid administrative. The Pledge of Allegiance is the American salute or patriotic vow people perform to the American flag. Therefore, it is supposed to represent our respect for America or our patriotism. Some will say, no it’s not unethical to kneel or sit during the Pledge of Allegiance. Kneeling or sitting during the Pledge of Allegiance became a non-violent way to protest police brutality and the senseless killings of unarmed black people. The origin of this protest came from the NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who sat during a football game in the summer of 2016, then started taking a knee. On the other hand, some will say that it is unethical to kneel or sit during the Pledge of Allegiance. It is unpatriotic and a disrespectful gesture towards the people who served and continue to serve in the military and America. This angered many people including President Donald Trump, and shows division in the United States Also, another argument is that it’s counterproductive way to protest, it takes away from the original message. People will start to care more about the flag than the message of oppressing against black people. Contract theory or Contractarianism is thinking about ethics in terms of agreement between people. Choice are moral if it agrees to the choices a normal society would chose. So, does the Contract theory supports kneeling during the pledge of Allegiance? The ethical theory Contract theory would not support kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance because in the hypnotical contract of America, not performing the Pledge of Allegiance goes against the agreement that performing the Pledge of Allegiance is a patriotic thing
