Adolescence. The instinctive phenomenon that delivers many suspicions and guilty pleasures that haunt the young mind of adolescent until the coming of age. However, the absence of adolescence delivers the vacancy of knowledgeable wings that fly up to moral intelligence. It epitomizes the meager amount of light that provides sight to the step directly in front of one’s self, rather than light radiating upon the rest of the staircase; the unknown world of adulthood. Carlo Collodi, author of The Adventures of Pinocchio, delivers the perfect collaboration of this ethical message on adolescence and an accurate propinquity to the lives of children. Pinocchio, the wooden puppet and nose-growing misfit, becomes easily astray from his morals and encounters many disastrous events. Geppetto, hopeless father of Pinocchio, makes many sacrifices for Pinocchio, but Pinocchio displays the natural attribute of an adolescent which is self-centeredness. This particular behavior of the adolescent Pinocchio, stimulates him into pleasurable temptation and carefree fun. Colloid’s characterization, epic symbolism, metaphysical aspects, and an immense deal of archetypes all introduce the portrayal of proto-adulthood, structured education versus individualism, and humanity growing out of foolishness. Collodi succeeds in pointing out that disobedience and pleasure-seeking behavior lead to evil and unhappiness. Thereon the natural attribute of adolescence, narcissism, must be outgrown to avoid the declivity to corruptive integrity. Without a doubt, the symbolism in Pinocchio’s journeys features many morals such as the dilemma of decision making and the destructiveness of self-served behavior.
Every single person on earth has gone through the stage of middle childhood in their lives; it is inevitable. This stage is an important time in an individual’s life as it provides them the opportunity to experience new challenges and to make new friends and relationships. Middle childhood is a time of slow yet steady growth of a person in the aspects of physical, mental, and emotional development. In the movie The Sandlot, the young boys show visible signs of school-age development which include the concept of self-esteem, showing interests in the opposite sex, and overcoming challenges. While there are many other things that imply development in school-age children, these three topics are the most prominent in the film.
Are adults overprotective of their children? To what point do we protect children? Where should the line be drawn? Along with those questions is how easily children can be influenced by these same adults. Two poets, Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins, express the ideas of how easily children can be manipulated and how sometimes adults think they are protecting their innocent children, when in reality they are not. Wilbur and Collins express these ideas in their poems through numerous literary devices. The literary devices used by Wilbur and Collins expose different meanings and two extremely different end results. Among the various literary devices used, Wilbur uses imagery, a simple rhyme scheme and meter, juxtaposition of the rational and irrational, and a humorous tone to represent the narrator’s attempt to “domesticate” irrational fears. Conversely Collins uses symbols, historical interpretations, imagery, diction and other literary devices to depict the history teacher’s effort to shield his students from reality. In the poems, “A Barred Owl,” by Richard Wilbur, and “The History Teacher,” by Billy Collins, both poets convey how adults protect and calm children from their biggest, darkest fears and curiosities.

In “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, Antonio encounters many obstacles that chip away at his innocence which forces him to question God’s authority and in justice in the world, such as the death of Lupito, Narciso, and Florence. Antonio is forced to endure difficult experiences too early in life, causing a premature loss of innocence.

Initially, Rios illustrates a young boy perplexed by a new-found maturity. As the maturation from childhood to adolescence begins, he is facing unfamiliar feelings about the opposite sex. An example of this is apparent as Rios explains that the boy cannot talk to girls anymore; at least “not the same way we used to” (Rios 453). Since his emotions have new depth and maturity, the young boy realizes the nature of his friendships has changed. Innocence is further lost as the girls who are former friends, “weren’t the same girls we used to know” (453). The boy has matured from his casual, youthful interactions, and is now seeing the girls in a new light. Another example of his maturity manifests sexually as he reflects about the girls, “and all the things we wanted to do with them” (454). Although he is unsure how to act upon his thoughts, the innocence is none the less tainted by his desires for mature relations with the young girls. The maturity and sexual maturity bring forth a storm of emotions that prove to be both exhilarating and confusing for the young boy.

Actually, two things seemed to have happened: first, the idea of childhood as a separate developmental stage began to arise; second, the idea of who was deserving of childhood also began to broaden. The pattern was similar in Europe and America, with some minor variations which resulted from geography, religion, etc., but the differences are inconsequential. Throughout Baby’s life she has experienced many cases where she has lost her innocence. Baby is young enough to bring her dolls around in a vinyl suitcase, yet old enough to experience more than she should about the world’s hardships. Baby and Jules had a lot of misfortunes in their life, and Baby’s vulnerability contributes to her misfortune, in being unable to differentiate between right and wrong, due to her desire to be loved; which Jules always failed to show her. There are many reasons why young adults feel the need to grow up fast in the adulthood world but in the end it’s not worth it. The childhood stage is overlooked and that’s the most important stage of life that young adults should cherish, because you only live through it once.

The motif of decay is seen in some symbolism too. The apple tree in the wild garden is symbolic to the tree of knowledge. However, the tree in the story is wild, meaning that knowledge is limited in the neighborhood. For example, when the previous owner, the priest, of the boy’s house had died, he had given all his money to charity and left his sister with nothing but old and used furniture.
According to the article “Rather than confirming the home as a haven from the heartless world, this study has revealed the heartlessness of the system in which mothers and nannies are caught,” the researcher wants people to know, instead of that the child becoming a well respectful adult in society, there is a possibility that the child will experience some trouble in becoming that person in his/her later life, because of the constant conflict between mothers and nannies; puppeteer is the main reason for these conflict.

In the play, Katherine is the oldest of the two daughters of Baptista. Baptista wants to marry off his daughters, even offering money, but he wants Katherine to be married before Bianca (his youngest daughter). There are plenty of acceptable suitors for Bianca, but Katherine only has one, Petruchio.
