Now arriving upon a confident answer to what you are best suited for is challenging for many people. Which is why I believe the government should aid in helping people to find their true meaning in life. Back in middle school, I read a book called The Giver, and while most of the book I disagreed with, one part of the dystopian world in the society in the book stuck with me. In The Giver, children are observed by the government in terms of their characteristics, by aptitudes, and multiple other areas. What they government then does, is that when the children become a certain age, they place the child with a career that is best suited for them, based on everything observed. Well, like Plato, again, I favor the concept of having a philosopher-king has a ruler. Like Plato describes, a philosopher-king will be best able to make decisions for the people, without outside influence get in the way of making them. When leaders become too caught up in trying to make everyone happy, I believe they lose their power to truly be effect at doing what is best for the whole. It is not the job of the ruler to impose his own beliefs upon his people, but rather do his best to maintain the best quality of life the states can give to its people. Multiple people with potential should be chosen, as prescribed in my system of aiding children to find their best suited job, and then from that pool only the best can be chosen to be the philosopher-king. The rest, shall be placed on a position on the court, for you would also want a person who is unbiased to give the best verdict over a case. Another court power, is that they will serve as a check over the philosopher-king to make sure the philosopher-kings stays true to his impartiality when making decisions, and retain the ability to make the best decision for all. Also, in this system that court will be the ones, being an uninfluenced body, to place children in their best career. Throughout this course I have developed my political philosophy to be stronger, by heeding examples from the great philosophers we have discussed, however I have yet to fully peace all of it together in a flowing coherent text quite yet. I do know one thing however, and that it to remain open. While I realize that some of my ideas are radical, over my experiences and how I clicked with the political thinkers words, this is what I have created as my own political philosophy as of now. Given the current world today this is where I stand. Something may happen tomorrow and make me realize how wrong or right I have been, but for now this is me, as radical and all over the place it is. I can only hope that my logic makes an inkling of sense. To keep on track, the philosophers we have studied this semester deserve respect in their own light. Each one of them is right, and I feel like none of them are necessarily wrong. The world is a different place to every person, and for that reason I personally do not believe that we will ever have a political system with which everyone agrees with. We can merely do the best we can to grow, and take into considerations the words of those who have come before us, and maybe one day, we will arrive upon a system of government worth waiting
In The Giver, a narrative by Lois Lowry, Jonas’s father illustrates his feelings during his Ceremony of Twelve and Jonas tells about his own feelings concerning the forthcoming event. In the text it states, “‘But to be honest, Jonas,’ his father said, ‘for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be,’”(Lowry, paragraph 3). This segment of text elucidates the reason of Jonas’s father’s lack of surprise of his Assignment. Living in a perfect world is like living in an anthill. An ant does not think on it’s own, make it’s own decisions, and doesn't really have any own identity, just like the utopians. It is not worth living in a perfect world. The utopian society we are introduced to in the book, The Giver, has many different characteristics that make the perfect life unbearable. Examples of these things are The Receiver, the community, and the chief elders.
From the time a child enters preschool, teachers begin asking a common question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” That dreaded query has always haunted me, mostly because the way it was redundantly asked put a ton of pressure on me and my peers. The question was like a rusty nail being hammered into our head’s by society. I continuously had the cliché answers of becoming a doctor, teacher, or a police officer, but with serious reservations. After years of not having a clue, I started to think about what I like to do after the stresses of work and school were gone at the end of the day.
What determines a society to be either a utopia or a dystopia? Would it be everyone following the rules? In the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry, a new “Utopian” culture blossoms from the previously failed society. The Giver’s nation starts out with the intention of creating a utopian society; however, the strict limitations turn it into a dystopia where there are receivers, like Jonas, that hold the good and bad memories from the past culture. Jonas will experience great pain and great joy through his job as the Receiver instead of the whole community sharing the burden. The Giver’s world is a dystopia because of the following three reasons: they kill people that disobey the rules, they do not get to pick their own jobs, and, above all, they beat children if they do not use precise language.
Think about a community where you can’t marry someone of your choice, you can’t choose your own job, and you can’t have your own kids. This sounds like a unbearable place to live, but there is one like this and it’s in the book The Giver by Lowis Lowry. This type of community would be considered a dystopia, even though some of the citizens think it is a utopia because they don’t need to worry about a lot of regular-to us - things in their lives. The people of the controlled community in The Giver get harsh punishments for small errors, the citizens don’t get to experience any emotions, and they kill or release innocent newchildren.
Although not any philosopher can be a ruler, it is only through extensive education of the arts and logic can they have what Euripides would refer to as ‘proper judgment’. While these rulers would have extensive knowledge on arts and logic, they would not have learned anything about the interests of the Athenian citizens. The philosopher-rulers would be an elite minority group that has lived a different life from the rest of the citizens, therefore they would have no knowledge of the issues and interests of the population they would be representing. In Plato’s ideal state, he places someone he deems fit to rule, and the state becomes authoritarian. The ruler becomes a benevolent dictator, while the citizens have no rights, only duties. Throughout history, people had made numerous futile attempts to create an Utopian society. The term "Utopia" depicts on an imaginary ideal state. Such a state is describe in The Giver. In The Giver, Jonas's community believes in the renunciation of personal properties, rights, one's unique characteristics and of binding personal relationships (such as marriage). This society is believed to be perfect, free of pain and sorrow; everything is under control and "same". This serene society greatly contradict with the one we live in. Our society is furnished with hatred and warfare, yet in return, we are given freedom and the privilege of having distinctive characters. Given the nature of human beings, our society is more idealistic to live in.
