Schools typically justify their dress codes by maintain that it’s important to keep the classroom free of any distractions, however, that language actually reinforces the idea that women’s bodies are inherently tempting to men and it’s their responsibility to cover themselves up.
Dress codes have become a typical affair for public schools. The weight of this matter only gets heavier with time, as fashion trends evolve with haste. Accordingly, the debate for and against dress codes still stands. This essay will summarize, make an argument, and analyze Krystal Miller 's article "School Dress Codes."
On June 11, 2007, Delcambre Louisiana introduced the first ‘Pull Up Your Pants’ law in America to include a penalty of six months in jail or a $500.00 for weary pants sagging below the waist and revealing a person’s buttocks covered only by an undergarment (Koppel, 2007). This public indecency campaign, directed primarily at African American youth, continues to show intolerance and contempt for this social faction 's form of fashion and cultural expression of low-slung pants. However, Laurel’s city attorney Deidra Bassi of Laurel Mississippi’s 2015 Pull Up Your Pants campaign is concerned this could be perceived and challenged as a violation of civil rights (Howell, K. 2015).

The belief that public schools should enforce strict dress codes has been the topic of many controversial and heated debates throughout history. Although it is uncommon for public schools to require uniforms, every school has some type of dress code. Elizabeth Forward High School in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, is no different than the rest of the nation. When caught violating the dress code, some teachers will choose to ignore it, whereas others will send the student to the high school office. If sent to the office, students are penalized with a day of in-school suspension instead of being allowed to call for a change of clothes. At first glance, the prohibition of tank tops, jeans with holes above the knee, and shorts and skirts shorter than fingertip length, among many other guidelines, seems reasonable, but after further reconsideration, it is clear that the dress code at Elizabeth Forward High School is ridiculous and hypocritical. I think that Elizabeth Forward High School should lift the harsh policies because of the temperature fluctuation in the building throughout the school year, recent trends among teens, and the hypocrisy associated with the dress code.
Those are my reasons on how our dress code needs to be changed. The specific codes that need changed are shorts, tank tops, and the talk of banning leggings and yoga pants. I know each of these thing could distract boys but so could any other

In all parts of the world and throughout history the topic of a woman’s dress has been an issue. In the United States alone 1.3 million women have revealed having been raped or sexually assaulted in their life time while only 84 thousand rape cases were reported to the authorities. This means that a woman in the United States has a 1 in 5 chance of being sexually assaulted with the height of the danger being between the ages of 16 and 19 years old. Though this is not only an issue that effects the women of this country only three percent of men have admitted to having been sexually assaulted compared to the much larger percentage of women suffering from these kind of advances. This issue behind this subject is that women are often blamed for attacks that happen to them because of the manner in which they dress. Some of the first questions ask of a woman by investigators in what she was wearing that to time of the assault. The general attitude is that the woman was “asking for it.” and thus were given what they deserved. In many homes and religious institutions the topic of a woman’s modesty is presented while she is still a girl. She is often taught to clothe herself in such a way as to not arouse the lust of a man and that it is their duty to keep the thoughts of a male or any other individual clean. To this view point there is much objection as many women believe they should not be held responsible for the actions or thoughts of another being. Don’t you just hate it when you’re simply shopping at the grocery store, but then you see someone’s shoulder? That shoulder is SO distracting that you can’t chose the best jar of pickles for your hamburgers. You’ve definitely never seen a shoulder before. Oh wait, that has never happened to you, has it? This is why I don’t understand why girls at school are restricted to wearing certain shirts. Girls should be allowed to wear tank tops at school. Disallowing girls to wear shirts that exposes a girls shoulder makes men think they should sexualize women just because they see shoulder, adds to the issue of sexism, and punishes girls and distracts them from their education.
