Placerville California is located near Sacramento. This gold rush town was named after deposits of placer gold that was found in the river beds in the 1840’s. Being so close to where gold was first discovered in 1849 many people came flocking to this city in hopes of finding their fortune. It is located only 10 miles from the city that gold was first found in. The placer gold deposits the town got its name from were found in the river between Spanish Ravine and the town plaza. With all the miners rushing to the area Placerville soon became a much needed supply hub during the gold rush. Placerville also had another name in the early days which was “Hangtown”. One of the most famous stories on how the town got this name is a gambler named Lopez brought to attention that he was winning in a local saloon. When Lopez started home, some men came and tried to rob him. Lopez fought back and with some help form bystanders and the robbers were captured. These men who attacked Lopez were also wanted for a murder and robbery that happened at a gold camp on the Stanislaus River. After a short trial the men were found guilty the crowd was said to have called out, "Hang 'em! Hang 'em!" Contrary to the name only a small number of people were actually hanged in Hangtown and in 1850, was renamed. Many famous business people had business on Placerville’s Main Street like Phillip Armour the meat packer who left upstate New York at the age of 19. He like so many others was headed to California for the gold rush. By age 24 Phillip Armour had made $8,000. Mark Hopkins also from New York was a book keeper when he heard about California’s gold he became a railroad financier who did business in Placerville. The Central Pacific railroad made Hopkins very w... ... middle of paper ... ...ossed it therefore establishing the first toll bridge in the county. Placerville played its roll in California’s history like many other gold rush towns. It was a supply station for many minors and at one point was one of the third largest cities in California. Many people came to Placerville to find gold just like any other gold rush town but because of the placer gold deposits many struck it rich there. The first miner’s court assembled on January 22, 1849 in Placerville. Placerville had a high crime rate and started miners with theses miner’s courts. These helped form a sense of justice in most mining camps. Placerville was a supply for all the cities around it during the gold rush and was also one of the third largest cities in the beginning of the gold rush. Placerville may not have had the biggest impact on all of California but it was still a present factor.
There are different accounts on how Placerville attained the name of Hangtown, but the most famous is an episode that occurred one January night in 1849. A gambler named Lopez hit it rich at a local saloon. After he retired for the evening, several robbers tried to overpower him. Lopez fought back like a tiger, and with the help of others, the robbers were captured and beaten like piñatas. Three of the robbers had been wanted for previous robberies, as well as for murder at a gold camp on the Stanislaus River. A thirty-minute trial was held for the robbers and after a unanimous “guilty” verdict, the crowd called out, “Hang 'em! Hang 'em!”
For many, the quaint town of Point Clear, Alabama represents the Old South rooted in tradition, charm, and grace. Halfway down the bay and nearly hidden among oaks adorned with Spanish moss, Point Clear was founded in the early 1800s. Today, the city continues to honor its role in the Civil War, perpetuates the memories of its residents, and evolves as a greater and better place.
To accommodate the needs of the ’49ers, gold mining towns had sprung up all over the region, complete with shops, saloons, brothels and other businesses seeking to make their own Gold Rush fortune.
The expansion to the western lands of the United States created a number of benefits for the economy and its citizens. With the expansion to these lands, Americans gained the added land area along with the resources that the land possessed. One of these valuable resources that attracted Americans to the West was gold. During the mid-1800s, gold was discovered in northeastern California. This inspired a movement of many Americans to leave their homes to settle in the West in the hope of discovering gold. This gold rush attracted primarily single men into the uncharted western lands.
As most folks do, when I think of the term “Gold Rush”, it conjures up images of the West! Images of cowboys and crusty old miners ruthlessly and savagely staking their claims. Immigrants coming by boat, folks on foot, horseback, and covered wagon form all over the US to rape and pillage the land that was newly acquired from Mexico through the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo… California. But let me tell you about a gold rush of another kind, in another place, even more significant. It was the actual first documented discovery of gold in the United States! Fifty years earlier…in North Carolina!
Santa Catalina Island, often known as Catalina Island, is located off the coast of Southern California, southwest of Los Angeles. Catalina Island forms part of the Channel Islands archipelago. Catalina is the only island, out of eight, that has been significantly developed. There are two major settlement location within the island - the city of Avalon and the unincorporated town of Two Harbors (“Visit Catalina Island,” 2014). Beyond the town boundaries the island is covered by wild life that it is owned and operated by the Catalina Island Conservancy ("The Official Catalina Island Website,” 2013).
