A little town in New Orleans became national news when a disabled child learned her therapy dog Zeus, was going to be taken away because of breed-specific laws her local community decided to adopt. According to Dominique Mosbergen with the Huffington Post, Moreauville decided to adopt this ordinance because towns’ people were complaining about dogs running loose in local neighborhoods. Zeus was targeted simply because he is a pit bull. Not because he was running loose or acted out in any way. Unfortunately, this story among many is due to the media portraying some dog breeds as vicious in connection with reports of injuries inflicted upon humans. These attacks are often emotionally associated with dog fighting, gangs, and guard dogs, which have led to the unfounded belief that pit bulls bite more and are genetically vicious. Such beliefs often cause communities to become paranoid over pit bull ownership, and implement ineffective laws because they want their communities to be safer. While dog attacks are a serious problem, discriminatory breed laws against pit bulls should be banned because they create a false sense of security, and there is not enough evidence as to what constitutes them as a …show more content…

Sadly, such illegal activities have added to the media’s stereotypical portrayal that these dogs and dog like them are vicious in nature. While genes do contribute to the nature of a dog’s physical traits, it has not been proven that genes can determine that nature of a dog’s behavior.
