The film "Pinocchio", released in 1940, revolves around the hardships of Italian- American immigrants. Disney’s account of Pinocchio’s story portrays charisma, attitudes, and cultural views of immigrants as they attempt to adapt within American culture. Numerous details have been displayed in the film and demonstrate the how the shift in culture may have been experienced.
Geppetto, the creator of Pinocchio, is not wealthy. Geppetto harbors in his abilities as a craftsman and woodcarver. Italian-American immigrants who were talented tradesmen, farmers, and businessmen were unable to immediately have professions and modest incomes. Given that Italians, who were chased out by their own government and were also the most desperate to leave, it comes as no surprise that a large number of them ended up in such low level work as mining and construction.

Monstro, a giant whale feared by all sea creatures, swallowed Geppetto. Monstro is a blue whale and is aggressive and seeks vengeance. Even as he embarks upon a routine feed, there is overemphasis of a conniving grimace displayed on the creature out of gratification. Monstro presumably experiences great pleasure and satisfaction in consuming those who are deemed feeble in comparison to him. This interpretation towards the Italian-American lineage is suggestive towards the tyrannous mindset of the American masses against immigrants in the early 1900’s, more specifically, Italian immigrants. In Subtractive Schooling: US-Mexican Youth and the Politics of Caring, Angela Valenzuela investigates immigrant and Mexican American experiences in education. Pietro DiDonato’s Christ in Concrete is a powerful narrative of the struggles and culture of New York’s Italian immigrant laborers in the early twentieth century. Jerre Mangione and Ben Morreale, in their historical work La Storia, state that "Never before or since has the aggravation of the Italian immigrant been more bluntly expressed by a novelist" (368). A central component of this "aggravation", both for DiDonato as an author and for his protagonist Paul, is the struggle to reconcile traditional religious beliefs and customs with the failure of that very same faith to provide any tangible improvement in the immigrants’ lives. Through Paul’s experience, we observe the Catholic institutions lose influence and effectiveness as Capitalist ones, manifest in Job, take their place. While doing this, DiDonato also illustrates essential aspects of Italian (specifically southern) Catholicism and the pressures placed upon it by the American environment.

Many scholars have written about the particularly intimate connection between food and family prevalent in Italian-American culture. Herbert Gans interprets this to be a legacy of the traditional Southern Italian peasant culture that the immigrant generation successfully passed down to the younger generations in America. Thus, the connection is implied to be a “transplanted” cultural trait. However, when viewed in light of the social changes in America, this bond was inevitably affected by the Italians’ experiences in America. Italian-American food culture was a tradition shaped by changes outside and inside the family. An examination of the Italian-American family of the interwar years (c.1919-1940) demonstrates that the critical role food came to play in the family life of Italian-Americans was very much the product of inter-generational negotiation. The second generation , largely affected by public discourse, originally viewed “Italian” food as a marker of social inferiority. Therefore, food became a major source of family conflict between generations. But, through inter-generational negotiation, food was ultimately to become a fundamental unifying force of the Italian-American family. Today, in light of the rise of inter-ethnic marriage rates between Italians and Italian-Americans in America, a new form of negotiation centering on food is taking place within the Italian-American family—‘inter-spousal’ negotiation.

Cultural diversity is about people who identify with a particular group based on where they grew up, their ethnicity, the language they speak, the values they hold and their beliefs. This doesn’t mean everyone will be the same or think the same. The differences of the Italian culture compared to European American culture is hard to see. Italy is filled more with culturally diverse people and respects more of the ethnic groups of the world. The Italian culture show this in their celebrations, food, music, and traditions. Italians live at a much slower pace, than American’s and they have a desire to enjoy life instead of rushing through it as many American lifestyles exhibit (Zimmermann, K. (2015). The extended family is very important in Italy, whereas in the United States, the focus tends to be on the nuclear family, which includes mom, dad, and children (Zimmermann, 2015).