The California gold rush brought many settlers to the west in search of fortune. The first person to discover gold in California was James Marshall, it was because of his finding if gold that thousands flocked to California. Although in the east many promises where being made about riches not everybody would strike golf. An example of this was Jean Nicholas Furlough who came to California from Belgium to become rich although he never did.
In historical terms the city of Oakland was named after the many Oak trees that inhabited the land when the city was established. Oakland was first founded in 1852 and is located on the East side of the Bay Area in Northern California.(Oakland History) Native Americans had previously lived in the area for over 5 thousand years before many arrived for the Gold Rush, and put down their roots. The famous author Jack London also spent many of his earlier years in Oakland, and his works have said to have been influenced by the city. My personal perception of Oakland is that it has always been the forgotten city in the Bay Area. Almost no one would notice that famous actors Clint Eastwood, and Tom Hanks spent many of their childhood days in the city. Basketball future hall of famers Gary Payton and Jason Kidd also spent their childhood days there. Baseball hall of famers Reggie Jackson and Ricky Henderson still own homes in the city.
My great great great great grandpa, Thomas Doyel was in charge of putting a group of men together to go to the Gold Rush. They had 15 groups who traveled with wagons and horses with cattle following.
“The California Gold Rush of 1849-1855 radically transformed California, the United States and the World” (Historical Impact of the California Gold Rush). The California Gold Rush all started when James Marshall found gold in the American River at Sutter's Mill in California while constructing a sawmill for John Sutter. John Sutter and James Marshall tried to keep the discovery a secret, but word got out and was spread throughout the nation. During 1849, people from all over the country made the trip to California to find gold. Lots of people were mining for gold in California and used various mining techniques. The Gold Rush had many lasting impacts on California. The gold rush had many long-lasting effects on California’s economy, environment,
The Gold Rush of 1848 was a very important event which helped shape the future of US history. When gold was discovered, California was not yet a state and did not possess a very sophisticated government or economy. As news of gold spread across the country and the world, fortune seekers flocked to California seeking a chance at a rich life. Americans traveled across the country, leaving their old lives behind to become miners. Indeed, an estimated 80,000 migrants arrived in California during the height of the gold rush. While some of these newcomers did indeed find gold, most found the work more difficult than anticipated. These travelers began settling down in various towns and villages across California as they
Many people today still take all the food and belongings they have for granted. the gold rush began when james w marshall found gold dust in the river by cutters mill. when he told his friend about it his friend spilled the beans. the world of gold in califormia led to thousands of people from all around the world to go to the golden state to join in the hunt for gold. many became poor and few got rich. all in all, the gold rush had a huge impact on america.
They would use “lumber to keep the mines open.” They would use the “creek beds for placer mining, and underground mines for hard rocks.” With the discovery of the gold in California, in 1849, it sparked the beginning of the California Gold Rush. Along with the discovery of gold, came people flocking to California to find their own
So, too, were the merchants. With some 80,000 people altogether crowded into California in the year 1849, the merchants already posted their inflated their prices and widened their profit margins greatly to make princely sums of money for ordinary items because of the ridiculously high and frequent demand for their goods and supplies. There were massive agricultural profits to be had in the “wild, wild west” that made the West that is today. The culture in California during the time of the Gold Rush did not simply consist of gambling saloons, cowboy bandits, and houses of ill repute. It also enjoyed the freedom from government regulation for a short period of time before California became the 31st state in the Union in 1851. Key beliefs upheld at that time included massive emphasis on individualism, political democracy, and economic mobility. Gambling houses, saloons, and other entertainment venues also saw the profit of the gold miners, who would frequent these places and pay with their day’s findings of gold flakes and end up poor and destitute. Many an ambitious miner fell into the traps of “sin” and lost their drive for the dream of a better life. Similarly, those who provided clothes, food and meat were in high demand. It has been rumored that men in the desert would be forced to pay hundreds of dollars for a drink of water, at the usual cost of their lives. Times for the idealists became brutal. However, the capitalist businessmen and women at this time were simultaneously making serious amounts of wealth as they amassed the forty-niner’s gold and created nice lives for
When you associate anything with New York City it is usually the extraordinary buildings that pierce the sky or the congested sidewalks with people desperate to shop in the famous stores in which celebrities dwell. Even with my short visit there I found myself lost within the Big Apple. The voices of the never-ending attractions call out and envelop you in their awe. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a young child on a shopping spree in a candy store. Although your feet swelter from the continuous walking, you find yourself pressing on with the yearning to discover the 'New York Experience'.
