Introduction As technology has advanced in our society, students and employees alike have been experiencing the effects of plagiarism. With the internet so easily accessible these days, it has become much less difficult to steal someone else’s work and present it as your own. Students especially have taken advantage of the availability of technology and used it to commit acts of plagiarism. Very few people benefit from it, however. These are the negative outcomes that result from plagiarism. Difficulty Thinking Creatively The convenience of being able to select ‘copy’ and ‘paste’ on online documents has led to a sort of laziness among students, which is taking a toll on their eagerness to think creatively. Despite the fact that plagiarism is banned in both college and university, it has not stopped students from attempting it. In a study of 71,300 undergraduate students conducted by Dr. Donald McCabe and the International Center for Academic Integrity, they found that 62% of students admitted to cheating on written assignments. This is problematic because plagiarising in university almost always results in failure or expulsion. Professors might either fail the student in the class or go as far as having them expelled from the school, as most universities do not tolerate any form of plagiarism. In the first place, writing at any level is a challenge. It is a process that requires active thinking as well as creativity. Equally important, is the drive to understand what is necessary to inform the reader when using someone else’s work. In his findings, Gabriel begins with examples of students that committed plagiarism in colleges both unknowingly and intentionally. Dudley offered about students unwilling to engage in the writing process. He states, “... it was students who intentionally copied ― knowing it was wrong ― who were “unwilling to engage the writing process.” I agree with this because more often than not, when students are not excited to write, they would plagiarize to get by. They would aim for the bare minimum to pass and never over because they are not interested in what they are being taught. In addition, they don’t understand the purpose of what they are doing and when that happens, they don’t put the effort into what they are doing. They just know that they have to do it for a grade, but a grade does not mean anything if it wasn’t done by the student. For example, in my middle school, where many students are concerned about just passing rather than actually doing the work to get there, they would plagiarize. These are the same students “unwilling to engage in the writing process.” Students would share their work through google docs to other students in the hope that they can get ideas. But rather than using one student’s work for ideas, the other student would copy and paste it to their own until the teacher catches them.

The people who plagiarize intentionally are people who don’t really care about their future and career. The people who plagiarize unintentionally are people who do not cite their work properly and completely. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
