Have you ever heard that pit bulls are nice, friendly dogs? Probably not. Pit Bulls haven’t always been the most friendly dogs. They may be cute and fuzzy, but what about their personality? Pit bulls have been around since the Civil War, when American’s immigrated them. Since then, pit bulls seemed friendly. But over the years, these pit bulls have become very dangerous. Pit bulls should not be kept as pets.
One reason why I think that is because pit bulls can attack people, and have attacked people. According to a newspaper article, Miami - Dade Votes to keep Pit Bulls Out, it says in paragraph two that an eight year old girl was just sitting outside her front porch and was suddenly attacked by their neighbor’s pit bull. Pit bulls can harm you. They might even kill you. We want people to be safe environment, don’t we?

Another reason why people should not keep pit bulls as pets is because they can be vicious.
As I said in my other paragraph, they could cause a serious injury or kill you. In the newspaper article, Ohio Overturns Pit Bull Bill, A man named Bruce Goodwin said, “I am not convinced that a ‘pit bull’ is a safe animal to have around. The ‘pit bull’ has the distinction or characteristic that, when they grab on, they don’t let go. You can say all you want about all the other breeds, but ‘pit bulls’ are the choice for drug dealers and other bad folk for a reason.“ Pit bulls are very dangerous to have around. They could easily harm you. Pit bulls are not what you need as pets. There are plenty of other breeds of dogs out there, and pit bulls should not be one of
them. Two years ago, I was playing next door with my friend. My friend’s sister was inside the house, and the door was open. A pit bull came running through the door and started chasing my friend’s sister. The pit bull turned out to be our neighbors, and thankfully, no one was hurt. Pit bulls can do this to you and your family. No one wants people hurt by the pit bulls, but if we keep them as pets, it could lead to something very drastic. In conclusion, I think that pit bulls should not be kept as pets. They can harm you, and they are vicious and will attack you. If we do not find ourselves careful around these dogs, we could find ourselves in the hospital or even Urgent Care. Pit bulls could attack our loved ones!
Would you rather have a plan old dog or a pitbull as a pet? Pitbulls should be allowed as pets. Pitbulls are a model for pride, working dogs, and guardians.
Pit bulls, like any other dog, grow into their temperament. The way the dog is raised rounds out their character and general temperament. According to the “American Temperament Test Society: Pit bulls pass temperament tests 84.1% of the time, which ranks them slightly better than golden retrievers (83.8%) and cocker spaniels (81.7%), and well above miniature schnauzers (78.6%),” (The Biting Truth). Myths have generated atrocious attitudes towards this breed for years. The nature of the dog to be a protector to children and the bulky build of pit bulls makes them a very easy breed to target. These opinions ...
What words come to mind when one hears the words “pit bull?” How about aggressive, violent, or dangerous? In many cases, this isn’t actually true. Because of the negative media attention for attacks on humans and other dogs that pit bull breeds receive, many Americans place a stigma on pit bulls, tagging them as dangerous and vicious. This stigma typically applies to all pit bulls, not just the ones that are actually dangerous. To remedy the issue of dangerous dogs attacking other beings, the legislative act known as breed-specific legislation is being debated throughout the United States. Gary J. Patronek, a veterinary doctor, defines breed-specific legislation as a law than “bans, restricts, or imposes conditions on ownership of specific breeds or dogs presumed to pose greater risk of biting people” (788). Breed-specific legislation is commonly debated in communities that have recently experienced a dog-bite related injury or fatality (Patronek, Slater, and Marder 788). However, this law would ban all dogs of the pit bull breed or any related dog based solely on their breed, rather than disposition. Therefore, breed-specific legislation should not be enacted throughout the United States because is biased against pit bulls and is ineffective in reducing dog-bite attacks by ignoring other aggressive dog breeds.
Pit bulls are Good Pets Don't judge a book by its cover. Over the years, pit bulls have gotten a bad reputation. It is true that there have been a lot of injuries, but have there been just as many injuries from other breeds of dogs. I think that if you raised them in a loving environment, trained them properly, and if the media stopped reporting injuries, this breed of dog would be more accepted by the public. Proving that pit bulls get the short end of the stick and can make great pets.
One reason Pit Bulls should not be banned is because they can be very helpful to humans. For example, pit bulls were once kept as hunters and guardians. Today, they are even being used as service dogs for people in need. There was also a pit bull named, Stubby, who saved his entire platoon from a poisonous gas attack. (“Pit Bulls Haven’t Always Had a Bad Rep”). Pit bulls are also great dogs for companionship and to improve your quality of life. As you can see, pit bulls can be useful in many ways.
A menace to society, lurking in the streets, just waiting for its next victim? This couldn’t be further from the truth for most pit bulls. These fantasised versions plague the breed, outlawing them in many cities, states, and even some countries entirely. These bans are called Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), and in over 700 American cities these laws are in effect. They are in place to decrease the number of attacks by dogs.
