A Light in the Midst of Darkness
Bravery is simply finding faith in oneself, accepting risks and danger, and facing fear when no one else will.
Faith comes in all shapes in sizes, from humans faith in religion to the faith of a college student receiving an “A” on their exam. Faith in oneself emboldens bravery and heroic actions. Medal of Honor recipient William H. Pitsenbarger of the 38th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron during the Vietnam War is a wonderful example of a brave man. A man, who ultimately found faith in himself, accepted the risks and dangers of his career field and was willing to face his fears in order to save the lives of over a half-dozen American soldiers. Pitsenbarger was described by his best friend Henry J. O’Beirne as “an ordinary man who did extraordinary things.” (Henry J. O’Berine former Air Force pararescuman of the 38th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron)
Accepting risk and the danger that follows can be a daunting task for anyone to bear on their own. Like the soldiers on the battlefield in Vietnam, they understood the risks of enlisting in the military and would soon realize the dangers

associated with that risk. Pinned down and under heavy enemy fire will make even the bravest of men question their sanity, unfortunately that is exactly what the men of Company C, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry of the 1st Infantry Division had to face. Against overwhelming odds and a relentless, unforgiving enemy the men of Company C would show their bravery by finding faith in themselves and their fellow soldiers, accepting the risks and dangers of their situation, and facing some of their worst fears. Fred Navarro, who was seriously wounded, recalled the bravery he saw in Pitsenbarger on the battlefield “We were getting pounded so bad that I could only lie on the ground for cover. Pitsenbarger continued cutting pant legs, shirts, pulling off boots and generally taking care of the wounded. At the same time, he amazingly proceeded to return enemy fire whenever he could” (Fred Navarro former Company C, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry of the 1st Infantry Division) Pitsenbarger accepted the risk involved, was willing to endure the dangers of enemy fire and in an act of bravery and courage saved the lives of American soldiers. Facing fear can be the most difficult task behind defining the word bravery.
Fear itself can be an immobilizing force, wrecking lives, destroying cities and even conquering civilizations. Without fear there is no bravery, but with bravery all fear can be conquered. Pitsenbarger conquered that fear the moment he rappelled down the rope from his Kaman HH-43 Huskie helicopter and into the dense jungle of Vietnam. Daniel Kirby, a Company C rifleman recalled Pitsenbarger’s actions “I was stunned that somebody was coming down to put themselves in that situation. It’s hard to believe that someone would voluntarily come into that battle and stay with it. He had to be the bravest person I’ve ever known.” (Daniel Kirby former Company C rifleman) With this selfless action Pitsenbarger faced his fears and overcame them in a pure act of
bravery. Bravery truly is “an ordinary man or woman who does extraordinary things”. There are countless stories like Pitsenbargers of men and women in America’s armed forces throughout history who have shown examples of great courage and unwavering bravery. However each and every story begins with a man or woman finding their faith in themselves, accepting all the risks and dangers, and rising up to face their fears all in the name of bravery.
Bravery isn't having no fear; it is accepting and welcoming your fears and getting past
Courage: the ability to do something that frightens one, meaning the act of being courageous is not to be deterred by danger. This one word can categorize a person on a whole higher level. Stonewall Jackson exemplified tho word better than anyone else ever could have. For example, at the first battle of Bull Run, while several Confederate units were falling into disorder and panic, their general pointed to Jackson and his men who were withstanding the attack and said "There stands Jackson like a stone wall!" thus urging his men to gather their courage as well and regroup behind Jackson's position. In spring 1862, in Shenandoh Valley, Virginia, Stonewall created the Valley Campaign. In Jackson’s Valley Campaign, he marched
Bravery is like a very trusted friend, it will never let you down. That statement holds true in the great epic of "Beowulf." "Beowulf" is the story of a great hero who comes to the aid of a troubled king. Beowulf hears that king Hrothgar is having trouble and immediately comes to help with no questions asked. he defeats the monster, Grendel, with his bare hands. Beowulf then defeats Grendel's mother along with a dragon until he is fatally injured. Bravery is a very admirable characteristic that few people possess.
Whether engaging in European trench warfare or fighting through the jungles of Vietnam, a soldier must learn to cope with the incredible mental stress brought on by the ever-present threat of a grisly death. The physical stress introduced by poor nutrition, a harsh and hostile environment, and the cumulative physical effect of emotional trauma only serves to make a trying situation even more taxing. It is out of this violently stressful environment that the coping mechanisms that characterize wartime masculinity arise.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
Bravery is a heroic quality that everyone has and when put into action it can become deadly or even unstoppable. Martin Luther King pushed through the racism as if he had no fear of the consequences. Martin Luther King stood tall as Beowulf did when fighting Grendel for the Danes; people not his family but for those in need. They both fought having no fear of their death but the greatness they would achieve in the end. Beowulf and Martin Luther King were both men who fought for the people and not themselves. Martin Luther King was pushed to the edge when being jailed for protest, But through all he prevailed and overcame. Bravery
The definition of bravery in the Standard College Dictionary Canadian Edition is, "the quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or opposition with fearlessness, calmness, and firmness." Bravery is a quality that is shown by many of the characters in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The characters are brave in their effort to protect physical well-being, personal values, their reputation and sanity. In the novel the characters exhibit genuine bravery in order to guard the things important to them.
“There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known, or everyone you have ever loved, for the sake of something greater.”
Bravery is the quality of a person who displays courage and fearlessness in the face of danger. Such qualities show splendor and magnificence in a person. Fear and terror sometimes hinder the determination someone can show. Overcoming this fear is what portrays bravery. In Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry shows bravery by freely joining the Italian army, risking his life for some ambulance drivers and swimming to freedom, being shot at the whole way.
The virtue of fear and confidence is bravery. Just like magnanimity, bravery also has an excess and a deficiency. The vice of excess for bravery is cowardice meaning that the person is too fearful, and the vice of deficiency is rashness meaning that the person is not fearful enough. With regards to the virtue of bravery, a person should do things for the sake of what is noble.
The ability to show courage is very important to be a hero. Courage means the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous, and being able to carry on in spite of danger
Finding the courage to be brave is not always easy is explained and illustrated with examples of Salva being brave. “He was crying so hard he could hardly get his breath. He could not think, he could barely see. He had to slow down and for the first time on the long journey, he began to lag behind the group.” ( Park, 53) While Salva was walking through the Akobo Desert he got injured by stepping on a rock. Salva kept walking even when he could hardly breathe and he was falling behind, because he could have gotten lost and wouldn’t know where to go, and would have to travel alone. In addition, Salva shows

Bravery is the mental or moral strength to venture and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Fear is what one feels when fighting, knowing that he or she could die. For example, when Sir Mordred and King Arthur were to fight, Arthur was told that if he fought Mordred, Arthur would die. Regardless, Arthur fought Mordred. Though not stated in the text, one would assume that Arthur had fear of himself dying running through his brain, and that would explain how his adrenaline got pumped up enough to kill Mordred. Difficulty is going against someone who is more skilled. When the young Sir Gryfflette challenged King Pellinore to a joust to avenge a knight?s death, Gryfflette lost, but because he went up against a more experienced person, he was demonstrating an act of bravery. The danger of the two is that one can always die in matters such as those.
