Banning pit bulls and pit bull mixes from living in urban and suburban areas will cut down the number of violent dog attacks in the United States. These dogs often have a violent nature and are involved in more dog attacks than any other breed. While owning them in some cities and states is illegal, they are still available to anyone to adopt. Outlawing these dogs in cities, but not in rural areas will help to lower the total number of attacks while still allowing the breed to continue its existence in the United States. They are very protective dogs and can easily kill a person or another animal. While this is a problem for many dogs, “Pit bulls were responsible for 81% of dog attacks in the 3-year period of 2006 to 2008 that occurred off owner property,” according to DogsBite.org. In 2014, 20 of 32 of the registered fatal dog attacks on the “Fatal Dog Attacks in the United States” Wikipedia page involved a pit bull or pit bull mix. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia conducted a five-year study published in 2009 based on the number of dog attack admittances at their hospital. A woman I work with breeds pit bulls and tells me all the time about how their dog loves her kids and would never hurt them, however if anyone acted out towards them, the dog would more than likely attack. Another situation that demonstrated the dangerous behaviour of these dogs was with my sister’s neighbor who owns a pit bull mix. The neighbor warned my sister to keep her chocolate lab inside when their dog was out because they were worried their dog would attack and kill my sister’s.
