Plagiarism, what is it and how to avoid it has been a major question on every students’ mind. Of course it is pretty easy to simply just copy and paste, but do we really know what that means? The words “copy and paste” are an exact definition on what plagiarism is. It is basically the taking of someone’s work, pasting it, and taking all the credit that should initially go towards the author or publisher. I personally despise this filthy act of profound immorality, and injustice, but several students around the nation are participating in this unlawful act. These people simply had a choice, made the wrong choice, and expect to get away with the fact that they had cheated. As stated in source A, “Forget passing handwritten notes underneath desks or inking your arm with essential math formulas before a killer test. If students today want to cheat, they have a more insidious tool at their despoil: Cell phones. More than one third of teens with cell phones admit to having stored information on them to look at during a test or texting friends about answers, a new survey finds.” This basically tells us there is a new way of cheating because it proves that there are too many incidents of plagiarism and cheating, but most of all it tells us that the source of cheating in the classroom is the use of cell phones. If parents take away cell phones, or if the school bans the use of technology in the building, the rate of cheating on tests would automatically drop. Plagiarism is the act of taking other people 's work and ideas without giving them credit. This can include any form of cheating. Scott Jaschik discusses various situations of plagiarism in college in his article, “Winning Hearts and Minds in War on Plagiarism,” in order to argue that there are more efficient solutions to prevent plagiarism. Having his article published in an online news source, Inside Higher Ed, allows for Jaschik to have an audience of first year English and college instructors interested in learning about higher education. Jaschik writes in general to an audience who is interested in academic integrity and those who want to either stop or learn more about plagiarism. Jaschik employs various situations such as an online student discussion board and an assignment to purposely plagiarize in order to highlight common issues with why students plagiarize.
A person’s ethics can be seen in their everyday life. Ethics are the morals someone lives their life by. Merriam-Webster defines ethic as “rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad.” The ethics that someone shows helps describe their personal character and refer to the way that person acts in personal and socials relationships.
Plagiarism is stealing, cheating and just plain wrong. When you think of plagiarism, you probably just think of someone copying and pasting information from the Internet. But did you know that people can also plagiarize songs and not just information from the internet? Take Justin Bieber for example. He was sued back in 2013 for $10 million for copyright infringement. He supposedly stole lyrics from "two Virginia songwriters who claim that Bieber's song "Somebody to Love" contains numerous lyrical and stylistic similarities to the song they wrote in 2008 by the same name." Is it educators who should be blamed for the huge number of students paying for everything from one page responses to their professors to complete thesis dissertations. Is it the lazy or incapable students fault? Aren’t the “Papermill” companies that supply the resources that actually complete the work the ones to blame? I think it's fairly obvious that this kind of business is unethical. . I would never think about paying someone to write a paper for me, because then I would be cheating myself out of my own education. While we are pointing fingers, maybe the blame should be on the parents of the students for not teaching them any morals and letting them think that cheating is acceptable.
Plagiarism; noun, the practice of taking someone else's work and passing it off as one's own. (Merriam-Webster) When viewed simply as a definition in a dictionary plagiarism seems very black and white. However, is this really the case? Is it so easy to look at something and say with one hundred percent certainty that it is or is not completely original? Certainly as time goes on less and less things can be truly original as the chances of someone else having the same idea increases exponentially. Why are some things that adhere to the very definition above still not considered plagiarism? Is plagiarism truly a book definition or is it really a matter of perception?
Plagiarism, conventionally defined as literary theft, is the stealing and replication of the original ideas of another person without requesting for consent or crediting the author of a recorded or authored work (Heath 4). It may take several forms, for example, presenting an idea as original even though it has been derived from an existing source, or even neglecting to put quotation marks when quoting a sentence from borrowed work. In as much as plagiarism is widely regarded as a bad practice, it is at times committed unintentionally. As a result, there is an anti-plagiarism policy in several academic institutions and heavy penalties are imposed on individuals involved in plagiarism.
As students of high school and college, and even in the professional world, we are asked to research and write on subjects that are seen to be important. The research that we are asked to do, has been done many times in the past, which means people are bound to use others’ ideas and words with no recognition, sometimes without even knowing it. This leads to plagiarism, which is something many people have heard of, but never learned the true definition and the harm it can create. Schools and society need to be more proactive in explaining what plagiarism is, how to write correctly in order to prevent it, and teach the consequences plagiarism has.

Plagiarism is a serious offense and a growing trend in our society today. Some may associate plagiarism with the idea of taking someone else’s writing and making it their own. In fact plagiarism involves anything that is copied or taken and said to be of your own work. Dictionary.com defines plagiarism as “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work, as by not crediting the author”. In fact this definition covers all types of cheating and misrepresentation of ones own work. There are many numbers and statistics that can be found on the amount of individuals that have admitted to cheating. Perhaps the most astounding number is one that was reported by Moeck in 2002 aloft of 40% of higher education students commit academic dishonesty. This number I’m sure has grown since this report and will continue to grow with the development of the Internet. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
