A man by the name of Arthur Joseph Rooney founded the Pittsburgh Steelers on July 8, 1933. At this time, the Steelers were named the Pirates to go alongside the popular baseball team in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Steelers were a part of the NFL1, which at the time had only ten teams. At the age of eighty seven Art Rooney suffered from a stroke and passed away. Art Rooney was one of the founding fathers of the sports organizations that we know and love today.
When the Pittsburgh Steelers, then known as the Pirates, were founded in 1933 Mr. Rooney observed his team doing very poorly. Throughout the first seven seasons, the Pirates went through five different head coaches and racked up only twenty two wins. In 1938, the Pirates signed

Byron "Whizzer" White. White was an All-American from Colorado. White signed a contract worth $15,000, which at the time was very big money, this made White the first "big money" NFL player. White is one of the NFL's best alumni2 when he became a Supreme Court Justice3 after hanging up the pads. Pittsburgh4 is widely known throughout the world as the "Steel City". This led to Art Rooney changing the name of Pittsburgh's football organization from the Pirates to what we know and love today, the Steelers. The year of 1942 marked the first positive season (7-4) of the Steelers franchise history, and Head Coach Walt Kiesling and rooking half-back Bill Dudley are to thank for it. Sadly for the Steelers, the next year many players, including Bill Dudley, entered the war to help our nation. After so many of the NFL's players leaving for the war, Rooney and the Philadelphia Eagles combined in 1943 to make the "Steagles". The Steelers also combined with the Chicago Cardinals in 1944. Things started to get back on track for the Steelers in 1946 when Dudley came back from fighting and Rooney made Jock Sutherland the head coach of the franchise. Later that year Dudley won the NFL MVP award for the 1946 season. In 1947 the Pittsburgh Steelers, headed by Sutherland, went into the post season at 8-4 and lost to the Eagles in their first ever post season game. Coach Sutherland died the following spring. After Sutherland passed away suddenly, Rooney named a man by the name of John Michelosen as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Michelosen stayed as the head coach from 1948 to 1951. After the four seasons Michelosen had an "outstanding" record of 20-26-2. In 1952, under coach Joe Bach the Steelers abandoned the single wing formation5, becoming the last team to convert to the T-formation6. In 1954, coach Bach resigned, giving the team to another previous coach Walt Kiesling. In 1957, Buddy Parker was announced head coach and remained head throughout the next eight years. During the next eight years, Parker led the Steelers to five positive seasons7. Parker also had help from a now NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Bobby Layne through three of the five seasons. Including the 1962 season where the Steelers went 9-5 and a losing playoff game against Detroit. Parker ended his ten year run with the Steelers with a 51-48-6 record and third all-time in Steelers wins. On October 25, 1964, Ernie Stautner became the first player in Steelers franchise history to have his jersey retired8 (No. 70). Stautner, the now Hall of Famer, played defensive tackle. Brief head coaching stints by Mike Nixon in 1965 and Bill Austin from 1966-68 preceded the hiring of the 37-year-old Chuck Noll on January 27, 1969. Noll began to rebuild the Steelers through the draft, starting with the defense when he selected defensive tackle Joe Greene with his first choice in 1969. Today Greene is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Noll's first season did not go very well, leaving the Steelers at 1-13 but securing them a first overall draft pick in the 1970 draft. This pick also turned out to be a great one when Noll drafted a quarterback by the name of Terry Bradshaw who is now a Hall of Famer. Terry Bradshaw was followed by more amazing talent spotted by coach Chuck Noll. These talents include players such as cornerback Mel Blount in the same draft as Bradshaw, linebacker Jack Ham in 1971, and running back Franco Harris in 1972. When it was all said and done, coach Noll drafted a total of nine now a day Hall of Famers. In 1970, the Steelers mad the transition from the NFL Century Division to the AFC Central, thanks to the combination of the American Football League and the NFL. Pittsburgh changed into their new stadium, Three Rivers. The former Steeler homes were Forbes Field and Pitt Stadium. Thanks to the great drafting of coach Noll, in 1972 the Steelers won their first ever divisional title and ended with a positive record of 11-3. The Steelers took down the Oakland Raiders at the first playoff game at Three Rivers Stadium. Franco Harris made his famous reception9 in the last minutes of the game. The Steelers got their first playoff win, but suffered a loss to the Miami Dolphins the next week. The Steelers first division title came over a dry streak of over forty years and as great as that sounds, it is only a small bit of what is to come within the next decade. The Steelers started off the seventies strong with a wild card playoff berth following a 10-4 record in 1973. However, they were defeated by their first playoff win ever last year, the Oakland Raiders. The year of 1974 marked the first of the Steelers six in a row AFC Central titles. The Steelers had a strong run to the Super Bowl, beating Buffalo in the first round and Oakland in the divisional championship, where there they took on and defeated the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 16-6 in Super Bowl IX, their first of many. The Steelers defense paved the way for the win. The Pittsburgh Steelers went an astonishing 12-2, winning 11 straight games, to win their second out of their six consecutive divisional titles in 1975.
