This case study seeks to explore the ways Planned Parenthood, a non-profit reproductive healthcare organization, utilizes its social media and “hashtag activism” to mobilize its supporters on the political front and in turn generate donations in the wake of the Trump Administration’s threats to “defund” the organization. More specifically, however, this case study will analyze Planned Parenthood’s recent hashtag campaign that took place on March 29th, #PinkOut, and will further evaluate Planned Parenthood’s social media management on their Facebook and Twitter pages. As evidenced through the organization’s successful renewal of the #PinkOut campaign, Planned Parenthood’s social media platforms exemplify how non-profits can utilize social media and the trend of hashtag activism to successfully spread awareness and encourage engagement from their supporters that result in action. With nearly 650 affiliated health centres across the U.S., Planned Parenthood offers vital services such as cancer screenings, abortions, STD diagnosis and treatment, sexual education, contraception, and much more (“About Us”). As a result, the organization plays a large role in the reproductive health and rights movement (and in turn the gender equality movement) stating on their website that they “were founded on the revolutionary idea that women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams – no ceilings, no limits” (“About
There is a common misconception that Planned Parenthood is a center for abortions, and that is it. The truth is, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services relate to abortions. Planned Parenthood receives $500 million in federal funding and it is illegal to spend any of that money on abortion services. In CNN ’s article, "Planned Parenthood, by the Numbers”, there are clear statistics about how Planned Parenthood manages the money they receive and how a majority of their work focuses on
Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that is government funded and offers free health care, sex education, and family planning to millions of women all over the country. (“Who We Are”) The organization was founded by Margaret Sanger in the 1960’s. Her mission was to provide free health care to women all across the nation despite their race, ethnic background, income, etc. She also vowed to educate and care for women’s sexual health while maintaining their privacy. As of late, Planned Parenthood has been a target of controversy, with a possibility of being defunded. Why or why not should the government continue to fund this organization?
Noting that one thing is clear and that Planned Parenthood top priority is not the wellbeing of women. Behind this organization there are facts that they don’t want Americans to know which shows a whole different view of Planned Parenthood, like how there is a high abortion rate which the tax dollars generate and goes to the clinics revenue and also that this is a criminal organization. Conservatives argue that selling unborn baby parts for profit is a crime and can result is imprisonment. But the conservatives see that there should be a stop to funding Planned Parenthood, so now Congress has the chance to end government financing for Planned Parenthood. A voice of
Advertisements about birth control pills and abortion clinics are never seen on television or even on billboards, but somehow people discover ways of acquiring birth control pills and finding abortion clinics. In a country where we can acquire certain items for free we tend to not think about who supplies or pay’s for these items. In every single state of the United States, birth control pills and abortion clinics can be found just around the corner. Based on “Pro Life Actions,” there are approximately 750 abortion clinics all over the United States. Also, with the help of “Planned Parent Hood,” bir...
The Information gathered in 2012 from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies concluded that cervical cancer, “... used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States” (“Cervical Cancer Statistics”). But these statistics have gone down significantly in the past forty years because Planned Parenthood facilities provide to women pap smears to detect cell changes before the cancer develops. On the other hand, Planned Parenthood does not directly provide mammograms for women, their doctors and nurses “... teach patients about breast care, [and] connect patients to resources to help them get mammograms” ("Breast Cancer Screenings"). The important health care work done by the Planned Parenthood Clinics is, at times, over sought and even forgotten when the organization is embroiled in controversy as it finds itself in
Planned Parenthood federation of America (PPFA), is widely known as Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that provides reproductive healthcare and family planning services. Planned Parenthood is the nation 's leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate (Planned). Planned Parenthood receives federal funding from the government to help practice the services they provide, but some groups believe that funding this organization is morally wrong. Specifically, in the recent Republican Presidential debates, defunding Planned Parenthood and Abortion rights have been the central topic. However if the government were to move forward with the defunding
Planned Parenthood provides much important health care to women in the United States. Therefore the Government (State and Federal) should continue to fund the organization. PPFA (Planned Parenthood Federation of America) provides a high variety of service at affordable pricing to women, men, and teenagers. Planned Parenthood has been categorized by some government representatives as an organization that misspend funds as well as some religious systems that oppose abortion. PPFA have also supply communities with guidance, health services, abortion services as well as referrals for adoption.
