The character piggy is a short and overweight boy. He would avoid confrontation any way he could. He is like that ten-year-old when his brother hits him and he cries to mom or dad. Although, he tries very hard to keep peace, he doesn’t have any social skills. His glasses are a very important part of the book because it helps start fires to survive. Out of all the boys on the island, he is the most intelligent. He also quotes his aunt a lot in the book, so he provides a female voice. Piggy’s personality traits are loyal and intelligent. But in chapter one piggy is very cowardly in the presence of someone in charge. A quote that represents cowardly is pg. 7. “once more that evening ralph had to adjust his values. Piggy could think. He could
go step by step inside that fat head of his, only piggy was no chief. But piggy, for all his ludicrous body, had brains “. Piggy changed throughout the book by becoming more confident for example when he wants to confront jack. Piggy, although at the beginning proved to not believe in the beast, in chapter 8 he starts to worry and fear the beast. Piggy also remains a target for jack this is because jack wants to hunt pigs, so it is only natural that piggy irritates jack. Piggy remains intelligent and represents social order right until he died, where the death of piggy symbolizes the breakdown and failure of the righteous society. Piggy responds to Simons death very incompetently. Piggy was in denial when Simon died, piggy asked “ what’s grownups going to think?” as if he is not so much mourning the boys’ death, but he is mourning the loss of values, ethics, and discipline that caused the deaths.
"His [Piggy] head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Piggy’s arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pig’s after it has been killed. Then the sea breathed again in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pink over the rock; and when it went, sucking back again, the body of Piggy was gone."
In the beginning of Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Piggy is seen as a weak and cowardly character, allowing the boys to walk over him. Throughout the book, he becomes more confident. For example, one instance where Piggy is seen as insecure is at the first meeting on the island. Piggy tells Ralph, another fellow survivor, that he doesn’t want anybody to call him Piggy. Later, after using a conch to summon the boys to the area, Ralph reveals Piggy’s name. Instead of insisting that Piggy is not what he wanted to be called, the book states that “he went very pink, bowed his head, and cleaned his glasses again” (Golding 21). This change is negative because Piggy is them to call him by this name he didn’t want.

Piggy's literal function in this novel is to be the intellectual and logical thinker to counteract the emotional thinking of the other boys. From the beginning, Piggy viewed everything logically. He quickly came to the realization that the boys may be on the island for a long time, when he told Ralph "Nobody don't know we're here. Your dad don't know, nobody don't know" (9), contrary to Ralph's assumption that his father, who happened to be a naval officer, would simply come and rescue them. While Ralph became the natural leader based on his charisma, "what intelligence had been shown was traceable to Piggy" (18/19). However, it is unfortunate that this intelligence eventually led Piggy to his demise. Piggy's direct way of analyzing a situation and voicing his opinion tended to make him quite un...
Piggy was a moral person and an uncorrupted person for his time on the island. he was moral because he believed in guidelines and weighed each decision he made with what the rest of society would say. He was moral because of this and never would he stray from what was moral or good in society so he would be mostly correct. Piggy had very strong ideas. when everyone else was starting out on the island, the rest of the worlds rules were with them. everyone slowly was drawn away from
Piggy is mentally resilient; he has the ability to think things through with the clear mind even during times of crisis. He is the true voice of reason. “‘I got the conch! Just you listen! The first thing we ought to have made was the shelters down there by the beach…But the first time Ralph says ‘fire’ you goes howling and screaming up this mountain. Like a pack of kids!’” (Golding 45). Piggy has the capability to let his voice of reason run unbridled because he tends to think before he leaps. Because of this, he is able to vocalize his morals proudly and never stray from his own beliefs.
Piggy’s leadership in the novel is portrayed as knowledgeable but lacks confidence from time to time. Piggy is shown to be a potential leader because of his wisdom. He portrays knowledge from time to time, for example, “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-” (12). This exhibits his knowledge of the art of survival. Even though in the novel, Piggy is shown as the weak link, his wisdom out powers his flaws. Although Piggy has lots of wisdom which makes him a potential leader, he lacks confidence. “Piggy opened his mouth to speak, caught Jack’s eye and shut it again.” (42) This proves that Piggy lacks confidence because he is afraid to express his thoughts. He would rather not contribute to a conversation than be laughed at his ideas. However Piggy does see the importance of having priorities. Specifically, when he says, “How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper.” (45) The quote proves that Piggy prioritizes the needs of his pee...
Being the only boy that wasn't violent shows how diverse Piggy was from the other boys on the island. "I got the conch I tell you" Piggy screamed in attempt to gain the boys' lost attention, "I tell you I got the conch." Good finally prevailed and Piggy gained the boys' attention. Never once did Piggy resort to violence, even when his glasses were stolen, he proved he was above violence. Unlike Jack, Piggy never killed. Piggy never hunted or killed a pig, let alone hurt another human being, he used his mind not his size to get attention. Being the biggest boy on the island, he had the upper hand in any fight that would have gone his way. Piggy talked out his conflict; in his opinion violence was not an option. "I just take the conch to say this. I can't see no more and I got to get my glasses back. Awful things have been done on this island. I voted for you (Ralph) for chief. He is the only one who ever got things done.
Right away in the novel, when the main character Ralph and Piggy have all the boys congregate for the first time, Piggy is thought little of. He had glasses, was fat, had a weird accent, and had asthma. Piggy is looked down upon by even little boys just because he lacks physical attractiveness. On top of this, the boys call him by his old school name, Piggy, which seems like some innocent joking at first, but once pigs on the island start being killed, it brings Piggy down to the level of pigs. When he is crushed

Piggy's specs are the boys' only way to starting a fire; they were a symbol of intelligence, until they went savage and lost their humanity. William Golding writes, "Jack pointed suddenly. 'His specs-use them as burning glasses!' Piggy was surrounded before he could back away," (Golding 40). Piggy is known to be the smartest boy of all the boys on the island, but Jack was the one who surprisingly pointed out that Piggy's glasses would be able to ignite a fire. At this point, the boys are still civilized and they are still trying to use the only knowledge they contain to survive. Glasses are usually a symbol of intelligence, even in today's society. Where as if a person wears glasses, then they are most likely to be labeled as "smart". Piggy's
Piggy is the next victim, when more innocence is being lost. This point the boys have separated into two groups. Most of the littluns are with Jack, who is one of the oldest and in charge of the Hunters. SamnErik, Piggy, and Ralph are the only ones that make up the other group. Jack and Ralph have a strong hatred towards each other. Power has gotten in the middle of them multiple times. Ralph wants everyone to help each other and act civilized. Jack on the other hand is developing a strong and obsessive passion for hunting. His only priority is hunting and that is coming between Ralph and his dying desire to be rescued. Ralph and Jack have split up and both groups are figuring out how to survive without each others differents skills. Fire is one of the most important resources because it offers a place to cook food and a way to be rescued with the smoke.
In Golding’s book, Lord of the Flies, Piggy learns to stand up for himself and have more self-confidence which is a positive change. Piggy is shy and weary of his actions in the beginning but as the story progresses the troubles and responsibilities of being stranded on the island causes his self-confidence and self-esteem to grow.
What makes piggy different from the others on the island ? Most of them tease him because of his glasses and he is over weight . This novel was written during the Coldwar by William Golding but it was based on World War 2. Piggys real name was never revealed but they called him piggy because of his weight . He also has poor eyesight , his intelligence is greater than all the other boys . Piggy represents a rational world because he always quotes his aunt , and because he provides the only female voice . Piggy believes that no one will save them , accepts the fact that no one will listen to him , and engages in science and positively affects the novel.