The book The Giver is a Dystopia because the people in their community have no choices, release and because the people don't know or understand what life is. The world in the beginning of the book seems like a utopia because how smoothly it runs but it actually is a dystopia because no world or place ever is perfect. This place or the givers world still has many flaws.
In The Republic by Plato, Plato constructed an ideal city where Philosophers would rule. Governed by an aristocratic form of government, it took away some of the most basic rights a normal citizen should deserve, freedom of choice, worship, and assembly were distressed. Though the idea of philosopher kings is good on paper, fundamental flaws of the human kind even described by Plato himself prevent it from being truly successful. The idea of an ideal democratic government like what our founding fathers had envisioned is the most successful and best political form which will ensure individual freedom and keep power struggle to a minimum.
Louis Lowry’s The Giver uses a dystopian society as a metaphor to show how one lives without pain and lacks knowledge of other places in order to give the reader a warring that society will never be perfect. “The Giver offers experiences that enhance readers levels of inquiry and reflection.” (Friedman & Cataldo pp102-112) At First glance the novel's setting seems to be a utopia, where all possible steps are taken to eliminate pain and anguish. Often the difference between a Utopia and a Dystopia is the author’s point of view. The difference between dystopia society and a utopian society is that a “dystopia is a world that should be perfect but ends up being horrible. Imagine dystopia as a world where the government gives everything to everyone for free. You would think it would be perfect, but imagine if that government oppressed everyone. Essentially a Dystopia is a utopia that has been corrupted.” (Levitas p1) A dystopian society is “Any society considered to be a undesirable, for any number of reasons. The term was coined as a converse to a Utopia, and is most used to refer to a fictional (often near-future) society where social trends are taken to a nightmarish extreme. Dystopias are frequently frequently written as warnings, or satires, showing current trends extrapolated to a nightmarish conclusion. A dystopia is all too closely connected to current day society.” As defined in The Giver (Telgan pp162-182). This is why I believe that Lowery is giving the reader a warring about how our world is changing. We have the power to stop it before it happens if we listen to warring signs and act accordingly. If we don’t listen to those signs our society will become a nightmarish environment, to live in. “ The Giver demonstrates how conflict can force us to examine our most important beliefs about what is right and true. Conflicts can change our worldly view of thing.” (Freidmane & Catadlo pp102-112)
If I had a nickel for everytime an adult asked me what I wanted to do for the rest of my life; needless to say I would not be worried about a thing. Teens tend to get easily frustrated with this question, but we never realize the importance of it. The truth is, we too ask ourselves this question and for whatever reason, maybe it's our youth or our short attention spans, we can not even give ourselves an answer. A couple years ago, I was this such teen. I was backed into a corner; my grandparents had just asked me this infamous question. For once, I actually thought about it and I spouted out, "Well, Pop Pop... Mamaw, I am going to be a poltician." I was the cause for many "jaw-droppings" that day, but I felt too excited to worry with that. I finally knew what I wanted to be, and oh, how I wanted to be a poltician so badly. For a teen, I guess it is rather odd that I chose this career, but there are many reasons that transformed a twelve year old, who still stubbornly believed in leprechauns, into the passionate young woman, whom I know today.
Plato’s view of division of labour is divided into three types of peoples’ task in life which are workers as farmers, military type and guardians. Actually, the ruling task of Plato’s Republic is the guardian’s responsible who had achieved the greatest wisdom or knowledge of good. Due to that, Plato claims that “philosopher must become kings or those now who called kings must genuinely and adequately philosophise’’ (Nussbaum1998, p.18). However, people argue about the reasons that the philosopher should rule the city, while the philosophers prefer to gain knowledge instead of power, thus they don’t seek this authority. Therefore, the argument should alter to why the philosophers are the best ruler to govern people. Indeed, Plato states much evidence to prove his view. Firstly, these kinds of kings are interested in simple life and helping people for better communication. Secondly, as Plato points out that each type of workers has a deficiency and conflict in his erotic attachments such as a worker is a lover of money, but the philosopher is a devotee of wisdom and knowledge. Thirdly, their disapproving of being a king comes from their fear of being unjust (Nussbaum, 1998).Not only these evidence does Plato claim, but he also adds the characteristics of being a king and the education system of philosophy.

Political Philosophy is typically a study of a wide range of topics such as, justice, liberty, equality, rights, law, politics and the application of a codified law. Depending on what the philosophy is, it usually tends to be a very sensitive and a personal ideology that an individual holds within the reality of their existence. Several of the fundamental topics of political philosophy shape up the society that we live in as these specific topics and their implementation by the state ensures a legitimate government. In Political Philosophy, the aforesaid concepts or topics are evaluated and analyzed with tremendous depth in context to their history and intent. Furthermore, in a rather colloquial sense, political philosophy is generally a point of view which after some deep thinking asks questions such as, what are the government’s duties? Is it legitimate? What makes it legitimate? What are the duties of its citizens? What are their rights? Are they protected? So on and so forth. In the following paper, I will canvass my political philosophy and elaborate on my reasoning behind it.