Healthcare comes at a costly price, and many citizens in the US find themselves barely scraping by on their low-income earnings. So, they can’t always afford the necessary insurance to keep themselves and their families healthy. To help the underprivileged, “Planned Parenthood participates in a [federally] funding program called Title X… [This allows them to supply women] birth control, gynecological care, and other reproductive health services for women who cannot pay full price for health care services” (About Our Fees: Central and Western NY). This program does not pay for abortion, so in turn, abortion is their main revenue generator. Planned Parenthood is not just for women, though. They provide sexual and reproductive health care, education, information, and outreach to more than 5 million women, men, and adolescents worldwide each year. Getting the information out has two basic goals: 1. To let those who are underprivileged know there are options for them and 2. To lessen the need for these services, such as abortions and STD care, by educating those on the prevention of such necessities. Planned Parenthood does not just do this on their own; they correspond with many other affiliates to provide these educational programs and outreach to adolescents and
Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers “vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide” (Planned Parenthood). The funding that the Trump Administration took away from did not stop them from their cause. Planned Parenthood is the number one organization that supports this topic, partnering with them will help me propose my claim. “ Whether talking with members of Congress, parents, or faith leaders, or arguing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, we fight for commonsense policies that promote women's health, allow individuals to prevent unintended pregnancies through access to affordable contraception, and protect the health of young people by providing them with comprehensive sex education ” (Planned Parenthood). Getting a lot of supporters for this issue of convincing pro-life that they are wrong with the evidence-based material will provide many more
Planned parenthood is funded for the low income families who need health care. If politicians “defund” Planned Parenthood and have their way, they will block millions of patients who depend on Medicaid and other public health care programs from accessing care at Planned Parenthood health centers. They also want to shut down the planned parenthood centers. If that were to happen, it would cause a national health care disaster. Many Planned Parenthood patients, nearly half who are people of color and who live in rural areas, would have nowhere else to turn for health care. Per year, Planned Parenthood health centers provide birth control for 2 million people,
Interest Groups There are hundreds of interest groups in the state of Texas. As stated in our textbook, “An interest group is composed of people who share a common set of ideas or principles and who attempt to advance those ideas or principles by influencing public-policy makers” (Benson, Clinkscale, & Giardino, 2014). They all have different approaches to get their point across from public advertisement like TV commercials and billboards to marching to the capitol.
The other 97 percent of services were for contraception, treatment, and tests for sexually transmitted diseases, cancer screenings, and other women’s health services(Annual report).” Another argument is, a person should be accountable for their own actions.Taxpayers should not have to provide, instead, it should be a non profit organization funded solely by donors. However, if not giving the necessary resources this problem forces the parent to accept the child. Leaving the child under the care of unwanted parents. The parent could either abandon the child or the child can grow up under the adoption/foster care system where can they lead a potential crime life. Another would claim defunding” Planned Parenthood will save money of the country.“The government saves $7 in Medicaid-related costs for every dollar invested in publicly funded family planning programs like Title X(How federal funding
As a self declared feminist, Bernie Sanders fights alongside nonprofits for the reproductive rights of women nationwide. One champion of this continuing cause is the controversial Planned Parenthood. While some might take objection to the non-profit organization—based on biased preconceptions and fabricated statistics—Planned Parenthood provides a vast range of services far beyond abortions. In fact, between 2012 and 2013, abortions made up a meager 3% of Planned Parenthood’s total operations, the majority of which consisted of STI and STD testing (42%), contraceptives (34%), cancer screenings (9%) and other necessary prenatal operations (11%) (“Our Health. Our Decisions. Our Moment.”). Contrasting against the other candidates who promise to dismantle or defund the nonprofit, Bernie Sanders has announced his plans to expand their budget. As the only candidate with a lifetime of pro-choice voting, the senator firmly believes that “the decision about abortion must remain a decision for the woman and her doctor to make, not the government” (quoted in Sanders). Furthermore, Sanders believes that access to reproductive treatment is vital to our society, and that we “[can not] [return] to the days of backroom abortions, when countless women were maimed or died” or when coat-hanger abortions killed hundreds of thousands of women every year. In
In America, one million teenagers get pregnant every year (National Abortion Federation, 2003). Of these pregnancies, 78% are unplanned because these teenagers start having sex at a very young age and are unaware of ways to prevent pregnancies. Thirty five percent of the pregnant teenagers chose to abort, as they fear that the consequences of the pregnancy might cause significant effects to their lives. The problems that come with teenage pregnancies include dropping out of school, receiving inadequate prenatal care, developing health problems, relying on public assistance to raise a child, and probably divorcing their partners. In most states, the law allows pregnant teenagers to take their babies for adoption without consulting their parents. The same laws allow the teenagers to have an abortion but require parental notification or consent before carrying out the procedure. These laws prove biased as they favor one resolution over the other, as they force some to bear babies they do not want by restricting their options.
In order to use social media to promote your advocacy, online activist need to know the effects social media has on activism. The first effect of communication is audience engagement is needed. Many of the issues that went viral like the ALS ice bucket challenge had some sort of audience appeal. The supporters were doing an action and challenging their friends to do it also. By doing that, it was raising awareness and gaining donations. On the word of an article about the ice bucket challenge stated, its playing on what you know young people do, and you are using that to create this awareness and raise money (Madison). This generation is always trying to outdo themselves, who is going to be the next big youtube sensation. The winners of this knowledge monopoly is all the groups whose activism worked and got recognition. The losers are the advocates whose issues got "liked" by slacktivist, maybe someone shared a post but it did not go viral. Secondly, putting activism on social media is a given, it is a place where the supporters are already at. In an article in Psychology Today, Pamela Rutledge, PH.D. says social media is changing public awareness by the word of mouth persuasion (Rutledge). Social media users often connect to those who have their same views, finding supporters of an issue or cause on social media should amplify the advocacy. For example, according to the article in the Sentinel, since the ice bucket challenge went viral, the ALS Association has seen more than one million new donors and received more than 80 million dollars in donations as of August 2014 (Madison). Even though the ALS ice bucket challenge was a success and proves activism on social media can work it can set up some advocates for failure. The unexpected consequences of the effects on social media activism is that people are thinking that they can do the next ice