The Steelers made their way to their second ever Super Bowl win by beating Baltimore in the first round and Oakland in the divisional championship. In Super bowl X, the Steelers defeated the Dallas Cowboys to complete the back to back Super Bowl championships. The next year, 1976, the Steelers started off very poorly by starting a terrible 1-4 until winning nine wins in a row, five of which being shutouts, to rack up the third consecutive divisional title in a row. They beat Baltimore in the first round of the playoffs before falling to the Oakland Raiders in the second round. This was a great part affected by the loss of both running backs Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier due to injury. The following year, the Steelers had a regular season record of 9-6 until losing to Denver in the first round of the playoffs. The year of 1978 was a great year for the Steelers' franchise when they went a league best 14-4 and beat Denver and Houston on their way to their third Super Bowl win. The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Dallas Cowboys and won Super Bowl XIII to be the first team in NFL history to make it to three Super Bowl victories. 1979 proved to be another successful year for the Pittsburgh Steelers when they racked up their fourth Super Bowl championship. The Steelers defeated the LA Rams in Super Bowl XIV. This made them the only team in the NFL with four Super Bowl championships and the only team to win back to back Super Bowl championships two times. The Pittsburgh Steelers were named the "Team of the Decade" for the 1970's after having four Super Bowls and six consecutive AFC Central titles under their
belt. The Pittsburgh Steelers started off the 1980's slow, missing the playoffs in 1980 and 1981, even though they had positive records both years. In 1982, the Steelers 50th anniversary, the NFL was interrupted by a strike but the Steelers managed to make it to the playoffs but was defeated by the San Diego Chargers in the first round. This would turn out to be the last playoff game at Three Rivers Stadium for ten years. In 1983 Pittsburgh managed to win their eighth divisional title but were defeated in the post season by the Raiders. In 1984 the Steelers managed to rack up their ninth divisional title and made it to the AFC championship where they lost to Miami. In 1986 the Steelers started falling by going 7-9, their first negative record in 13 years. The following year, 1987, where they went 8-7 and failed to make the playoffs. Then came 1988, where the Steelers went a terrible 5-11, their worst record in 19 years. The next year, 1989, showed the heart of the Pittsburgh Steelers when they started off with devastating losses of 51-0 and 41-10. The team never gave up and battled back to finish with a 9-7 record and a AFC Wild Card10 spot. The 1989 team suffered a heartbreak overtime loss to Denver. The 1990 Pittsburgh Steelers team did not make the playoffs, followed by the 1991 team following in their footsteps. On December 26, 1991 coach Noll announced his retirement after coaching for thirty nine consecutive seasons. He stayed as Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for twenty three of those years. He has the fifth most wins in NFL coaching history and finished with a record of 209-156-1. He is the only coach to ever win four Super Bowls. Coach Noll is now in the NFL Hall of Fame. Bill Cowher, the NFL's youngest head coach at the time, was named the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cowher started strong, going 11-5 and racked up yet another divisional title. Cowher won the NFL Coach of the Year and the Steelers had six players included in the NFL Pro Bowl. Cowher got the Steelers their 10th divisional title, making them the first team since the merger to do this. After 10 long years, the Steelers were defeated in the post season by Buffalo at Three Rivers. For the first time since the 1983 and 1984 seasons, the Steelers made back to back playoff appearances by making the AFC Wild Card spot in 1993. They later took a loss to Kansas City in the Wild Card game. The Steelers racked up another divisional championship in 1994 until they were defeated by the Charger in the first AFC championship at home since 1979. Bill Cower became the youngest NFL coach ever to have a Super Bowl appearance under his belt in 1995. The Steelers marched to Super Bowl XXX before losing to the Cowboys. Cower reached fifty wins in 1996 becoming the eight fastest to reach the milestone. He ended the season at fifty seven wins, trailing only Noll in wins. The Steelers captured their fourth consecutive AFC Central title in 1997, while posting an 11-5 record. They were one play away from earning their sixth Super Bowl appearance and lost to Denver, 24-21, in the AFC Championship game. In 1998, the Steelers finished a disappointing 7-9, losing their last five regular-season games and missing the playoffs for the first time under Bill Cowher. It marked the first time that Cowher had been associated with a team with a losing record during his 14-year coaching career. The Steelers suffered their second consecutive losing season under Cowher in 1999, when their record fell to 6-10, including a six-game losing streak. The Steelers fourth-place finish in the AFC Central was the team's worst finish under Bill Cowher. The Steelers then in the 2000's opened up Heinz Field, racked up their sixth Super Bowl (the most in NFL history), and declared themselves as the greatest franchise in NFL history.