One reason people are so frightened of pitbulls is for their roles in street gangs. They are often used as what law enforcement has begun to deem, Are all pit bulls subjected to the life of gangs or forced into a fighting ring? No, but it is the dogs that are and have become violent because of their mistreatment that get in the media which leads to the public fearing all pit bulls.
There are a lot of facts and information about pit bulls that the public does not know. The media blows things way out of proportion with this breed of dog and doing simple research can shed some light. “There are three main types of ‘pit bulls,’ they are the Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and American Staffordshire Terriers” (Pit Bull Rescue Center). The Staffordshire bull terrier is originally from England. When it was brought over to the states it was bred with other terriers and the American Staffordshire came to be. Often times people classify dogs that look a certain way as pit bulls, when in fact they are an entirely different breed or a mix of some sort.
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. (Davis)
Even though pit bulls are the majority of dog attacks anybody hears about, they are loyal and caring dogs. All they want is the love and approval of their owners. They will do anything that they are told to do. Their strength, stamina, and speed fuel the passion they have for their owners. Pit bulls are not vicious by nature; they are good guard dogs fueled by the love for their family; and, they are definitely loyal friends. They have a lower temperament than many other well-known breeds; therefore, they are not vicious by nature at all. They are very strong guard dogs. Pit bulls are known to be a scary breed, so people stay away from them. They have an amazing amount of speed and stamina that they can use to chase predators away, too. Pit bulls are the best friends anyone could ask for. They are loyal and loving creatures that just want to please their family. They are good dogs to train to be around children. If the children are a part of the dog’s family, then the dog will protect the child at all costs. Pit bulls are a good breed to have as a family
It is the bad owners that give the pit bull a bad name. Contrary to that popular belief, dangerous animal behavior is the function of inherently dangerous dog owners, not inherently dangerous dogs. One fact that supports this is that pit bulls are the dogs most often shot during drug raids(TELLINGS v. Toledo). Besides the pit bulls that are owned by drug dealers for status symbols and protection, many pit bulls are owned by people that breed them for fighting. These poor dogs have a very slim chance of living a normal and happy life. This is not the fault of the dog, but the fault of the owners that should not have the dog, or should care for them better. The dogs that are forced to fight and are conditioned to defend themselves or die. When these dogs get loose, everything is a threat to them and they defend themselves in the name of survival. If golden retrievers were bred and raised with the sole purpose of fighting to the death, they would be just as dangerous as pit bulls. On the contrary, if all pit bulls were bred and treated as family dogs, they would have the same reputation as golden retrievers, if not better as the statistics found in the temperament test above
Pit bulls have been known as “the pet” for drug dealers, and other bad people. They have been known to be “the pet” for those people because of the fact that they attack people and other animals. Bruce Goodwin once said,” You can say all you want about these other breeds, but ‘pit bulls’ are the choice for drug dealers and other bad folks for a reason.” If you want to keep people safe, a ban on pit bulls is the best idea.
Do you think that pit bulls are not safe? Pit bulls are only perceived to be unsafe . If they are perceived to be mean then they cannot get a fare chance . If they don't get a fare chance then more of them will end up in the shelter. If people cannot have pit bulls then they cannot be taken out of the shelters so that they do not have a fair chance. Pit bulls are safe to have and not unsafe.
When a ban is in place any pit that resided in the area can be taken to a shelter. Not all shelters try to save them. Many find it easier to euthanize a dog instead of finding a new home. The United States has had many cities ban pit bulls, but there hasn’t been a ban over the whole country yet. However many countries such as France, Brazil, and Denmark have banned Pit Bulls due to increased dog bite incidents, when the statistics show that only 0.00005% of the incidents were from a Pit-bull type breed of dog. Therefore, on average every year 99. 99995% of pit bulls are not guilty of any misconduct that they are so commonly accused of. The majority of the bites were from house hold dogs such as poodles and Chihuahuas
As John Baker Brown jr. said “If any canine breed today can use some positive public relations, it's the pit bull, according to Troka, associate director of Emory's Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and adjunct assistant professor in the Graduate Institute for Liberal Arts.” Majority of the dog that have attacked have been trained to do so, but what's looked at is not the fact that theses dogs can be trained easily, what's looked at is the fact that these dog attack. In an interview with Ernest Hapenny when asked “Would you say the way a Pit Bulls acts depends on its owner?” he replied by saying “Yes. In my opinion and experience I believe Pit bulls are one of the most loyal dogs you could own. These dogs “aim to please” their owner and if the owner themselves have bad intentions then it will definitely affect and influence the dog.” Pit Bulls are innocent dogs that are being punished for following orders, orders given to them by the people who are supposed to be training them and keeping them safe. This breed of dog is extremely misunderstood, so much so that some of the states have banned the breed. Puppies are drowned because families and states “can’t afford” to have these “menacing” dogs running around, but the true problem is not in the dog it is in the