“The Green Bay Packers are a non-profit corporation held by the citizens of Green Bay to run it’s football team”,who I think are the best, arguably are the most storied franchise in the National Football League, were organized on Aug,11, 1919, in the dingy second-floor editorial rooms of the old Green Bay Press-Gazette building, located on Cherry Street in downtown Green Bay. Never imagining what might become of the semipro football team being formed that day, nobody documented who was there or how many were on hand. There had been no announcement of the meeting beforehand, and the Press-Gazette provided no details about it the day after.Whether a full complement of players attended or if it was simply a
It is the reason fans fill the stadiums or turn them into ghost towns. If you were to look up success in the NFL one would probably see a picture of the Patriots. Six trips to the Super Bowl, fourteen winning records, and making the playoffs fourteen out of fifteen times within a fifteen year period are all hallmarks of their success. Comparing that to the Cowboys’ one playoff win, zero Super Bowl appearances, and five winning records within that same time span really shows which team has enjoyed more
lose to the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs. In 1978 the NFL expanded to a 16 game season and the Rams go 12-4-0, they make it to the championships. and lost to the Dallas Cowboys by the score of 28-0. The Rams win their 7th. Division title in 1979 with a 9-7-0 record.
The Steelers overall have many strengths that should last throughout the entire franchise of the team. Even when having a short down year, the Steelers are never in rebuilding mode. When a team can go nearly forty-five years without many rebuilding seasons, it shows that the franchise as a whole from the owner, players, coaches, and fans is run the right
Many think Tom Brady is a great quarterback. He has great statistics and has won many Super Bowls.
Jim Thorpe was one of the first to change the game. He was an American Indian who was tremendously talented at football. He became the president of the league after he was done playing on a team. He named the league the NFL, which stands for National Football League. This name still stands today for the name of the league where the pros play.
players around the NFL. The number of athletes that protested would increase from a couple on each team to nearly all of them. With the only exception being, the Dallas Cowboys. Who as a team took a knee prior to the anthem, but would all stand during it. This was due to the owner Jerry Jones why has said that no player will sit or take a knee on his team or he would cut them, but more on that later. Then there was one other person that would not join his team in protest. That person was Pittsburgh Steelers player Alejandro Villanueva. Who is a former United States Army Ranger.
Do you like professional football? Have you ever wondered where teams originate from? Or what teams have been around the longest? There are great times noted in the past. One of those great teams in the San Francisco 49ers. They have made history and are known as one of the type franchises in the history of the NFL. The 49ers are considered a dynasty to the media and fans. The 49ers are respected greatly for their Super Bowl achievements.
Despite a dominant 40-10 win against the San Fransisco 49ers, it is not all good news for the Dallas Cowboys looking back on Sunday evening’s showing. The Dallas Cowboy’s lost All-Pro kicker, Dan Bailey, mid game, due to a groin strain in his kicking leg. It was announced this morning that Bailey could be out for several weeks while recovering.
NFL teams are practicing lightly so far this year, training camp is multiple weeks away, and the first preseason game isn't going to be played for months. The new defense has not been completely installed yet and neither has the new offense. We do not know whether the special teams unit will be as effective as it has been the past several seasons because Chip Kelly's practice schedule is no longer in place to provide extra reps and the overall depth chart isn't even being considered at this point because players are currently sporting shorts and t-shirts on the field.
Have you ever heard of one the most dominant players in florida gators history. Someone who took the mediocre florida Gators into a contender for the college championship every year he was there. His name is Tim Tebow and begins is his story. The book through my eyes a quarterback's journey is about how a young boy always struggling to play his favorite position on the field the quarterback, because he didn’t have the body shape for a QB but a body shape for a linebacker.

According to the web article “University of Alabama Football” by Steve Townsend, close friend of Mal Moore, the legendary athletic director of Alabama, The University of Alabama formed its first football team in 1892, winning 56-0 over a team with players picked from various Birmingham schools and designating themselves as Birmingham High School.
This essay is about the birth of the Super Bowl and how it changed American football forever. The Super Bowl changed football in a positive, permanent way. With the birth of the Super Bowl, I believe the sport started to become more and more popular because the winner of the Super Bowl would be the true champion instead of there being two champions (one in each of the two leagues). There was also much more money to be made with the Super Bowl because it would end up make the game more popular beyond belief which was another goal. I do not think that football would not have come as far as it has today without it. The first Super Bowl was held in Los Angeles, California on January 16, 1967. However, before this pro football was separated by two
